He had the second most points among rookie defencemen in the OHL this season. He led rookie D scoring in the playoffs.

He's a huge guy, but the scouting reports suggest that he's got some skill.

Most of his points came on the Powerplay.

Not really worried about that for a player like this. Drafting a huge D with *some* offensive instincts that can handle the puck is a risk worth taking. This isn't just another Middleton/Mattinen wasted pick, IMO.

A lot of guys who follow Habs prospects in Europe seem to be quite high on this Ikonen kid.

Whether anything happens at the draft regarding Phaneuf remains to be seen but it's clear if OTT can move him and his contract, they will.

Everyone's down on Hamonic after last year, but he was widely considered a top pair D-man before now.

I'm more interested in WHY he had a bad year.

Playing through injury?
Personal issues (why he asked for a trade) were a distraction?
Ramped up QoC?
Worse D partner?
Bad luck?

Habs Pick two Defenceman in the third round

Cale Fleury and Scott Welford. Cale sounds like a great pick for Montreal.

He's also the brother of Haydn Fleury

So, the Devils chose Patrick for the Flyers.

Then the Flyers trade for two players they think'll be on the rise. Frost is stuck behind several picks from previous drafts, but has worked his way into the top 6, so they're probably banking on his numbers improving as he ends up getting more ice time in the future. Ratcliffe is on a bad team with some pretty good numbers, so they're expecting more from him.

Ustimenko was interesting. How long do the rights last for Russian players? Given the current goaltender pipeline, maybe wanted a long term project that wouldn't get immediately blocked by the current group?

Hopefully they pan out. Not expecting much from the fourth round in this draft.

in consecutive years, Edmonton and Calgary each acquire 2nd pair (maybe borderline 1st pair) D-men

one paid a (likely) mid-1st and two 2nds, the other paid Taylor Hall

Calgary improved their team for sure. That was just by getting a better goalie. If Hamonic plays well, they'll be a contender. Things looking up!

But their cable providers will be the same though. So there's that.
