New Trailer for FFXVI is up

There's going to be a lot of whining about it being so action based and with no permanent party.
But this looks really promising IMO.
I already made peace with the fact SE will no longer makes turn based for mainline FF, thats fine SE still makes other games that are turn based combat but If mainline FF going towards action combat then I want proper one.

And so far FFXVI's combat is looking good.

Yeah so between this, the RE, and SH streams, Sony definitely had a big showcase event planned that they canceled. Dropping shit like this out of nowhere or in smaller streams is going to get a fraction of the impressions and marketing impact a big event would. Really stupid on everyone's part, including Sony who evidently doesn't care about marketing the PS5 "ecosystem/platform" as a whole.

It's a mix. To me it's medieval but that's really about it. I suppose VI has some similarities.

To me it looks like it's aiming for something similar to FFXII, or Vagrant Story with that mix of political intrigue and maturity that isn't really a hallmark of the series prior to XII.
Well, Final Fantasy: Tactics.

People accepted a setting like Ivalice for FF easily back in the 90's. No idea why its so hard now.

I find it very impressive.
It looks like it's made with Luminous Engine, but many sources can't confirm this. In any case it's way better than Forspoken.
The only thing I don't like is the chara design, it looks similar to FF XIV but I'm not convinced. Maybe because the face capture is bad as usual.

Its NOT Luminous Engine.
Its an evolution of the FFXIV engine.

Theres a couple interviews in Japanese where this is all but confirmed.
Ill have to dig them up.

Not the hugest fan of the visuals, hair looks terrible. But everything else looks like a complete fun blast. Damn dude, 2023 is fucking incredible for RPG fans - Diablo IV, FF 16, Starfield, Baldur Gate's and whatever else is unannounced. Fuck me lol

Plus probably elden ring expansions

We need a vote thread for RPG GOTY 2023

Lighting looks weird. High quality models but the light feels flat and plasticy. Everything in FF7R looks so integrated but here things doesn't quite come together.

I'm also homping we get a 60fps performance mode, the 30fps trailer with the high quality models and amount of onscreen detail doesn't bode well for the consoles at least. Question is how long we have to wait for a proper PC release then. Will I be able to wait.

I'm not so enthusiastic.

For one, I'm in the camp that feels "classic" Final Fantasy means having some strategic turn-based elements more than it means anything else.

But besides that pipe dream, I don't like the Game of Thrones vibe here. It feels (at least in this one trailer) too much like a battle of kingdoms and thrones, rather than something that grows out of a small set of characters who only stumble into the larger story, which is more how I prefer these games. Also I miss the magical feeling. Some may say this is like FFIX in its medievalism but that game was fantastically colorful, playful, and magical right from the start.

Think people are ready for a change outside of the angst filled teens dramas FF has become.

This has more of a modern, mature, and 'grounded' feel to it, which is whats hot right now, like everyones saying very house of dragons. If people don't want that Rebirth comes out like 6 months later, and if they don't want that you got kingdom hearts 4 a year from that, maybe.

If people are still waiting on square enix to put out a AAAA turn based rpg, they might as well just give up. Its never gonna happen. Maybe Tabata's new RPG will be, or Microsoft can recruit mistwalker to make one again

I guess we agree on what it is (somewhat GoT-ified) but differ on whether that's a good thing.

For me, GoT is the exact polar opposite of Final Fantasy. They might both go under the category of "fantasy" works but they are completely irreconcilable kinds of fantasy. Even the slightest bit of GoT-style "mature" elements (I differ strongly on categorizing these recent tv shows as legitimately mature or intelligent, but that's another topic) is pure cancer to FF.

FF6 is one of my favorite games and it was very much a mature story with older cast and outside of the magi-tek they are pretty similar in premise with Eikons taking the place of Espers

Looks fun. At least it's very different from XIII and XV - games I couldnt play to the end.

I hope the story of these chosen folks turning into summons is a good story. If it's cringe it might ruin the story for me.

It's only missing the good-ol "young boy growing up in a small town" vibe.

From what I read you start out young, the game has 3 time periods

You can just refer to the Ivalice games really:

Like FFXII starting with the main charachters brother being killed in a political sheme

FF: Tactics, like everything. But just choosing that ending scene.

Vagrant's Story's intro.

I know people like to describe GOT at every opportunity, but fantasy settings focusing on intrigue and so on existed before 2010.

Is it me or do the graphics look better from past trailers? Pretty hyped for this one, only thing i dont like is the UI, i dont think it matches the style of the game.

That was actually my initial take from the earlier trailers.
I was thinking theres too much shit going on at once.
Surprisingly the HUD and all made it easier for me to actually see and understand whats going on.
Maybe its just the editing of the earlier trailers that made it look super chaotic, this trailer I actually could tell what the main character was doing, it wasnt just particle effects everywhere.

I watched the JP trailer.
Looks like the game is synced to English voices so English was the base language and JP is the dub.
It irks me so much cuz it seems like they didnt even try framing the dialogue within the animations, if they did I would probably play in Japanese, but at this rate English it is.

See for yourself:

The worst of two worlds then. What were they thinking making English the game's main VA being that mediocre...

I love VI but this doesn't feel like that at all to me. That game started with the otherwordly view of these mech machines and a mysterious girl under their control, a hint of old magic returning, then you had the overall steampunk feel to the technology everywhere. "Medieval war and battling thrones" wasn't the feeling I got from it at all.

Never been a fan of the Tactics spin-off to be honest (the GBA version though is fantastic, infinitely better than the console game, completely different tone too), and definitely not a big fan of XII.

Wow, no woke/joke characters.
This actually looks legitimately good.
Yeah, was fairly confident big budget FF games will remain free of such degrading stuff, considering how much control and influence the creatives at S-E have over the series vs the boardroom. Big difference between many AAA Japanese games vs Western.

The ideas in FF are conjoured up by the artists and not the execs. Doesn't mean the ideas are always good, but it's definitely preferable - look at Rings of Power.

Perfect! Looking forward to a quiet, humble village life opening.

Moments away from the main bad guys is important for JRPGs. It's exhausting if it's cat and mouse between good and bad guys all game long.

On my last gig came a cool programmer. He works years on Sony and then square .
I ask him why u quit square and work "here" now ? He told me he was doing the same game for 10 years and was sure the game won't be released, so he just change companies . Well….

So much of the presentation takes me back to FF12, how this game is more like an off-shoot in a universe of 14 (we know that it isn't of course, but it's largely influenced by the same team) whereas 12 was in Ivalice. The art direction lead by Minigawa set in medieval ages for the most part - it's really interesting as an entry. It doesn't feel so far from home yet it's doing its own thing as 12 did in its universe.

I can already tell I'll love this game.

I'm not a graphics whore when it comes to in-game visuals but the game is quite unimpressive in this department, so… this is another opportunity for me to be #TeamCGCutscenes. Where is the CG cutscene footage UGH. AND THERE BETTER BE MULTIPLE. Idc if I've already said that numerous times on this site

Looks ok for a non-Final-Fantasy title. I don't get why SE, after FFX, suddenly turned their mainline FF games into non-JRPGs. They could've easily created all these character action games in parallel to their mainline Final Fantasy games. Maybe it was a desperation move? Bad management?
Why call it even FF16? "Yet another Character Action game 16" would have been a way better name.

FFT sprites come off very differently. But you have a point.

It's a whole other visual world, though... a completely different art style, that's why it works so damn well.

I don't know what happened with FF world design, whether it has to do with improving tech and the move toward more "photo-real" imagery/graphics, or what... but this world just looks uninteresting. Detail is impressive, but I'd prefer a greater sense of variety in terms of what the world looks like... locations look quite same-y, and uninspired for me, at least for what I want in an FF.

I dunno. Guess I just miss the old games. None of them post-12 have managed to hold my attention, at all.

I wish turn-based fanatics could realize how absolutely silly they sound saying stuff like this. And also this post is confusing to me. You could pose some (bad) arguments for XII and XV but XIII blatantly has an ATB battle system with no movement in combat just like older FF titles. But XII and XV are absolutely JRPG's too.

Not watching. Don't wanna spoil myself. I already know I'm buying the game. Does it give a more specific release date?

No, but they do state Summer 2023 again, so sounds like 2023 is pretty spot on, if not might get pushed back to fall or something.

James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford agreed, but I feel Square has always had a stable of amazing artist, even in the games I hate, the art was fine lol

This shit is about to be epic, look closely at the 2:03 mark in the trailer. The Odin dominant Barnabas dead ass used Zantetsuken to part the ocean so he could walk on the floor.

the narrator with the book at beginning to end remind me of Edmont Fortemps from FFXIV: Heavensward. same writer here though.

RIP Stephen Critchlow.

Looks good, day 1.
2023 is going to be absolutely amazing for me. Starfield, Forza Motorsport 8, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16.
I just hope the nukes won't fall before 2024.
