Nintendo DS - 500,000 sold last week

Wow, fanboy craziness. Some of these harsh comments towards the PSP are down right retarded, it's too bad I spent time trying to quiet down MrBob only to see the other side go too far themselves.

The PSP looks down right amazing. Anyone denying that is blind. Why anyone thinks either system will fail is beyond me.

Why don't you just admit you overreacted to my statements and we can all go home happy. :D

If I see a game worthy of owning a DS for, I'll get one. I thought Metroid Prime Hunters would be that game but NST....:(

I did? You said very stupid things and made very pointless comparisons. I don't think I overreacted at all.

PSP cant survive on it's "sexiness" for long. By this time next year there will be video players that make PSP look like a 1980's VCR tape (it sort of does already ).

It's gonna have to build a library of must-have killer aps in a hurry in order to survive.

*yawn*

I have encountered a few people who think it can play DVDs, but I didn't talk to anyone who thinks it's a PS2 in portable form. That aside, I don't think there will be a backlash because it's not Sony who is leading the charge on these perceptions - they state clearly it'll play UMD movies, UMD Games and music. So once consumers get familiar with the product (it still hasn't begun major advertising campaigns in the USA), I think it'll clear up quicker than you think.

Sony might be making it clear, but I don't know if the press in general has really made a big deal about the UMD, and I think it's safe to assume that most people think that what the press says has to come from Sony. If, for whatever reason, they're lead to believe by IGN or whoever, at least in their head, that the PSP plays DVD, and then it doesn't, who's to blame? I'm not saying I think the backlash will completely ruin the system's desirability, but I think some consumers might be surprised.

Yes. The only thing I was talking about in the PR quotes is how funny it is fanboys gobble up PR press releases. You went on some strange parallel rant. If you want to buy me a DS all will be forgiven though..!

You are greatly underestimating the effect the PSP's screen will have on the average buyer.

Imagine the first time people see a screen like this staring at them:

psp16.jpg

People's eyes are going to be opened; watch.

Yeah, they'll be opened in shock at the 250.00 price tag for the unit and the 40.00 to 50.00 price tags for the games for the unit.

Then when they hear about the battery life and consider how they are going to protect that screen from damage, they will realize they have a much better screen for playing their games from Sony.

That screen is 27 inches wide and sits on top of their entertainment center.

I'm sorry you don't think your sales comment near the start of the thread was a little, hmm, far fetched?

I don't think it'll be that widespread. Believe it or not, while consumers are stupid... they're not that stupid.

Ahahaha! :lol :lol :lol

Oh man, bryanbr, why do you even try?

Nope! Post Xmas is the real deal for sales. DS better sell out all million before Xmas. Can the DS sustain sales after the Christmas rush? This is the issue. Oh and I won't even go to comparing it to the virtual boy. I think the DS has already outsold it.

Widescreen >>> Two Screens

Just my opinion. :D

It doesn't cost $250. It might not even cost $200. It will cost no more than $50 more than the DS, yet it will be an order of magnitude higher as far as aesthetics and performance. Stop with the bullshit.

What I'm say is, you wonder why you get called a troll when you make comments such as those. Look at how you put it. I don't see how you don't find that to be trolling. Regardless, this is a useless argument. Continuing enjoying whatever fun you have, it doesn't dampen my day any.

why is mrbob trying to troll every damn positive nintendo thread. He tried to downplay some positive impressions from RE4, finding negative things to say about DS etc. Why is it so fun?

This thread sucks.
Nah, it had a good opening, but the story arc was just retarded. I'm willing to bet that the ending is gonna be lame because of it. Multiplayer action was good though.

Indeed it does.

The DS is supposed to be the hawt item of Xmas 2004. How can a virtual sell out not be expected? It's a brand new piece of hardware released in peak shopping season of the year from the "Number one name in portable gaming", why is it a surprise to not expect a virtual sell out? But I'll let you guys get back to your cheerleading.

:lol Yes I know I never should have admitted I'm buying RE4 for the GC right away. :(

NDS trolls need to put their act together.

So what is it? A catastrophy of Virtual Boy proportions like some where claiming a few months ago? A gimmicky N64 in disguise that consummers will never buy? Kiddy? Will be overshadowed once PSP comes out?

I for one think this products will coexist because they are attractive to different consumers for different reasons.

edit* WOW SPIKE, SEEMS WE AGREE :D

Can we got out sometime? I'd love to! In other words, I totally agree. I'm not seeing any reason why either will not be successful.

I'm glad to see others agree with me. All this "one will fail, the other will succeed" crap is just nonsense. All three can (and will) be successful -- there is plenty of room for all.

with these sales numbers, I think it's been updgraded to "next Dreamcast" status.

Ok, heh, that made me smile. I can imagine Sonybots going... "Shit, abandon the Virtual Boy stance. Move the notch up! The Nintendo DS is now the next Dreamcast! NBOTS AM CRY!"

Yeah, pretty soon they'll be calling it a failure because it didn't sell the GBA's lifetime installed base during it's first holliday season :lol

There, this thread is now complete.

Virtual Boy - > Dreamcast -> ?

Genesis (Close, but lost in the end?)
Master System (Good contender, never considered past that)
Nuon?
Saturn?

Oh, and since this thread is polluted with PSP pic's anyway, here's some funny info. I was watching The Screen Savers yesterday, and Kevin Perera (or whatever the new host's name is) was talking about a conversation they had with a guy from Sony regarding the PSP. He said he was told that because they thought that the PSP would be a hit this holliday, that they were going to limit the number of units shipped (in Japan I guess).

Kevin was all like (paraphrased) 'So because they think that it's going to be a hit they're going to limit the number of units available? Sounds like they don't have alot of confidence. Sounds like another PSX to me...'

His words, not mine :)

What do you expect? They're losing money on it in the short term.

Instead of talking out of your ass about the DS sales you should have said the last two quotes from your post right in the beginning.......

seriously, the screen is sexy, but where are the games ?

Woah. I'm not surprised that the DS sold 500k, but holy shit at the GBA selling 800k

Heh, just a bunch of PS2 franchise extensions as you said above.

The irony of someone arguing for Nintendo's innovation and against franchise extensions is a beautiful thing to behold.

Meanwhile, here's why folks will be interested in buying the PSP. It's not because of the games. It's not because of the screen. Simply put:

this thread is gold - does anyone else talk more sense than amirox?
how can anyone deny the appeal of the psp? it's the first time a portable gaming device hasn't looked like a toy, it has the powerful playstation brand behind it, sony's talent for turning people into hysterical screaming hordes, and that screen..

don't get me wrong, i'm sitting here with sore eyes and crippled hands from playing my ds for about three hours non stop - but i want this thing NOW :D

Wow. A lot of people in this thread are going to be banned in a few minutes.

edit: Actually, no, I'll just make an example out of one person in an effort to put these type of threads back on track.

Mr Bob gets 2 weeks. Next time I see someone post like he did in this thread, it'll be upped to 2 months.

Don't do it.

And don't think I won't forget this when the PSP launches. I shouldn't want to avoid threads with big news and multiple pages in an attempt to avoid a roll eye'd induced migraine from you stupid kids with console alliances.
