What normally happens in the NHL with respect to negotiating 'sign and trades' with upcoming UFAs? Seems pretty sketchy and unrealistic, no?

That's my opinion, but maybe I'm wrong. Hoping to open discussion here before CCF gets too deep into negotiations.

[edit] Also worth pointing out that guys could severely decline (I don't think Tootoo will) and even retire (eg, Doan).

Is Tootoo an upcoming UFA? I haven't even looked.

I'm more just trying to make my intentions known. I'll wait to enter into any real talks about trades until we're actually allowed to trade.

Yeah. A bunch of your players are upcoming UFAs, which is both good and bad. Guys like Tootoo (76 overall) are normally very easy to replace through free agency, and can even be got on 2-way contracts, but it can be really difficult to replace higher end players ( > 80) since they get so much interest.

Fair enough. Definitely no problem discussing trades for guys under contract, though, imo. It happens in real life (even when it shouldn't), so why not here. But I think 'sign and trades' are something that should be dealt with first since it raises problems.

To be fair, technically we're still before the SCF, so if this was real life, Tootoo COULD be traded on draft day and wouldn't be a sign&trade. Since that's not possible in the game as we sim final&draft at the same time, I think it's fair game to do a trade like that, esp if it's agreed upon before draft day.

In real life, can you trade UFA negotiating rights? Does that concept even exist? I know RFA rights can be traded before July1st, UFA-rights aren't a thing, or are they?

All valid points, but it was just going to be a 1 for 1 swap for a 4th line player. I only want Tootoo 'cause I've met him a few times when I lived up north and I liked him in Junior.

I didn't realize he was a UFA and was planning on waiting until the ratings rollover anyways.

Bryzgalov was traded as a UFA and then signed with Philly, for example. It does happen. But it's rare because there's no assurance that the player will negotiate in good faith with the team that just traded assets for him.

too be fair, that was my beginning season roster. just pulled up an older post.
it was fixed up as the season progressed (called up mackinnon pretty much)
no idea how I was 8th. was about to blow my team up
