Nintendo Downloads - August 2015

I'm in for Pandora's Tower. I didn't get to play it so I'll give it a go.

Didn't the American release of PT have a game breaking glitch? I hope that got fixed for the eShop version.

The glitch isn't game-breaking, just aggravating. If triggered it freezes the game, and you have to reset. There are some odd workarounds, so you just have to grit your teeth a bit in that one section until you can get through it. At least, I'm currently playing through the game right now and that's my experience of it.

If it was fixed I might double dip anyways... >_>

I haven't face this kind of bug before. How do you reset a Wii download game?

I haven't face this kind of bug before. How do you reset a Wii download game?

It's NA only, and you might not run into it. It occurs when you enter one of the
Dawn/Dusk Towers
, and instead of loading it like it should the game just freezes. It doesn't happen to everyone, but is absolutely widespread. We're not sure how exactly the bug is triggered, so some workarounds tend to resemble old "catching Mew in Pokemon RBY" codes. The Pandora's Tower wiki page at least gave me a workaround that's worked for me.

I don't know how to reset a Wii download game as I've never bought one before. (Although I'll be getting Return to Dreamland at some point, since physical copies are still too expensive) I'm playing on a physical Wii disc.

EDIT: Well the answer to the reset question is above me anyways. :)

Pandora Tower is a great game but it isn't VC. Even the eShop doesn't consider it a VC; let alone no save states, no custom controls, no Miiverse. Even the PR doesn't.

So you really haven't paid attention then. :D

I was that guy. Wii DL != VC. That's still factually true and I'll never let that go but NOA does consider Wii games as VC titles now proven by the fact that newly added Wii downloads now have the VC info paragraph on their page on Nintendo.com and also the simple fact that it's the only re-released game on the NA eShop this week, filling that slot.

Just a PSA about Elliot Quest. The latest patch introduced a game stopping bug. It completely freezes up at the start of the final boss fight. Checked Miiverse and it's not just me. It's unfinishable in it's current state.

Normally I'd just assume a new patch was surely on the works but this is an indie game on a Nintendo console so it may be months before it's fixed or maybe it will never be fixed. Buyer beware.

If you're VIRTUALLY playing another CONSOLE game on your Wii U, then it's VC. You're playing a VIRTUAL copy of a game that was originally released on a different CONSOLE.

Hence the term.........or something. Point is, we got a Wii game again, & a good, overlooked one.

Patch is in the works. I've been in touch with them. It's very frustrating. There are several other new bugs. In fact, I think the patch is already submitted and they're hoping it will be out very soon. They caught the bugs *just* before the update w/ stamps etc. released, asked Nintendo to stop the update from being released, but it didn't work out. I think they're at least as upset about this as the rest of us are. It's a real bummer having enemies shoot endless waves of fire at you when it's just supposed to be one fire attack at a time...or the screen shakes as if a Cyclops is constantly pounding the ground...or Elliot runs with the wrong animation. I really feel for the devs, they've been saddled with some really frustrating bugs in trying to better the game.

The dev already posted on Miiverse days ago that the fix was already at Nintendo and just needs to be cleared for release.

Thomas (playeveryware) said:
Fix incoming for critical Desert Bug.

Hello Miiverse community. I am so sorry about the bug that has appeared in the latest update to the game. Even though we thought we did enough testing, this patch ended up adding a critical problem to the game where players cannot get past the Desert area.

Last week we immediately submitted a new patch to Nintendo, however they can be very slow at processing new updates to games. Right now all we can do is wait for Nintendo to make it available to you. I am told we can expect the patch to be released on or around August 19th. Hopefully they do not delay it any further than that.

Again, I want to apologize so much for all the frustration this has caused everyone, and thank you for your patience and understanding. We are always going to continue supporting this game and listening to the players!

Nah, it will be fixed. This isn't the first time they've patched it, even if they seem to introduce new, worse bugs each time, and there's a patch already submitted but I don't think it addresses the bug you mention. I'm sure they'll have another one submitted soon. I'm just a bit tired of the bug-patch-newbug-newpatch cycle they have going on right now. I just want to finish the game. It's even more of a shame since the game is actually pretty damn great.

I'm curious about what do you mean that it might never be fixed because it's an indie game on a Nintendo console. That's just silly. Besides, this is the version that sold the best. Why would you think they will abandon it when they haven't given a single indication that they will?

The Wii U basically has a Wii inside. These are just digital versions of Wii games. If you're going to call those Virtual Console games, then you might as well call every digital version of a Wii U game a VC game as well. Is the Wii mode on Wii U a Virtual Console too? Also, you're not VIRTUALLY playing, you're playing it for REALS!

Technically the Wii games aren't on a virtual machine/emulator. The Wii U just loads the ROM directly into Wii mode, so it's running entirely on real Wii hardware.

Basically the same exact way GBA games work on the 3DS, which is weird they never added more GBA games or re-released the Ambassador games. Also I think the GBA games are considered VC title by Nintendo, despite not really running in a virtual console.

I consider the Wii games VC releases though. I look at the term "Virtual Console" not as a literal name for the technical process, but just as a general brand for any old game released on the Wii U.

Whether Wii games are VC or not, I'm more bothered by this week only getting one game. I had expected "Hardcore Month" to be NoA's way of catching up to Europe, since there's quite a few games they could fit under that title (Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon, Advance Wars 2, Zero Mission, maybe even the Culture Brain Ninja Kid and Flying Warriors games). Now I'm worried we won't see all of those this month, or any time soon. :(

Not technically. :)

It's all first-party games.
Trauama Team & Muramasa weren't first party & they're available in other regions, hence why I said there's still no 3rd party Wii games in the US.

I'm still hoping we could see games like Madworld, No More Heroes, Zack & Wiki, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom (sadly won't happen due to licensing), & such.

Pandora's Tower:

It's an action game in a style that's kinda out of vogue nowadays. Think PS2 action games like Rygar, 3D Castlevanias, etc. The game's levels have fairly complex maps so it could also be considered a Metroid-like, maybe. There's light RPG stuff and item-crafting for armor, different kinds of weapons, etc. It uses the Wiimote pointer really well. There's multiple endings to get but it's not very hard to get a good one.

If that sounds appealing to you, get it. If it doesn't, then at least check a video or someone else's description anyway 'cause I'm terrible at these kind of stuff. The game's really cool, has a great mood, nice music and graphics, and the last couple of towers are fairly challenging. I got pretty into it while playing and had a great time.

So that technically means still no 3rd party support for Wii games on Wii U in the US....
Even if it had been XSEED, it would still be a first party game. Pandora's Tower belongs to Nintendo and Ganbarion; XSEED has no say or claim to any of the game's content.

Just a curiosity: how's Wind-up Knight 2 compared to the mobile version? Here's Unity Games' PR, for those interested.

Tokyo – August 13, 2015 – Unity Games, the game publishing division of Unity Technologies Japan, today announced the release of the popular Wind-up Knight 2 for the Wii U™ system. Originally developed by Robot Invader for Android and iOS, Wind-up Knight 2 has since become one of today’s most popular mobile platform games. The game has been extensively updated and rebalanced for the console experience and is available now on Wii U in the Nintendo eShop for $7.50 USD SRP.
As the game publishing studio behind the Unity engine, Unity Games is directly involved in showcasing the engine’s platform extensibility by identifying exceptional games and introducing them to entirely new gaming audiences on entirely new gaming systems. With Wind-up Knight 2, Unity Games went one step further, by directly managing the game’s transition from iOS and Android to Wii U. The studio curated an internal development team who focused on updating the title and making sure the popular mobile platform game was even more accessible and easy-to-use for Wii U fans. Wind-up Knight 2, represents the first ever Wii U title from Unity Games and the studio’s North American debut as a Nintendo publisher.
“We’re tremendously excited to help bring such a great example of what the Unity engine allows developers to creatively accomplish to an entirely new platform,” said Yukimi Shimura, Strategic Contents Manager and Producer of Unity Games. “Robot Invader’s ability to focus on Wind-up Knight 2’s clever platforming, fantastic character design and beautiful visuals is a testament to Unity making platform dynamics so extensible.”
Wind-up Knight 2 is a clever and highly challenging platform game where players control Sir Sprint, a clockwork knight tasked with completing a host of increasingly diabolical challenges. Armed with a powerful sword and a stout shield the windup knight must double-jump, duck & roll, attack and block his way to victory in a beautifully rendered world filled with humorous hazards and inventive obstacles. Players collect coins, discover secrets, use special abilities, purchase powerful new equipment all in an effort to achieve better rankings and conquer level-specific goals. With more than 40 levels, the new Tournament mode, multitudes of secrets and power-ups, unique stage challenges and much more, Wind-up Knight 2 is guaranteed to offer a near endless amount of whimsical fun and soul-crushing excitement for Wii U.

Nothing this week (Holyday week)

Niraj

I shot people I like more for less.
Sorry, I know nothing about the game and haven't got access to videos.

Pandora's Tower:
-What kind of game is it?
-Should I buy?

The basic premise is this girl gets cursed and is slowly becoming a monster. To remove the curse the main character has to use this chain to get the flesh from the masters of these towers and the girl has to eat the flesh. It's a pretty simple action game where you have to navigate these towers and kill enemies along the way.

The twist is that there is a timer that counts down from the moment you enter the tower, and if you take too long, the girl will transform into a monster. To prevent this, you can leave the tower and feed her the flesh from normal enemies to reset the timer (the higher the quality, the more time you regain). So you kind of have to keep an eye on your timer, since if you let the timer fully run out, you get a game over. If she partially transforms you can still head back and feed her flesh, but it will also affect your affinity with her, which affects your ending. So since you need to keep that in mind, the towers tend to have shortcuts that you can unlock, like ladders and elevators, so you don't have to backtrack as much.

You have a few weapon types that have different strengths and weaknesses, and you also have a chain (which is always equipped) that you can use in various ways. For example, you can shoot it out at enemies to kind of muzzle them, you can grab enemies and swing them around to toss them at walls or other enemies, or you can chain two enemies together (or an enemy to a stationary object) to limit their mobility. You can also charge up the chain to do more damage. The chain also is used to solve puzzles and other things, like pulling levers, swinging on bars, or picking up far away items.

I personally really liked it, but I guess it depends on whether you're interested in that type of game or not.

Why is the Wii Remote important to Pandora?

A large part of the game is aiming the main character's chain at puzzles, transportation, and enemies in combat. This is extremely easy with the Wiimote since the chain will simply fire at wherever you're aiming. It's even better with enemies, since you can latch on to their various body parts to get different effects. This feels very natural with the Wiimote, and less so with a second stick.

Haven't played much of the mobile version (I can't stand 'virtual buttons' in mobile games) but the Wii U version is great so far. Not that it should be too taxing on the hardware but it runs perfectly smooth and looks nice.

If anyone here likes the Bit.Trip Runner games you should definitely give this game a look. The devs even give credit to it as inspiration:

That's not silly, the Steam versions of games are fixed much more quickly than the console versions in general and Nintendo console versions in particular.

Actually, I've been waiting for months for Elliot Quest to work properly before buying it, but now I'm planning to simply buy the Steam version, like for Aban Hawkins.

The two problems I have with patches on Nintendo consoles is:
-On Wii U there is no turning back. So you're stuck with a broken version of a game
-I understand the length of time they take is due to testing but here is the thing where glaringly obvious problems slip through like Hyrule Warriors having loading times more than double and that Nicalis game with completely miss mapped controls I wonder what is the point.

No, I meant XSEED *is* listed as the publisher on the eShop, so their tweet doesn't make sense. Their logo's also in the game startup, by all accounts on the eShop itself XSEED's the publisher of the digital version too and not Nintendo.
