"What happened was (Nonis) called me and asked if we'd be interested in talking about (Clarkson)," Murray told the Sun. "I think (Clarkson) will be better elsewhere and there's no question that what happened in Toronto was not a good thing for him or the team.

"I threw some names at (Nonis) and he said he would take their contracts and I said, 'It has to be more than that and you'd have to eat some money to.' We just talked one day and I told him I'd think about it."

Murray said he sat on the idea of acquiring Clarkson for a couple of days while doing his due-diligence. His concern was the Leafs weren't going to be taking back enough money and the way contract is structured there is so much in signing bonus that Toronto couldn't pick up enough to have it make sense.

The reason Murray paused to think is he's always liked Clarkson and tried to sign him as a UFA before he went to the Leafs. Murray believes getting out of the spotlight in Columbus may help a player like Clarkson.

"I just called back (two days later) and said it doesn't work," Murray said. "When he played in New Jersey, I always thought he was a competitive guy. I didn't think he was worth quite the contract that he got (from Toronto).

"We talked him before he went to Toronto. I think he's competitive and he plays with grit. I watched us play (Los Angeles Thursday) and I thought we need that grit in our lineup, a guy who can stand up for our players, but it wasn't him."

Murray added he feels he'll be able to find that kind of player either through trade or free agency in the off-season.

Lol Murray you idiot we won that game against one of the hottest team in the league and on a back to back, and it still made you think we needed a Clarkson.

EDIT: Based on some of the quotes from the Sloan Sports conference.. Kyle Dubas seems like one sharp hockey mind. We'll see how that translates to success for the Leafs.

I forget who it was earlier who said he wished the Leafs traded Bozak in November.

Remember Shanahan had to prove this team was shit, probably would have had a harder time "convincing" the idiots above that moving Bozak was for the best. :(

Afternoon game against the top team who is a beast at home and one of two teams who have not lost two regulation games in a row (They lost the last game in regulation and us being the others) along with us just coming back from the west coast and still missing our captain and with Gus in net........ This should be fun.

I wonder what the Sens could get for Cowen. I mean we did just get two straight shutouts against two of the best teams in the NHL with our 3rd string goalie without him in the lineup.

Sens should keep Weirdcock, his underlying stats suggest he might be very undervalued right now. High likelihood of fleecing if you trade him now.
