Ninja Gaiden II IGN review

day 1, not concerned by anything...ok maybe framerate but from what I could read it is just during a few parts with so much going on at once it actually looks cool (selective reading?)

this is NG, with better graphics and weapons, more action, and dismemberment.

Why do these games even have "stories"? Is it just for the niche fetichists as NY Times put it? Christ, just keep it on the level of street fighter, contra etc. and provide background, the gameplay is already good enough.

Let games be games.

A word about the retail vs reviewable copy debate: NGII didn't go gold until last week, May 23 to be exact. That gold print is the final version, the ones being reviewed right now were not final, just close enough to be reviewable.

Really? You require good stories in action games?
I don't need oscar quality story writing but something moderately interesting.
It was probably the reason why I had to force myself to play Lost Planet rather than playing it to enjoy it, the story and voice acting was horribly bad, thankfully I only paid $5 to play it.
Shame because the actual game and gameplay wasn't too bad, I'm sure NG2 is similar.

playing DMC4 I felt like there were 3 options for approaching an enemy (which was most often spawned across the screen from your character)

1. run at a plodding pace towards them
2. walk at a plodding pace towards them while shooting
3. use the sword dash attack

Maybe I'm just used to ninja gaiden but having a jump that goes directly vertical rather than launching you towards the enemy with a variety of attack options in midair makes for a slow action game to me. It was the most consistent complaint for me - I really struggled to find ways to approach distant enemies quickly to keep combos going. DMC4's characters really do move slow, too. Especially when you're walking across huge expanses in the game and you can only start moving decently fast after getting an upgrade and a head start going one direction, and that resets itself if you stop again..

4. Learn how to properly play DMC4 where you can attack eviscerate every enemy in your path by being precise and quick with your movements.

It just sounds like you were scared shitless of approaching a horde of enemies, so you held back and let them come to you instead of attacking them relentlessly.

good score but still, paint me shocked and disappointed that IGN didn't give a 9+ overall rating for it.

Sounds like they tried to adress some of the issues with NG1 - save the terrible story-telling. Don't know why the game didn't break 9.0 but meh. Honestly the game is too hard for my tastes.

Actually, no, Eurogamer used retail copies, but we haven't had 900 people say this yet.

Same or similar camera, fine with me. I dig that shit, makes the game even harder :lol

They very well may have. I'm just struggling trying to understand how they got retail copies when the game only went gold a few days ago.

I'm sure no one will be able to definitively answer this, so just carry on with the dissection of IGN's review.

Same thing I was wondering as well.

mid-combat loading? dayum itagaki explain yourself! that shit was awful in sigma.

and sigma also dropped more frames if you set your ps3 to upscale. lol itagaki didn't fix hayashi's mistakes xD

So they managed to get a printed retail copy from Microsoft, beat the game, and review it in 2 days?

Why do people still read Eurogamer? It's just a bunch of highschool students writing in a blog. They have some of the most ridiculous reviews I've ever read. (Halo 3 for example)

I never found an issue with a camera. It was just an extra button I had to press usually when I was blocking in the original Ninja Gaiden.

The mistakes I made were my fault. Not blocking or rolling away from danger at the right time.

Because it's the only review site besides maybe shacknews worth reading. I agree about Halo 3 though as they gave it 10/10 which is about 3 points too high.

I find it odd that a game like GTA4 garners 10s almost every where despite having freezes, framerate issues, bad loading, horrible quirky camera, pop in, disappearing items, save corruptions and many other issues but yet a couple of problems with the game which isn't bad at all and the reviewers are crying. I'm glad I never bought any game based on reviewers review.

Are Kojima and Nomura a joke too? Or does this only only apply to 360-exclusive developers' statements?

Just trying to figure out the pattern here.....

You must realise that this is gaf and anything MS instantly labelled a joke our is bashed. Just take majority of these Sony fanboys as jokers and you won't get bothered by their hypocrisy.

Well either reviewers are corrupt or they've had about enough with Itagaki

And you tell me through 5 versions fo GTA 3D games, reviewers haven't had aenough of these issues with the game? I mean the same issues for GTA constantly pop up but yet still get high reviewers. I'm just thinking that maybe MS didn't pay their money hats to them for the game.

Kojima and Nomura don't run there mouths screaming how much better there games are then other peoples.

You've got a very good point there mate. I do see a lot of bitterness out there (and here tbh) over the interweb. Maybe he's a bit too flashy for his own good. Maybe Itagaki should behave in a way westerners would like to portray a Japanese dev. You know, the usual timid, shy and bashfull characters you see everyday.

But then again, fuck it!

This. And Kojima and Nomura do not put down their own development teams work, publicly.

It's alllll hype man. It's funny cause they turn around and mark Metroid Prime 3 down because some of the doors took longer to open (load the next area), and that was basically it's only fault.

I think the reviewers are fooling themselves if they think the unfair sections are new. Jumping platforms while trying to avoid skeleton archer fire? Archers that respawn every time you fail? Successive bossfights with no save points? The original NG had all that.
Sounds like a bunch of archaic, artificial game-lengthening techniques to me.

I wonder if Itagaki is going to do to some of these reviewers what he did to the guy at Gaming Age who gave the original Ninja Gaiden a C.

kojima and nomura (as far as i know, as i know almost nothing about nomura):
-don't exclusively wear leather or all black
-don't wear sunglasses 24/7, indoors and out, in an attempt to cover their horrible skin and ruin their silly rockstar persona
-don't make games that are merely an excuse to make tits jiggle in real-time
-don't make ridiculously retarded comments about "losing face" and things like "honor" as if he was some anime character in an epic battle against evil
-don't make fanboy comments bashing other games that are sometimes better than his own

so i don't know why you'd even compare them

They are explicitly clear.

NOMURA certainly is a joke. I think we can all agree there.

I swear each console group on GAF thinks the other 2 groups are bigger and out to get them lol, along with the reviewers

wow i'm in love with this post

EDIT: ohhhh minus the Nomura... he's not bad, but he can be a joke every now and then

sigma performed worse in 1080p as well.

not saying framedrops ain't present in 720p just saying he should have tried it.

I'm not really concerned about the content of the review-- I already have the game paid in full. I am just stunned at the number of people who come into a review thread and don't read the review or the thread.

So it seems like neither NG2 nor DMC4 have redefined the action game genre.

You keep telling yourself that.

Ninja Gaiden II is an excellent sequel that'll have you lopping off heads and performing all sorts of sweet moves. It takes everything that worked in the original and bumps it up to even more insane levels. We're talking gallons of blood, and that's just in the first stage. 9/10
