Impressive.

I still do not understand why so many people seem to hate bloom lighting with such a passion...

Bloom lightning is only bad when used in excess, it looks fine here IMHO. I am still surprised about how the first complain about this awesome pic did not came from GAF's normal mapping hate club.

I don't hate it when used properly. This looks like shit.

It's as overused and played out as cel-shading, and is usually used as a cheap and distracting way to hide modelling flaws.

The picture here is fine though, although someone should tell the devs that fabric usually ain't that coarse

I like excessive bloom, since weird and artificial as it is, it's much more like the types of contrast and sunlight you encounter in real life. Think about how painful it is to look straight at the sky, even on a slightly overcast day. It's the same type of thinking that makes me play no Hud/cockpit in driving or flying games - it better recreates peripheral vision and real-life visual awareness.

I am ready for the next gen!!!!!! This is the worst time, being months before all the unveiling of new hardware and technology. The wait is agonizing!

As someone has just said it looks like an action figure :D
Very impressive technically speaking.
I think this techonlogy+ artistically skilled developers ( aka japanese developers) will allow next generation games to have life-like graphics (well...something like that :D )

Looks good, but I want to see 5-10 of these guys, some bots and some human-controlled, running around a detailed terrain with weapons fire, visual effects, sound, etc...

Bringing me one step closer to my dream of a UT mod where you control a giant hand that picks up models and bangs them against other models, knocking them over, all while making "BEW BEW BEW PKKKKKKKKK E-E-E-E-E-E" sounds.

Version 1.1 of the mod will contain the Lincoln Log Launcher.

I don't think it should be compared with cel-shading, though. Moving towards a cel-shaded design requires an entire shift in the type of art you are generating. This is not the case with bloom lighting.

While not entirely realistic, I do enjoy the "dream-like" appearance that heavy bloom lighting brings to the table as well as the more subtle uses.

The lighting presented in the pic above is certainly more realistic looking than it would be had they completely skipped out on the effect.

There's nothing realistic about this effect. It looks like he's glowing.

eh, jap developers aren't the only ones with skills. you really believe that?

Very OMFG-like impressive but it's just one model on a black background. Show me a 64-player Assault screen with this kind of graphics.

Na-ah. Won't do.

I bet thats running on Xenon! ;)

I wonder what game it is, Unreal Tournament 2005 or a new franchise starting Unreal series characters like Malcom?

Looking at all of these next gen shots just reinforces to me how much my TV sucks!

It will be an insult to these systems to NOT have a 1080p HDTV next gen.

The rumor says that these shots are from the new franchise game that should be announced real soon now. Nothing more than a rumor though.

Well... a 720p capable set should be sufficient for Xbox 2.

It's not a render. You can see small jaggies.
It's still a render.

The char model has been shown before, It's just now they are showing him holding the new render of the flak cannon. I hope they unveil more of this title very soon, there was some video footage showing some of the larger creatures in an outdoor enviroment that was pretty expansive. The video quality was a little on the low end though. Does anybody else remember or am I just imagining things.

It's still a render.
how is it a render?

Did they click the 'render' button in maya? No
Did they click the 'render' button in XSI? No
Did they take a screenshot while running the game engine with that model being displayed in realtime? YES

Not a render. Directly from the game engine.

It's not that superb like some of the guys here try to make you think. It's not an ingame or fmv sequance shot and thereby complety irrelevant. There are way better renders released, even a few years ago there were better renders available.

the way you are trying to describe this is that it isn't real-time. That they are somehow tricking everyone that Pixar did it at the renderfarm.

No. I merely corrected someone who mistakenly believed it isn't a render because he could see jaggies.

by your description everything displayed on a monitor is a render. all pieces of art are a 'rendering'.
just happens that people make the association in terms of computer art that render = not real time. so watch your words.

No.

Why? It's not my problem that people don't know the meaning of a word.

Yes.

Go look it up. For someone who's arguing definitions, you're awfully ignorant. I can render an image in pencils, or watercolors, or pixels, which would make the result a rendering.

Since you apparently don't know the meaning of the word yourself, I'd suggest you take Element's advice. If you insist on using the term that way even after being reminded of how it's commonly understood here, it'll be clear that you're stealth-trolling. :p
