Nintendo DS - 500,000 sold last week

Wow. A lot of people in this thread are going to be banned in a few minutes.

edit: Actually, no, I'll just make an example out of one person in an effort to put these type of threads back on track.

Mr Bob gets 2 weeks. Next time I see someone post like he did in this thread, it'll be upped to 2 months.

Don't do it.

And don't think I won't forget this when the PSP launches. I shouldn't want to avoid threads with big news and multiple pages in an attempt to avoid a roll eye'd induced migraine from you stupid kids with console alliances.

HOLY shit! There is a god! 4 pages of his psycho babbling....

what a load of crap this thread is. The DS is gonna be a huge success, frankly it already is. In all likelyhood is will be such a big success that it will replace the Gameboy line (whatever the hell crap nintendo says about third pillars right now is just that, crap. a line used to cover their asses in case DS wasn't a success).

And the PSP will be a success too. To early to tell how much of a success, but a very least a modest success, like Game Gear.

And I for one want both to be a success, because competition is what will give us the great games, instead of the shovelware that makes up the majority of the GBA library. I do not want PSP to take the LEAD, (and I don't think it will), because the market NEEDS a strong Nintendo, or it will seriously suffer, Nintendo adds a key ingredient to the marketplace, that even Sony fanboys might discover they are sad to lose. Nintendo has already been marginalized to some degree in the console world, they need to maitnain control of the handheld relm. (Though I think they might surprise us with revolution).

If the DS can keep a rapid clip of sales going until the PSP launch, it should be safe. It's the fancier graphics of the PSP that would cause damage...I can't really see what other aspects would turn the "casual gamer".

There will also be the faithful renditions of popular PS franchises to worry about...

Didn't read the responces to this topic but here's my take:

I'm sure Nintendo's happy. 500K is a great amount. IMO a bit underwhelming but definitely proves the DS has a bit of chance at surviving. It's dissapointing IMO because Launch + Biggest sales day of they year equalled only 500K units. There have been handhelds and consoles launching at odder times of the year and yet sold more than the DS did in their launch days, minus the biggest day of the year. Nintendo should have shipped more.

But it still shows some great strength for the DS. Don't get me wrong.

2 weeks. Ouch. My almost 1 week ban was long enough. Well.. GAF might tone down to a normal decent level where gaming discussion isn't alway about slinging mud if the mods no longer allow all-out trolling. I felt that the last 2 weeks of anti-Nintendo furore got a bit out of hand even for GAF. Even thread and remotely Nintendo related post was trolled to kingdom come.

half a million DSs? That's excellent news, I guess. I want it now mostly for the GBA playback because of the excellent screen display.

Now about my gripe that there is only 1 Nintendo title in 3 months of DS launch.... that has yet to be remedied and will need some time to clear. I'll be picking one up only when there are titles I want (although FTM is calling and GBA playback).

If you want to justify a purchase now you could import wario, as it came out today.

Well as has been mentioned ad nauseum, it's 500K out of about 550K shipped. So it's not like they only sold 500K, with an unlimited pool of units (or even the million some people mistakenly thought was shipped at launch).

And just a small point , but Black Friday is not actually the biggest sales day of the year. The biggest sales day is usually the Saturday before Christmas or Dec. 23. Black Friday usually ranks between 5th and 10th.

i am waiting with the DS. I am planning to buy one in january.

I have to say.. the DS is probably the best gaming purchase I've made all year. I love the GBA:SP, probably 70% of my gaming time is spend on the 2D goodness the system offers. I was very skeptical about the DS, but after hearing reports of how good GBA games looked on it, I decided not to wait and purchased the system. And it is GORGEOUS. I will never go back. I hope no GBA fan overlooks it because of the haters. Oh and Mario DS is fun ;)

As for the PSP, it certainly is a promising system. Mesmerizing obviously to a lot of board members. I'll pick it up in a year when the library is solid, and the reliability issues are out in the open. I really don't see the appeal in arguing over it. More good games don't hurt anything but our wallets.

Aye, our wallets.

AND OUR PRIDE!

I really need to pick up a DS :(

I finally got the chance to play Mario 64 DS the other day and I fell in love with that game for the second time. I'll probably pick it up for Christmas since it's impossible to find it in my area.

I think Nintendo's scheme might actually end up working here. DS really isn't a seperate third pillar, but with consumers still buying hordes of GBA SPs it's basically worked out like this, the DS is to Nintendo what the "Acura" line is to Honda ... a more upscale product that lets them dip into a slightly higher end market.

I really think at $79.99, with superior battery life (4x the PSP), ideal pocket size, and a huge library of games, the GBA SP can be viable for another year or maybe even 2-3 more years really. Especailly if they bring GBA SP software prices down to $19.99 a pop.

There might even be one more hardware iteration of the GBA line itself, maybe even slightly slimmer with a better screen and wireless support built in.

I see DS going to $99 next spring though to give Nintendo some breathing room between it and the PSP.
