500,000 handheld DS players sold

Nintendo is announcing today that it sold 500,000 of its handheld DS players last week — about 90 percent of the supply available in stores. It also sold 800,000 Game Boy Advance players during that time, setting a one-week sales record for handheld game players. The company said it expects to sell 1 million DS units in North America this year. Last week, it increased its shipment forecast for the DS to 5 million units from 3.5 million units worldwide by the end of March.
Not bad. I bet Nintendo wish they could get more systems to stores...

500k would be half their initial shipment. I bet it sells another 300k-400k in the US in December (since it's really hard to completely sell out of systems). Pretty good for the launch week, I'd say. Now the focus turns to Japan, where we'll see the DS and the PSP going at each other right away. Shall be interesting.

we got 5 in today and they pretty much were gone as soon as we got them in. some guy comes in hes like "you got the ds in stock?" so i said no we dont and hes like "right on!". so i thought that was kind of weird. so he heads to the accessories and picks up a case and the protective sheets, and then he picks up mario and im like "we're sold out of the ds". he had the saddest look on his face. at that moment he was truly a defeated man. :lol

I think it's pretty clear Nintendo DS and PSP will both sell out straight away there, Nintendo DS will have around a million sold by the end of the year there, and PSP will have around half a million, since that's how much they're shipping if i'm not mistaken.

I think that is the case.

Good lord, I completely skimmed that over. 1.3 for the GBA in November? That'd be insane. I wonder how the PS2 is doing. A lot of people want the PSTwo, and they're all we're getting in stock. They're the second fastest selling machines at our store.

We can only hope.
Good job with the US launch anyway, Nintendo.

Launch - check

My real worry is games after launch and the wait for them. I know that there are a nice number coming, but I really hope that more are scheduled in Q1 and 2 that those currently listed on retail sites.

How many hours you working these days ani?

*sigh* Four a week. They keep me on now and then for an extra hour here and there. :\ I'm supposed to be getting more hours next week though. I need to pay for Xmas gifts and gas and college savings and the like.

Everyone was supposed to get more hours three weeks ago when Halo 2 hit, but something was going on with the higher-ups, and they screwed our store. I'm not sure what was going on, but I heard there was some bad blood in management. Hopefully it's resolved now.

Oh, and the pro-Xbox manager working there thought I was an Xbox guy too the last time I worked there.

Well you like KOTOR so you're an xbox guy :)

anyway sucks they give you so few hours you should try to get another job, for example because i an busy with uni i do night fill to get my drinking, food, gaming money. If you did Nightfill it wouldn’t affect you’re current job if you get more hours.

BOMB OF THE YEAR! BOMB OF THE YEAR!

Japanese launch is tonight, I'm sure we're going to hear all about people waiting in lines outside stores and whatnot. Just like the GBA launch. We'll have to see.

From my small little sample of gamestop west town mall, the big sellers this ymonth will be ps2 and the ds.

Tell me about it. 800k GBA in a single week. December is usually their big month. They sold 1.3 million last November, so November's numbers will be pretty interesting (for so many reasons :D)

IT'S A HAND-HELD HOLIDAY AS SHOPPERS SNAP UP 500,000 NINTENDO DS UNITS

Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube Also Post Big Numbers

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 1, 2004 - Shoppers spent Thanksgiving week stuffing their shopping bags with Nintendo hardware, setting the stage for 2004 to be the year of the hand-held holidays. Shoppers snapped up more than 500,000 Nintendo DS™ systems during Thanksgiving week, representing more than 90 percent of all units available in stores across the United States.

With Nintendo DS sales moving faster than anticipated, some locations have reported sellouts, and Nintendo predicts the initial North American supply will be depleted within days. As additional shipments are rushed to stores by this weekend to meet the demand, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America alone by the end of 2004 - a mark that took Apple's iPod 19 months to achieve.

"Consumers have voted the Nintendo DS as the hot item this holiday, so if you see one, you'd better buy it," says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "Nintendo owns the hand-held market, and once again we're the hit of the holiday season."

Nintendo's other hand-held system, Game Boy® Advance, also soared during the holiday weekend. Nintendo sold more than 800,000 Game Boy Advance and Game Boy® Advance SP units during the past week. The combined 1.3 million Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance units sold last week set a new one-week sales record for hand-held systems. And the Game Boy Advance line remains on track to be the best-selling hardware line of the year.

Nintendo GameCube™ also posted impressive numbers. The special bundle of a Nintendo GameCube and a Mario Kart®: Double Dash!!™ game has sold more than 250,000 units since its introduction in mid-November.

Nintendo DS is revolutionizing video games by providing players completely new ways to interact with their games. The sharp, angular, silver-and-black dual-screened system comes with a stylus and features a touch screen, voice control and wireless communication. Nintendo DS, available now at an MSRP of $149.99, represents a third, distinct product line for Nintendo, along with Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo DS comes packaged with both a free, embedded PictoChat™ communication program, and a playable demo of Metroid® Prime Hunters with both single-player and multiplayer modes.

The worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home and portable video game systems. Each year, hundreds of all-new titles for the best-selling Game Boy® Advance SP, Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo GameCube™ systems extend Nintendo's vast game library and continue the tradition of delivering a rich, diverse mix of quality video games for players of all ages. Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.9 billion video games and more than 170 million hardware units globally, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario™ and Donkey Kong® and launching popular culture franchise phenomena such as Metroid®, Zelda™ and Pokémon®. A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Oh great. This just encourages MS to release a PR about how XBL has sold more than HBO.

That's positive if true.

Man that story made me sad.

I'm more excited about the 800,000 GBA sales. What the hell do people do with all those GBAs? That's mind boggling.

And that story Joe, that makes me :) and :( at the same time.

So any predictions for Mario 64 DS sales? 300,000?
I'd say an attachment rate of 50% for the first batch is very reasonable. So as of right now that would be 250,000. 300K is definitely attainable by year-end -- possibly even a little low if 1 million DS's are going to be shipped by Jan. 01.

It's been so long, how well did Mario 64 do for the first few months of the N64 launch?

You're my new hero. "Our forces in retail marketing have won a glorious victory! I am authorized to say that the sales figures we are now reporting may well bring the handheld war within measurable distance of it's end!"

I still don't find it impressive that the DS couldn't sell out in its first week, especially with Black Friday there to boost sales. This thing is gonna stagnate post Xmas.

Why do people use "attach rate" - it shoud be "tie-in ratio" - I find it funny how Babelfished Japanese on Media Create's site has changed the very vocabulary we use to discuss these things.

I blame Iowa.

That was only for the original GBA model though.
I know that. where in the original post did it say anything about which sold what? It says "game boy players" which is a blanket statement for GBASP and the old-style GBA. Even in the Nintendo PR it states:
Nintendo's other hand-held system, Game Boy® Advance, also soared during the holiday weekend. Nintendo sold more than 800,000 Game Boy Advance and Game Boy® Advance SP units during the past week.

For a moment there I had thought it was refering to the Gameboy Player and that people had wised up and finally gotten one. :(

Even if the original GBA model dropped to 40 dollars I doubt it still managed to outsell the SP.

I don't know about everyone else, but I build life-size Gundams out of GBAs.

It'd also be what the GBA sold in November 2003.

Hmm... Y'know, I'm guessing on the NPD hardware ranking Nintendo will have #1, 3, and 5 covered for November. Now if only they were playing a game of Othello or something.

Impressive... ehh, I dunno. They sold about that much in one day last year. If they sold 250K in the half of the month with faster sales and a better bundle, that means the total should be quite under twice that. A good chance of being the GCN's worst November yet. For reference, November 2002: 468K.

I am with Mrbob on this one.... 500k is a nice number, but it is suppose to be the hot item this holiday season according to someone, plus it was the busiest shopping week of the year..... and sold 50% of shipment. A new item like this should have sold out.
