Next-gen leaders talk about their consoles

Hey thorn can you give me a list of all this extra expensive stuff that's on the PS3? Cause USB slots and card reading slots are not expensive.

-blu-ray drive
-cf/sd/ms readers
-gigabit switch
-wi-fi
-bluetooth
-dual hdmi outputs

They might not be expensive but nothing comes free. a $10 extra cost becomes $100,000,000 when you sell 10 million consoles.

There's already enough filling in games nowadays, i doubt we need more of that.

The problem with the above statement is that each generation someone makes this same comment... but you and I have no idea what's coming next generation even in terms of coding richer worlds, more complex AI, etc.... and each generation you'll find games stuff to the gills of the selected storage format, and some not.

Just because we have a dual layer format not all games use it or even single layer to full capacity... but some do.

Just because next generation will have the Blu Ray storage format, not all will use the full capacity, but some will... and the increased read speeds will be a benefit.

Sorry as I've already said card readers aren't expensive.. neither is wifi or bluetooth implementation, the gigabit switch and the dual hdmi outputs are probably the pricest options, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the dual hdmi go away....

Yes and 10 million consoles sold also translates in to software profits from 1st party as well as 3rd party products. How nice of you to look at only HALF the picture.

I'm curious... are you under the impression(oh off the top of my head) that MS' wireless controllers, internal HD, USB slots and wifi add-on capability(because you have to built the interface in even if you don't put the final piece in) are incredibly cheap?

ONE CONSOLE, ALL GAMES!

Yes. Let's look at previous attempts at that - MSX, 3DO, Nuon. Yep, AWESOME IDEA!

This idea is like a BMW with a Hemi engine but bucket seats and whistle tips. Woop woop.

Well, almost everyone predicted the DS would be crushed and Nintendo vanquished from handhelds. But yet they still tighten their grip. War ain't over till it's over, Nintendo has no exit strategy, Microsoft DOES.

The PSP isn't supported by a 80 000 000 userbase and many successfull franchises like the PS3 is.

I don't understand what you're saying here, unless you're talking about Backwards Compatibility, in which case the PSP/NDS situation definitely shows how it may be very important (due to NDS success).

On thing for people talking about HD video, people who want HD video will be able to get it, and are in fact getting it easily in digital form on their computers. And you can stream movies (including HD ones) over your network to your X360. X360 DOES play HD movies, it just has an alternate delivery method; so BR in PS3 isn't HD Movies vs Not, it's just a difference in delivery method.

You understand what i said pretty good. There's wasn't a successfull PSP before the PSP that we know that build up a brand and got customer trust. There wasn't any franchises enticing thousands of people in buying some sequels since this "previous PSP" does not exist. PSP started from the beginning without backing and it's actually doing great, better than any competition Nintendo ever had.

Now people comparing the 360/PS3 situation to that are wrong. The PS3 will already have 80 000 000 of customers looking at it, it will be backward compatible so they are even more enticed to buy it. There will also be sequels for the games they loved on their Ps2. Really, the PS3 is so not starting from scratch against the 360 as the PSP is against the DS. ;)

Yes it's called XNA. Why make hardware when you can sell developers the software to create content? Why fight a long and bloody war against Sony and a company that can squeeze profit from a stone like Nintendo, when you can sell THEM and every third-party developer on earth middleware? Get a bunch to try your stuff out, get them accustomed to using it, then port it and sell it as a package like Office.

Software is what MS does best. Give or take three tries.

Nice hypothesis.... I don't see it going that way because I think there will be some resistance to a MS backed middleware package...

By whom? Their console gone, what is the resistance? A large amount of developers have used it, are comfortable with it and it's proven with X amount of games powered by it, games that could be quickly recompiled for a PC release to earn some extra cash.

Microsoft's strength is software, always will be. Well their optical mice are nice, but still.

if 360 fails to make a profit and take substantial market share I seriously wonder if Microsoft will pull the plug on the whole project.
