I'm not sure about currently, but I definitely recall seeing that as recently as a year ago. Also, those lists typically are only from female fans. The ladies love Kira. Why, I can't say I know.

I'm actually totally pumped about the idea of a SEED film to finish it up if they ever get to making it. As bad as Destiny is, that world and those mechs (sans Strike Freedom) are still cool.

There was a theory I read somewhere - most likely as a joke - that Lacus is some sort of Darth Sidious character behind the scenes.

Why do the ladies like Kira? Destiny proved that Athrun is the true ladies man of SEED with how every woman in his age range wanted Athrun's D.

I'm happy to see Shinn isn't even in the conversation. lol
Shinn was a poor mans Kamille Bidan. Half the characterization and none of the bishounen charm.
Kira was the blandest protagonist in the history of Gundam, which is an achievement on its own.
That honor still goes to "Banana" Links to me, but it's not even worth a debate. I was never on the Kira bandwagon and I pretty much set the damn thing on fire after Destiny since you couldn't even fucking logically argue with Kira. Athrun was right in many situations and Kira just turns to him and says, "Cagali is crying," fuck off Kira.

Incredibly unlikable too. Whereas Kamille grew from his whininess into a sharper and more mature attitude, Shin just grew to become an even bigger clueless dickhead.

You wait for the entire series for Shinn to receive an ass kicking on the level of this:
kamilleoptyzkf.gif

But it never happens. And every time Athrun lays a hand on him, which he needed he gets scolded for it. I always say if Shinn was in Zeta he would've gotten the shit beat out of him, Emma would not have stood for Shinn, she'd probably body slam the kid. Even now that I think about it Kamille had out bursts yes, but even from the beginning they didn't seem to come off as a sense of entitlement, Kamille just had a rather interesting way of looking at everything and used his own sense of logic. Shinn just fucking screamed at people. Seeing Kamille grow up was great though, he learned so much, the end was just too fucking sad though. You finally see him act like a kid with a sense of wonderment about everything and THAT fucking happens to him.

I really need to get around to watching Zeta some day. I've tended to be lukewarm on the UC stuff since it always just boils down to the same old Zeon Vs Earth Federation battle most of the time it felt like.

And I had no idea Yoshino was a writer on Guilty Crown, which is even more worrying. I knew Okouchi was on that show but not him. That show is one of the best examples of wasted potential I can recall on recent memory.

Dude watch Zeta it's great. Great music, mech designs and waifus.

Recently there's G Reconguista which had 26 episodes, and AGE which had 49 and a movie. I haven't seen G Reco but it's not suppose to be great. AGE is hit or miss, you might like it, you might hate it, you might like certain sections of it but not others.

Watch Universal Century or at least the highlights of it.
I guess what I am looking for is another "flagship" title. I don't keep up with the series but I always viewed Gundam Wing, Gundam Seed and Gundam 00 as mainline titles and the rest as spinoffs. AGE is clearly a spinoff. G Reconguista looks like a spinoff too. I'm not sure about Universal Century since I can't find it on MAL. If you meant Gundam Unicorn, that actually looks pretty good. I'll definitely give it a try.

If you want the real version of SEED Destiny, play SRW Z. Shinn is effectively made the main character, Athrun is better portrayed (thus improving Shinn in personality), Cagalli is actually competent, and everybody knows Kira is an asshole, just to name a few changes. (Tetsuya from Mazinger calls him a "holier-than-thou jackass who thinks he's better than everybody".)

How does a non Japanese speaking western American baka gaijin go about playing one of these?

You're seriously missing out on some great iconic moments if that's the case.
He really needs to watch ALL of UC before he watches Unicorn at least the main stuff up until ZZ since a lot of ZZ is actually in Unicorn.

It isn't.

But I'd say it's still more tolerable than AGE, for example.

Just that the first GBF was surprisingly good and Try was...surprisingly generic.
NOOOOOOOOOOooooooo

Fuck you sunrise :(

Especially since the terribad serious ones outweigh the fun awesome ones!

Last Gundam series I really liked was 00, though Unicorn and AGE were pretty good as well for the most part. Not really going to count Build Fighters, but it was entertaining.

Couldn't stand Reconquista though, so hopefully they'll do a better job with this.
AGE was the worst*, but was expected given that whatever Hino touches turns to shit.
*
Unless you count G-Saviour... but none should, ever.

If Gundam's gonna have a Cena, it's gotta be Kira Fucking Gary Stu Yamato.
Ah yes, Jesus Yamato.

The only way that Destiny turns into a watchable, tolerable hilarious trainwreck is if you see the Clyne Faction as the villains they were.

The only times I actually wanted to punch an animated character, was Kira for the entirety of Destiny.
Athrun is the true hero and secret main character of the SEED universe.

Flagship? Spinoffs? This isn't "Tales of" dude.
AGE is the TotT equivalent.

I so wish those games would be brought over. I hear they changed stuff with Code Geass too.

Flagship is whatever is running on TV, then there's manga side-stories, OVAs, and stuff like Gundam Build Fighters.

AGE and G-Reco are flagship shows, just like the rest.

Zeta does have the gimmick of making the Zeon look like the lesser evil for once, at least compared to the Titans and their fascist behavior. Some of the robot designs are great, but others just scream that they wanted the Macross/transforming robot audience at any cost. It's still worth watching, though often put on too high of a pedestal in the grand scheme of things.

Which is odd since Yoshino was the main guy on Guilty Crown and that's probably his worst show ever. Shu and Inori were terrible characters and dragged down any potential it could have had. But, like I said before, Yoshino also did the series composition for Macross Frontier and even co-wrote the movies with Kawamori (who isn't that hot of a writer either, truth be told). Which didn't exactly ruin the property forever or anything.

I so wish those games would be brought over. I hear they changed stuff with Code Geass too.

In that case it's nothing too radical. The single biggest change was give you the chance to save a few people and making
"trust Zero"
an option near the end so you can keep everyone on the same side. Which is nice, but not something that bothered me. If that's not one of your issues with the show, then you might not see such a big difference.

Athrun was even given the better Gundams and character arc. I love how he's the "Quattro" in Destiny, shit was hilarious. Kira just fucked shit up in the name of blind justice without thinking about everything.

He even tried the shades and the fake name for a bit as well. Alex Dino... as someone with the same last name, that's not swag enough Athrun! :P
Dude should've tried "Cinco Labia" or some shit.
There's a translation guide for one of the routes. But that's it. EDIT: There's an LP on SA, though.

Oh, and I forgot to mention one of the best parts -- Kira once gets slapped by Shinji Ikari from Evangelion because he cheesed him off that much!
Lol, what do you have to do to get slapped by Shinji?

I think half the fanbase would've just died laughing hearing Lunamaria call him "Cinco Labia-senpai."

On a random note, one thing that irks me is when military personnel in anime, especially Gundam, call higher ranking officials by their rank and first name. Wtf, we never did that in the army. We'd get Bright slapped for that! XD

Although hearing Lieutenant Vagina all throughout Zeta would've been rather interesting, heh.

The Code Geass plot is fairly intact, but the Geass characters are very important in the overall story -- the hero organization of Z2, ZEXIS, is formed and led by Lelouch, for example. Makes sense, since a lot of Geass characters are politicians/commanders.

And Geass is tied together with the other series, too, of course. e.g., the Union from Gundam 00 is controlled by the Britannian Empire, while the Chinese Federation is controlled by the Human Reform League.

I think the only remote explanation is that the higher ranking officers are usually still teenagers in Gundam. Zechs, Treize and Noin were probably the same age as the people beneath them. But I see exactly what you're talking about. Who are even the oldest people to serve in Gundam? I can only think of Norris Packard, Lieutenant Burning, the Geezers in Victory other than that I'm drawing a blank...probably that insane dude that manipulated the queen in Victory as well as the guy that Gato served, Zinnerman in Unicorn

I'll have to see if I can find it online somewhere. I'd just pick up the Complete Collections, but they appear to be completely out of print like pretty much everything else from Bandai that didn't get picked up by someone else. I do hope we eventually get re-releases of some of those, perhaps on Blu-ray. My G Gundam sets are doing alright, but I worry I'll wear them out eventually.

I've read a bit about it and that was one of things that actually caught my interest. I'm kind of glad they largely got away from that to stay with their own thing, though they do seem to dabble in it every so often with at least one of the suits in a series. I don't generally have any illusions that a series is going to be "the best ever" or something like that these days. If the writing is halfway competent and is engaging, I'll be satisfied.

I probably did see his name at some point, but focused on Okouchi because I was more familiar with him. I haven't seen much of Yoshino's work by comparison and largely know him by reputation. I know, it was such a disappointment seeing what that show turned into when it had a lot of stuff I liked such as the design and music. I've never actually seen Frontier but have always heard generally good things.

Ah, so it didn't go beyond that? I'd heard about those and was curious what else might have been changed. It was one of my issues with the show largely due the way it came about feeling really stupid to my eyes, but hardly the least of my issues with the series. I'd honestly be curious to see Code Geass get the full treatment Destiny seemed to get, though maybe that'd be a bit more challenging.

Well, that's interesting at the very least so thank you for the details. I keep debating on importing a few of these games, but fear the lack of understanding would hamper any enjoyment I might have.

You didn't find Universal Century on MAL because it is the timeline for multiple shows, I probably should have made sure you knew that before, my bad. Technically the series is split into multiple universes or timelines with the Universal Century timeline being the main story of Gundam and the others being alternate timelines.

Wing, 00, and Seed all fall under alternate timelines as do AGE and G Reco. There are a lot of shows in the U.C. timeline, I haven't seen them all and other people could tell you more about any of them than I could. That being said of the U.C. shows you should consider are the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, 0080: War in the Pocket, The 08th MS Team, and Unicorn.

Unicorn is probably the most of what you're looking for in similarities to the other shows, but it's short and wraps up the end of the U.C. story. While you could enjoy it without watching the rest you might get more out of it by seeing or at least reading about the events of the Universal Century.

Also if you haven't all ready seen Endless Waltz check it out since it is the Wing movie.

Thank you. I will watch the UC ones that you listed before Unicorn. I hope they hold up well.

Kira was the blandest protagonist in the history of Gundam, which is an achievement on its own.

Seed has some of the best characters in Gundam series (outside of classic Gundam or 8th MS team) - compare them to Gundam Wing where you don't even know why those characters are fighting or I'm pacifistics because I'm pacifist princess or Gindam 00 when they have paper thin motivation. Stuff like After War Gundam-X also doesn't play int he same league as Seed.

Of course Destiny ruined it with Shin x earth super psychotic pilots but still even Shinn was better than Heero Yuy.

Also Seed at least tried to give some reasoning why Kira is better than seasoned veterans instead of lol guy falls into invincible robots and smashes enemies.

And in Seed you don't see indestructible gundams that can withstand assault of 1000 common mech - technological gap from Freedom to classic Zaku is much smaller.

PS. Now I feel like I need to rewatch it again :D

SEED is a bad show filled with bad characters, bad writing, and shitty animation. Destiny didn't ruin anything, it was just a worse show following a bad one.
