Damn, 15 years later, and we're playing games that are infintely more complex -- at least graphically -- on a handheld with two screens (one touch sensitive), a microphone, and lang range wireless connectivity, all in a package that is smaller than an old NES cart.

Amazing.

now I remember even collecting all those little pink guys too, in the trash cans..

what was up with that!?

The NES is likely responsible for a good number of us being on the forum, as in that's sort of where many of us started. I was just a tad too young for the Atari, I had it but I honestly can't remember playing any games on it. NES I can remember, Adventure Island, Adventures of LoLo, Blaster Master, Castlevania and all that good stuff.

It's also largely why Nintendo remains in business. Sega, Atari, Intellivision, Calico. Nintendo outlasted them, Sega and Atari are still around but not in the way Nintendo is. So Nintendo may sort of qualify as a sacred cow. We don't ever want to see it go away, even me and they sort of lost me to the Genesis back in the day.

Nintendo certainly has a place in most of our hearts.
Actually, Atari died a long time ago. Infogrames just stole, I mean bought their name.

The NES was the first console that I really remember as well. I had a 2600 with a whole bunch of games, including Yar's Revenge and Adventure which I loved dearly, but the hours that I whitled away playing my NES will never be forgotten.

Well to be fair, the NES carts were about 5 times the size needed to be. Didn't you ever get curious as a kid, and open one up? There's a little ROM chip about an inch and a half high. =)

My mom got me the set with the stupid robot, R.O.B. I begged her for it forever and a day, and when it was finally there under the tree on Christmas day, I almost flipped my shit!

You can imagine my youthful frustration with the suck that was Gyromite and R.O.B. the robot. The damn thing had no other real use except for that game for me, and it didn't do what it was supposed to half the time. It was easier to just use two controllers yourself or have someone else play along instead of the damn robot. And to top it off, Gyromite wasn't a very good game. At least I had Duck Hunt, tho.

However, that set didn't come with Super Mario Bros. I played it a couple months later at a friend's place, and when I did I came home and kicked the robot across the living room, and then we blew it to f'ing pieces that summer with fireworks.

And that's why I hate Olimario.

I see. . .it's all beginning to make sense now. . .

I should've done this with my X-Men cartridge :lol

My NES days were the best gaming days of my life. I'll never sell my NES. NEVAR.

I remember the first time I played SMB at a friends house, and was obsessed! I also remember the NES when it first came out. I was in a JCPenny I think, and they had it set up with that weird Gyromite mechanism thing..

The 2nd from the top on the right is NES Open, and the one marked "Jaleco" is Bases Loaded (that always pissed me off).

That was the best... :D

I collected these little toys called Battle Beasts. :lol

I always made them act out sequels to Night of the Living dead.

your story is strikingly similar to that of my best friend at that time (he's passed away too now). we were a few years younger tho. We finished zelda 1 when we were 11 or something. Took us well over a year too :D

Playing those games on my xbox through emulation just doesnt feel the same :/

I don't think in terms of cultural impact anything can touch the NES/Famicom.

It's really the foundation of the modern game market, and where many of today's biggest players made a name for themselves (Nintendo, Square, Konami, Tecmo, Enix, Capcom, Rare, Acclaim, etc.). It's incredible to think if the NES/Famicom did not revive the game market, many of these companies very well may not exist or may have gotten out of the game business.

But beyond that, just what it did for that time, the idea that a video game console could be as common of a household appliance as a VCR was a mind blowing concept for that time.

I also think the explosion of the NES brought forth Japanese culture in a way that previously would be unfathomable. Super Mario really was more popular than Mickey Mouse.

Ah, the Power Pad. Most useless peripheral ever. Did anything other than that track & field came it came with work with the Power Pad? I'm ashamed to admit my cousins and I actually played the hell out of that track & field game, poor as it was. When you're young and games are scarce, you'll play anything and enjoy it.

Agree, this thread is also the reason i think the Gamecube userbase is probably the oldest of them all.

You're kidding, right? Even Nintendo will tell you their userbase skews younger than the other two. I would bet that most gamers in their 20s and 30s that were playing games back then had an NES. Only stands to reason considering how dominant the NES was. Doesn't mean that most of those gamers stuck to Nintendo after the NES or SNES (the sales figures show that). Looking over naz's collection of carts, I think I see why. What was beautiful about the NES (and SNES) was the incredibly massive 3rd party support. EVERY big game was on the NES so you got the best of both worlds: Nintendo's games and everyone else's games as well. That's something the N64 and Gamecube were lacking in. The NES and SNES didn't sell on just the strength of Nintendo's properties, which is pretty much all the Gamecube has going for it nowadays.

NES Bubble Bobble is still the best version, too :)
Wrong. Technically, the Sega Master System version was more advanced and the title of "Best" Bubble Bobble goes to the Sony PSX or Sega Saturn versions. They are ports of the Ultimate version, the Arcade cabinet.

So sadly, no. The NES version is not the best. :(

did u have a game called Section Z? I swear that was one of the hardest game ever.

i LOVE Section Z very much. that and Casltevania are my favorite NES games. a friend and i rented Section Z many years ago and beat it about 2 times. it was one of those "leave the system running for 3 days" deals. no passwords, no saves, hardcore. we memorized that game back to front (it was impossible to beat otherwise :lol).

i finally bought the game about 2 years ago and we got together and beat it again. much much faster this time. but we still remembered most of the paths needed to beat it.

the game is quite beatable. now the Adventures of Bayou Billy on the other hand... i dont think i ever got past the 1st stage on that piece of crap. :lol (that was SNES right?) i wont be buying that game again.

i really love the soundtrack to that game. i copied it to audio cassette. i should go back and make a CD or MD copy of it. still one of my faves.
