Interesting description of Kylo's lightsaber from Season of the Force at Disneyland.

I really hope Kylo Ren is the main villain in all three or at least the first two and they don't pull a Darth Maul with him, make him the scary mother fucker that the PT didn't have.

This just looks menacing, some horror movie type shit. Driver being a fairly tall dude who they could make look bigger can help too.

I mean, I'm not really complaining about the lens flare.

As far as I can tell, it's still more subtlely done than in Star Trek 09/ID

But yeah, it's JJ so lol

Most people who "lol" over JJ Abrams and his lensflares probably never noticed a single lensflare until some smartass pointed out to them what they are, and even now don't notice them anywhere else because someone hasn't told them to look for them first.

You're not wrong. Wouldn't know it's a thing otherwise.

I mean, the lens flares we are seeing in this footage look like any other movie shot anamorphic. That's just an artifact that happens due to the lenses. Look at Die Hard:

In Star Trek he was actively adding lens flares on purpose as part of his aesthetic for those films, literally shining flash lights into the lens just off camera. This Star Wars footage is like, hey a light is bouncing off Phasma's armor for a split second and you get a quick streak, because that's how physics works.

I might point out that literally the very first shot there ever was of a Star Wars movie has lens flare coming off the engines of a spaceship, but I don't want to make people too uncomfortable.

He is signed on for all 3 films.

That scene isn't just two people talking though, it's two people talking in a busy port on a shuttle that is taking off. The flares suggest there is shit going on off camera, other ships flying by, causing light to hit the camera and create the lens flare.

Its the frequency AND the volume of them. Shit is distracting. Somehow plenty of non-JJ Abrams movies with a lot of lights don't fuckin' look like this.

We don't have to make excuses for the man, he admitted he was an addict, he had a problem, and he's taking action to dial back on it.

Its seriously like every 5-10 seconds

this isn't normal for just two people talking

This isn't my point. I'm not trying to argue that JJ Abrams didn't overdo it in the first Star Trek. As has been pointed out, he's admitted he leaned on it too heavily for atmosphere.

My point is that the large majority of people coughing up the meme don't understand why they're making fun of it beyond the fact someone else told them to make fun of it. They don't catch it in other movies, they don't even think to look for it anywhere else, and they likely didn't even notice it themselves until they were told to by someone else.

It's people fronting for the fuck of it. They know just enough about movies to know that if they say "lol lensflare jj" someone will pat them on the back for it.

IDK it seems pretty obvious to me. The man makes movies that a lot of fuckin lights showing up for no reason than because he thought it looked cool. They might not have known what the name was, but even my mom says, "I don't like all the bright lights in this movie". I don't think it was for any cool points.

I'm not saying he didn't overuse it, I'm saying even when he overused it there was motivation for the use of them. It's not like he just threw them in for literally no reason.

"Ancient design" is more telling that it's not some hacked together POS, but very deliberate instead.

Yeah, that's the most intriguing bit. How does Kylo know how to build a lightsaber based on ancient design? And how ancient are we talking?

I wonder if it predates the Jedi/Sith order. He talks about finishing what Vader started, but Vader didn't start anything. Can't wait for more context.

I'm getting Michael Meyers / Jason Voorhees vibes from him in the forest shots, honestly.

"I will finish what you started." He technically never mentions Vader, and Vader never really started anything in the Empire, Palpatine did.

Vader's the one who hunted down the Jedi and it seems apparent that Kylo idolises Vader in a way, with his own mask and recovering Vader's. I still think that's what Kylo's referring to, though I may be wrong.

Well to be honest, Anakin's goal was defeating death. It was the premise of the prequels and what led him to the darkside. He would become as strong as it took to defeat death.
Originally to save Padme, but he did have his own goal.
Hunting Jedi was not his goal, that was Palpatine's goal.

Absolutely, but how much does Kylo know about that period of time? Palpatine wasn't the one actively searching for them after Order 66, it was Vader and the Inquisitors too. We don't know how reliable Kylo's information is. Finn's been fed lies by the First Order about Luke. Kylo might just be following what he thinks happened.

It was the shittiest of motivations.

Almost as bad as a mother of newborn twins somehow losing the will to live and dying of a broken heart...all while a medical bot declares it as such.

The motivation was fine, the writing and the delivery was terrible.
Immortality has been a motivation of many that went crazy and did bad things.
Again it was just written terribly and the pacing was stupid.

Well, there was nothing about Anakin that should make immortality a goal/wish outside the fact that he's selfish and immature in regards to death. That is never fully established. So to your point, the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy was a petulant man child. Tier 1 writing right there. Not shocking Palpatine had no trouble "turning" him.

I saw a Kylo Ren action figure in a toy center and not buying it felt like the hardest decision of my life, it's soo badass and cool but I'm 25 now and I shouldn't play with toys so I'll just pretend I'm normal and buy Battlefront instead.

You don't have to play with it. It's not a toy, it's an action figure! I'm waiting for my Kylo to arrive.

There will be tons of better, cooler STATUES down the road. Just chill out.

Exactly. Truth be told I never noticed it in any of the Ep VII promotional materials - it really hasn't been overdone from what we've seen. It was an issue in Star Trek 09 but that's really about it. I don't remember how much Super 8 even had; I never noticed. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Still haven't seen a single Star Wars film yet. I've been checking the Blu Ray on Amazon UK and the price seems to rise every week. Hopefully there's some decent deals on Black Friday

You don't really need to have seen any of them to hop on with Force Awakens. Although you're probably right that the blu-ray set will move some units post-Thanksgiving. Betting there's gonna be a decent discount or two available.

Actually, considering Fox just re-released the complete set with new covers and such, I'd imagine the original blu-ray set will see some significant price cuts just to move it out of the warehouses.

Strangely enough, on Amazon's UK site the old set is 20 pounds more expensive. You can't even see the new one on the first page of search results.

There's also the possibility that his "I will finish what you started" line is from a completely different conversation in the film (perhaps with Snoke?) and that he's not talking to Vader's helmet at all. Might just be clever editing.

You should look online for the despecialised edition for episodes 4-6.
