Nintendo and why I still love them. (56k no)

I had to move and live with my Godmother in 1988 after my mother died in a car crash.
I was hurting bad mentally because I was in the back seat and saw the car hit the tree crushing my mother... So at 14 life really started to suck.

Before moving away my homeroom class in the school I was in got me my first Nintendo Entertainment System. I had a very hard time adjusting to life at my Godmother's, my only escape was to play games. The best thing was my Godmother's daughter worked at a toys store where she got NES games for me at a discount, by the time I left High School I had over 90 games.

So I am visiting my Godsister a for a few weeks, she has three sons a 14 year old (SONY Car racing games FAN) and Twins that are 8 (POKEMON - DRAGONBALL Z - Yu-Gi-Oh! nuts) They all love SONY, so yesterday I went to the local KB and got them a replacement PSone because the old PSX is dead.

I got them this only as a trade to take my old collection of NES games.
They don't have a NES to play them most of my stuff are gone.
Most of them are lost or just so caked up with sugar and food. Everytime I visit my collection shrinks or they traded them for PSone games. (kids suck)

But going through many bags of NES carts really brought back the real reason I love Nintendo... SO MANY CLASSICS! So much good memories.

I hope playing Sony games means as much to them at 31 years old, as growing up with Nintendo games did for me. I just got a DS and I may got a PSP or PS3 in the future but I still love good old Nintendo. Haters SUCK IT!

I'm taking my NES Carts home

Damn Nas. You bring back a lot of melodramatic memories for me back when I was little with all those nes games!

R.C. Pro-Am and those damn oil slicks! I'd be ready to win, then on the last curve, a strategically placed oil slick would get me. I hated that game, but for some reason played it all the freakin' time.

I often think about those old NES games but it looks nice to actually see them.

I remember that Duck Hunt/SMB combo cart pissed me off for some reason...I always had it out for Duck Hunt.

Million's Secret Castle has to be my most embarrassing rental ever, I got stuck at the very start, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what to do.

I'm glad I found this old stash, I still have to clean them and find a working NES

I wonder if the batteries died by now?
Or if they are worth anything?

IAWTP. I loved that game.

nice collection naz.

I remember going to my friends place just as SMB3 came out, and just played and played and played. Many long nights, good times.

Oh another secret from my NES past... I could never land on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun T_T

edit: Bubble Bobble is the game that cost me the most money at my local gas station as a kid, so the NES version was a dream come true :)

Agree, this thread is also the reason i think the Gamecube userbase is probably the oldest of them all. Those who grew up with nes or snes have a hard time letting the future nintendo consoles slip by even though it's not the same nintendo today.

Most of today's kids never experienced nintendo's golden days, and they probably skip the gamecube because xbox and ps2 are heard are more popular and "hip"

I agree 100% only the older gamers could truly love Nintendo.

note: never had Section Z

did u have a game called Section Z? I swear that was one of the hardest game ever.
I had Section Z -- yeah, hardest game ever! I even had Section Z: Nemesis (?) for the original GameBoy. I was a glutton for pain. :)

+1 for Milo's Secret Castle just sitting on the shelf. :lol :lol

Nah, most people who grew up on Nintendo have moved on to the more "mature" games out there, most which happen to be on the other systems.

Kids today want to play the same games that adults do. It probably would have been the same for us, but back in the NES days, video games were considered to be "kiddy."

None said anything about PRO WRESTLING? I wasted so many hours on that loved it!

I can't find my TigerHeli cart and many others :(

I never did get far with GOLGO 13... I just liked playing that hotel window level over and over again

Well, it's true. seing those old school nes sure bring memories. I had countless blades of steel tournaments with my friends.

Nintendo will always be in my heart thanks to nes and snes, and of course some great games on the N64.

On the subject of Hardest games, I sincerely doubt Robocop for the SNES had more than one level. Did anyone ever ever pass the first level?

Yes, lots of people love Nintendo and the NES. Thank you for justifying your fanboyism. We need more people like you in this world.

Awwwww, Your Approval means so much to me :)

Question: where is the best place to find an old NES other than Ebay?

Naz, I feel you on this one. I've never experinced a tragedy like yours, but I grew up as military brat. I didn't have too many friends growing up and when my parents were both working my brother and I could not go out and do much. The NES was there when there was no more homework to do and there was no more books to read or movies to watch at home.

I dont think anyone ever managed to land in Top Gun. On a side note, I think the NES and SNES are prime example of what made Nintendo so cool. I never liked anything from them past the snes. I have about 20 hours MAX logged in my n64 and gamecube, combined. Yet I could pop in my nes a random game and play for hours.

I have fond memories of the Bubble Bobble + Rainbow Island games.

The reasons I love Nintendo are more from the SNES era onwards. I'm not gonna talk just Nintendo-only games here, or games made by Nintendo themselves, I'm gonna list things that remind me of the fun I've had with Nintendo systems. In no order whatsoever, behold my stream of conciousness:

SNES: Pilotwings, Mario All Stars, Super Mario Kart, Mario Paint, Super Castlevania, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat II, Flashback, Super Scope 6, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Final Fantasy III/IV, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Unirally, Starfox, Super R Type, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: Super Mario RPG
Gameboy (pre-GBA): Tetris, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Super Mario Land, Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, Gameboy Camera/Printer, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons
Nintendo 64: Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, Goldeneye 007, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart 64, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, 1080 Snowboarding, Snowboard Kids, Starfox 64, ISS 64, Blast Corps, Paper Mario, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron
GBA: Golden Sun, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, Mario Kart Super Circuit, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past/Four Swords, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Mario Vs Donkey Kong, Metroid: Fusion/Zero Mission, Advance Wars, Wario Ware, Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Kuru Kuru Kururin, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Gamecube: Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunsine, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Disk, F Zero GX, Resident Evil/Resident Evil Ø, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Timesplitters 2, Wario Ware: Mega Party Game$, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Super Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball 2, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online I&II, Tales of Symphonia, Soul Calibur II, Viewtiful Joe, Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, Beyond Good & Evil, Paper Mario 2: The Thousand Year Door, Burnout 2: Point of Impact, Pikmin 2, Super Smash Bros: Melee, Donkey Konga (PAL) + Bongo Drums + Second set of bongo drums. I've probably left loads on all formats out.

Things I like about the general play experience when I use a Nintendo system:

they always have very nice, very comfortable controllers. The non-conformity to Dual Shock standards like analog face buttons probably hurt them on some ports, but the GC pad is very comfortable. Fast load times, four controller ports as standard, nothing superfluous. With Gameboy - it's backwards compatability and the not necessarily easy, but simple (often 'old school'), gameplay. I hope they continue to seek out more third party support, because they really do need it with MS and Sony doing so well, but they're still fucking awesome as is IMO! I get the sense from news these past few years that they're gaining ground with Japanese developers that they lost with N64.. they should try to make that kind of effort in America and Europe. The DS seems to be making a clever differentiation from it's upcoming rival that will see it get good exclusive games and dependable third party support, and hopefully there's an element of that in Revolution without it alienating the dev community. Because really - I think it's very easy to sit down at a Nintendo system and have a lot of fun with Nintendo games and Nintendo exclusives. That's why they're still in the game this generation in worldwide terms. If they could only offer what the competition offered in terms of the third party extras, and open-ness to whatever is the latest gaming related topical-buzz (like online) --- they'd be a no-brainer purchase every generation for most gamers worth their salt.

=================

edit: i'd just like to add that while I did list games SNES onwards, here's some honourable NES mentions:

Super Mario Bros, Metroid, Legend of Zelda, Excite Bike, World Cup, Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Bubble Bobble, Tetris, Super Mario Bros 2/USA, Super Mario Bros 3, Final Fantasy I/II, Turtles, Marble Madness, Maniac Mansion, A Boy and His Blob.

Theres so many good memories from the NES days. It just doesn't seem like these newer generation games are going to have the same effect when they get to be 15-20 years old. Already I'm looking at my older PS2 games and saying "gee, do I really need that game anymore?" While I never said that about any of the good 'ol NES games.

Am I like the only one who has Duck Hunt and Mario Bros on seperate cartridges? I remember when my friends wanted to borrow some NES games last year and they were all surprised that I had seperate cartridges for each game. I guess I was just an early adopter

Adults don't play video games.....except for the unemployeed ones. :lol

You guys on this board really need to understand that the majority of people in this country and the world still think that video games are for kids. Just because you play a game that says mature on it doesn't mean people consider it mature. General perception are that video games are for kids and losers and its going to be a little while longer before a 40 year old man playing Madden is considered acceptable.

BTW kids always want to play or do something that makes them look more like an adult and adults want to be able to go back and be younger again. Its the "You want what you can't have" syndrome. Kids will always try and mimic things that adults do or things that are considered "adult". Advertisers are always all over this to get kids to buy things that they normally wouldn't. Its kinda like how the people who aren't cool go around saying that they are and buying shit to "prove" they are but the people who are truly cool don't have to because they and everyone else already knows they are cool. If you have to keep reminding people that you are cool then you are far from cool.

You don't know what kind of memories you just brought back for me. I am definetly going to have to bring out my NES and start playing it tonight. Kid Icarus, Kung-Fu, Excitebike, and LOZ were my babysitters all throughout my childhood. :D

Edit: I just looked at your pics in more detail, and noticed an R.C. Pro Am cartridge. My cousin and I played that religously. We had such great tournaments, trying to beat each other's times. Good times.....good times.

Nostalgia is nice and all but you f00s need to stop paying so much for these remakes so we don't get gouged on them anymore.

My mom got me the set with the stupid robot, R.O.B. I begged her for it forever and a day, and when it was finally there under the tree on Christmas day, I almost flipped my shit!

You can imagine my youthful frustration with the suck that was Gyromite and R.O.B. the robot. The damn thing had no other real use except for that game for me, and it didn't do what it was supposed to half the time. It was easier to just use two controllers yourself or have someone else play along instead of the damn robot. And to top it off, Gyromite wasn't a very good game. At least I had Duck Hunt, tho.

However, that set didn't come with Super Mario Bros. I played it a couple months later at a friend's place, and when I did I came home and kicked the robot across the living room, and then we blew it to f'ing pieces that summer with fireworks.

And that's why I hate Olimario.

I had a R.O.B. for a while too never used it much

The NES is likely responsible for a good number of us being on the forum, as in that's sort of where many of us started. I was just a tad too young for the Atari, I had it but I honestly can't remember playing any games on it. NES I can remember, Adventure Island, Adventures of LoLo, Blaster Master, Castlevania and all that good stuff.

It's also largely why Nintendo remains in business. Sega, Atari, Intellivision, Calico. Nintendo outlasted them, Sega and Atari are still around but not in the way Nintendo is. So Nintendo may sort of qualify as a sacred cow. We don't ever want to see it go away, even me and they sort of lost me to the Genesis back in the day.

Nintendo certainly has a place in most of our hearts.
