I loved Ghost of Tsushima... why am I not excited for Ghost of Yotei??

Female warriors existed back then folks. Don't understand why people think that this game is woke just because you play as a female.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onna-musha

From your own source:

Because of the influence of Edo neo-Confucianism (1600–1868), the status of the onna-musha diminished significantly, their duties become focused on the home, whilst their husbands became bureaucrats or police agents.

Travel during the Edo period was demanding and unsettling for many female samurai due to tight restrictions. They always had to be accompanied by a man, since they were not allowed to travel by themselves. Additionally, they had to possess specific permits establishing their business and motives. Samurai women also received much harassment from officials who manned inspection checkpoints.

The onset of the 17th century marked a significant transformation in the social acceptance of women in Japan. Many samurai viewed women purely as child bearers; the concept of a woman being a fit companion for war was no longer conceivable. The relationship between a husband and wife could be correlated to that of a lord and his vassal. According to Ellis Amdur, "husbands and wives did not even customarily sleep together. The husband would visit his wife to initiate any sexual activity and afterwards would retire to his own room".

I think far too many people are assuming the game has the voice actress' politics in it somehow. That makes zero sense to me. She isn't writing it. She's just the voice. But yeah......if they do try to shoehorn bullshit modern day politics into this game then I'll grab my pitchfork, but there is no indication at all that this is the case. If folks just don't want to play as a woman character then yeah.....obviously this game is not for them.
To be fair, almost all actors and actresses are quite left wing.

I have an open mind and look forward to the reveal.

Is the witcher 4 woke now that geralt isn't the protagonist then? Is the tomb raider series woke because laura croft can manhandle men in the game? Nothing i've seem from ghost of yotei looks woke in the least and the protagonist looks like a normal samurai looking woman.
Maybe? Not saying it's 100% guaranteed to be woke. I'm saying there's a good chance it will be given the last decade of garbage ass woke entertainment that has been shoved down everyone's throats.

I'm definitely in "wait and see" mode instead of "get hyped" mode and I'm not surprised that others feel the same.

Giving too much benefit of the doubt for sony studios is not a great idea this days... not after all the evidence in the later games/sequels... and if in fact this is another by the numbers girl boss trope ... this time can we stablish the pattern ?...

I get your point, we dont know, but if I had to bet my money, welp.

Since the game takes place during the edo period then wouldn't it make sense that she's hiding herself in clothes and a hat since the onna-musha were diminishing and travel was restricted for women. So what was said in the wiki makes sense for the setting that the game is going for historically.

This have to do with you liking and sticking with the main character.
Nothing wrong with that. The only ones who tell you're wrong are Cuckman and his fans.
Also Sony nowadays are almost aways about representation and social bullshit, so its almost garanted it will be a monologue slop.

The first game was a dream come true to me, pure magical experience. I'd been waiting years for Assassin's Creed to deliver that fantasy but Sucker Punch came out swinging, one of my fav modern games. And while I'm still planning on playing this, my hype is relatively low. And honestly, for me, it's a mix of things. I have recently realised that, for myself, in order to be hyped for a *sequel*, that sequel needs to come out relatively quickly. This doesn't go for every single game ever, but games that have a tried and true approach, that aren't really changing things up, innovating and pushing the envelope in unique ways...if you take 5+ years for that type of game, my interest will just naturally diminish. 5 years. 5 years for a sequel that doesn't really seem to be doing anything different or impressive enough to warrant that long dev time. The reason doesn't matter, complex and long dev cycles yadda yadda, I know that. But I can't change how I feel. We do not have infinite time on this planet and if you take too long my interest will just slowly fade away, period. Because of this I also had 0 interest in Spiderman 2 either. Interests also change, I just can't hold the same excitement for a similar experience on the same level forever, which is perfectly natural.

Another reason is the complete change in setting and character. I connected to Jin and loved his journey through Tsushima, and IIRC the Mongols actually invaded a *second time* and attacked mainland Japan. Considering how Tsushima ended we could've easily gotten another sequel with him instead of Kill Bill over here. Would've definitely helped in making me more excited. Still, I'm open to see what SP has done, just going in with low expectations.

It just looks like another super safe "more of the same" sequel from Sony like GOW, Horizon, Spiderman, etc.
And the first game, while fun, already felt like 1000 other games we've played because it's a cookie cutter Ubisoft style game with a somewhat better combat system and story. The first game got carried by basically being "AC in Japan", but the novelty has now worn off.

Also 90% of the marketing so far has focused on the setting and story which is so insanely generic that it's almost the same setup as the other open world game featuring a female assassins in ancient japan that launched earlier this year

Funny......but that ain't Ghost of Yotei
Ironically, it actually exposes just how poor the marketing has been for this game. We've had two trailers and almost a year of marketing and yet the main character is an enigma. We have barely seen her speak. We dont know her personality. We have yet to see her speak with a human being so we definitely have nothing to go by other than the actresses' own online persona which is that of a non-binary gen z moron.

All we have so far is that she was wronged as a child and is out for revenge. You could put that in a two sentence synopsis. The trailers need to do far more than that. And they have failed miserably.

The previous GOT campaign was ok. We got a teaser showing that he;s out for revenge, but the next showing was an 8 minute gameplay sequence with Jin actually engaging in a confrontation with an ally. Nothing major but it showcases that this guy has principles and balls to stand up to his own people. we dont know jack shit about her and the game is launching in three months.

2025 and how are we?

"videogame has woman. woke"
Yes, because the devs and publishers decided to turn videogames into a leftist social engineering operation. They've talked about it openly.

Can't blame people for being cautious and just avoiding shit that gives a hint of this nonsense. Like 50,000 games come out a year, I don't need to play Girlboss of Yotei.

Zero hype for it so far. Give me either high masculine energy (stoicism, duty, honor, focus, discipline, martial prowess, lone-wolf journeys) or hyper-stylized femininity. I'm not interested in anything in between.

Because woman bad? 🙂

But I kinda agree, I'm not really that hyped for it. I wasn't for the original either though, but ended up absolutely loving it. This one will be great too.

I liked Tsushima but didn't love it. Too much filler and ubisoftisis.
So I am not hyped for Yotei either. But I have an open mind and hope to be pleasantly surprised.
The dumbass actress is not helping either though.

We've seen it all before. GoW, Spider-Man, Horizon all fell off with the sequel. More of the same.

Of course, because it's Sony, politics will be inserted in order to appease woke game journalists. This concern is only reenforced when you look into the choice for lead actress.

I'm mildly excited, but not more because I'm burned out of those open world style games. I'd much rather play a unique indie game than go through another Ubi style open world game. There's just way too many of them. But the reason I still have some excitement is Ghost was of the highest quality within that genre, so I know it'll at least be good.

Holding my judgment until the July showcase because it feels like we've still barely seen the actual game. Story-wise, I have my concerns, but they've been oddly coy about showing gameplay

There is nothing about the small reveal trailer that indicates that she is hiding herself. She's overlooking a village with a gigantic fire behind her (as if to say, "Here I am!"), and the hat doesn't cover up her face which is clearly butch female. If anything, I would expect a mask to be worn if she was in hiding. You're definitely reaching here.

If this were Insomniac instead of Sucker Punch, I'd be more worried about this kind of thing. But of all games, this one with its time period and location, has no business having any of the stuff that folks are attributing it with. Might as well have aliens in it. But if it does have even a hint of the bullshit we saw in Veilguard then I'll be the first to slam the game and the dev. It would be beyond bizarre and I won't defend it.

Yeah, but the actress isn't playing herself so we nothing to go by at all. Definitely need to flesh this thing out more. I expect they will do a direct on it closer to launch.

They haven't really shown off enough to get super excited about it. If they do an interesting deep dive, opinions may change.

... And this is extremely suspicious. It's too bad that the only thing we know about the protagonist is through the idiot who plays her, which means either of these:

1 - They are terrible at marketing their own character and let soneone else take the spotlight in detriment of the game.

2 - The character has no personality to speak of, it's another cardboard avatar to deliver the message so the actress is the most resembling thing to a human we will get.

If they have written a great relatable character, this is not the way to introduce her.

We're starting to get samurai fatigue. It's been the hip genre for a few years now and, like WW2 games and dudebro cover shooters, people are getting ready to move on.

Tsushima was novel enough for a time when people wanted Assassin's Creed Japan and it did so well that a sequel was guaranteed.

But in the time since then, other games with the same setting have surpassed them in some key ways. Assassin's Creed Shadows is retaining the graphics crown and basically has the exact same structure, while Rise of the Ronin's combat shits on everything.

Add on the anxiety about some of the writers who fucked up Dragon Age joining the team and there is healthy skepticism of this game I'd say.

Why would she be in hiding? The game takes place in 1603 in Hokkaido. Back then it was called Ezochi, translated to "land of the barbarians". It wasn't really considered part of Japan back then. The Edo shogunate took a hands off approach to the island and didn't interfere socially or politically. Especially not in 1603.

Not playing as Jin was a huge blow for me. Also, with it having a female protagonist, it just makes me not even care about the game. I know people say that her politics won't affect the game but It does say a lot about the people working in the studio if that's the type of person they hired to be the main character.
For anyone to say that her sexuality and her preferred politics had no role in her getting the job, considering where the political climate is in game development, is clueless.

They already announced that they're doing a gameplay deep dive in july.

I'm giving sucker punch the benefit of the doubt because they've done nothing to deserve otherwise at this juncture.

I really loved Ghost of Tsushima, played the hell out of it, but after burning out and not finishing AC: Shadows, and seeing as how Yotei just looks like more of the same frojm GoT, I'm just not hyped at all.

As of right now, it's not a day-one buy, but more of a "wait and see if GAF raves about it, then buy it" sort of game, for me.

Same here. I feel they missed the mark with this IP by staying in Japan (I'm personally tired of this setting). It could have been Ghost of.. and like AC, take place in a different region/era.

I loved GoT but to be fair, the combat was kind of weak. I mostly enjoyed it for the scenery and music. It'll likely be the same for GoY.

"Modern Audience" slop aside, I'm really, really burt out on open-world games.

I want a linear, narrative-driven game that isn't E33 (which I hated, despite loving turn-based JRPGs), and one that isn't a Souls-like and contains no modern audience crap.

I know, good luck finding it, right?

I'm with you op. I think the problem is we went from next to no games set in feudal Japan/ancient china to everything having samurai/wuxia.

I'm sure Yotei will be good but there aren't any stand out mechanics or settings when compared to the flurry of similar looking games coming out in the next couple of years.

The gaslighters can gaslight all they want and pretend like literally everything exists in a vacuum (when it supports them of course)

but at the end of the day GoY has shown 0 reason for anyone to be interested other than they took the bad man character away and made it a manly woman.

so we'll see how the state of play shakes out and if the gameplay is exciting and if they shake up the formula and really surprise the player.

but until then its completely understandable to not be excited for "same game but man is man with long hair and boobs" considering that is literally the only thing they have sold us on in the game so far for being different.
