"What happened was (Nonis) called me and asked if we'd be interested in talking about (Clarkson)," Murray told the Sun. "I think (Clarkson) will be better elsewhere and there's no question that what happened in Toronto was not a good thing for him or the team.
"I threw some names at (Nonis) and he said he would take their contracts and I said, 'It has to be more than that and you'd have to eat some money to.' We just talked one day and I told him I'd think about it."
Murray said he sat on the idea of acquiring Clarkson for a couple of days while doing his due-diligence. His concern was the Leafs weren't going to be taking back enough money and the way contract is structured there is so much in signing bonus that Toronto couldn't pick up enough to have it make sense.
The reason Murray paused to think is he's always liked Clarkson and tried to sign him as a UFA before he went to the Leafs. Murray believes getting out of the spotlight in Columbus may help a player like Clarkson.
"I just called back (two days later) and said it doesn't work," Murray said. "When he played in New Jersey, I always thought he was a competitive guy. I didn't think he was worth quite the contract that he got (from Toronto).
"We talked him before he went to Toronto. I think he's competitive and he plays with grit. I watched us play (Los Angeles Thursday) and I thought we need that grit in our lineup, a guy who can stand up for our players, but it wasn't him."
Murray added he feels he'll be able to find that kind of player either through trade or free agency in the off-season.
They do that quite often for big draws. Billy Joel has a bunch of those lying around as well.
Woo, thanks ducks. Now close it out, no drama plz.
Second, do your job Habs.
Do your fucking job tonight.
Thanks to hrtc it takes an hour to scroll to the bottom of this page
This. No loser points tonight please.
Carey Price to shit the bed tonight, confirmed.
Unless we get the back-up goalie tonight?
I forget who it was earlier who said he wished the Leafs traded Bozak in November.
Remember Shanahan had to prove this team was shit, probably would have had a harder time "convincing" the idiots above that moving Bozak was for the best.
Tim Gleason gets traded again? Okay.
EDIT: Capitals acquire Tim Gleason.
God fucking dammit.
Tim Gleason gets traded again? Okay.
EDIT: Capitals acquire Tim Gleason.
Gleason?
Bah! For Hillen and a 4th? BAH!
@jonasTSN1050 said:Phil Kessel says he has "absolutely no idea" what the Leafs plan is right now. "I signed 8 years here so I want to be here. We'll see."
Watch us give up a ransom for the sex fiend Sharp.
"@DarrenDreger: Sens getting calls on Gryba, Wiercioch and Phillips.
whats the story behind this?
Translation:
I signed for 8 years because I wanted money to feed myself, however this team is nothing but a failure since I have been here and I can't really say anything bad about them for PR reasons, but someone please get me out of here!
TAKE THEM ALL!!!!!!!
pls keep weirdcock I still like his upside.
Yay Habs didn't get Gleason.
Though I can see them getting another terrible dman.
