Nintendo Switch 2 sweeps its debut with 108,000 consoles sold in Spain, doubling the previous record held by PSP

According to Gamereactor, Spanish gamers have taken home 108,000 Nintendo Switch 2 consoles since Thursday and during the first weekend, a spectacular and unprecedented figure that speaks volumes about Nintendo's work with the Switch and the machine's popularity as a console for more than just playing its own games.

Mario Kart World is now the best-selling game of 2025.

The strategy of including Mario Kart World in a bundle, which the Spanish public overwhelmingly chose, also paid off. Nearly 90,000 machines had the card with the eShop download code, while another 5,000 people took home the (very expensive) red box of the physical game. In total, nearly 95,000 units made it the best-selling game of 2025 in Spain, surpassed only by EA FC 25... if all formats are combined.

Nintendo Switch 2 doubles the PlayStation 5's size at launch in Spain

The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 marks a milestone never seen before in Spain. Some had predicted an already ambitious range of 40,000-60,000 units to approach or beat previous records, but reality has shattered even the most optimistic predictions. In fact, the Nintendo Switch 2 has not only surpassed but doubled the PlayStation Portable's record , and even more so the relatively recent PS5.

Nintendo Switch 2 also dwarfs successful predecessors such as the first Nintendo Switch in 2017 or the Wii in 2006, its only two home machines that would end up surpassing the magic number of 100 million worldwide.

Top selling launch consoles (units)

  1. Nintendo Switch 2 - 108,000
  2. PSP - 54,000
  3. PS5 - 48,000
  4. Nintendo Switch - 45,000
  5. PS4 - 38,000
  6. PS3 - 35,000

  8. Nintendo 3DS - 19,000

No wonder, I mean, look at this chart! All of them are old tech!

/s Great start!

Incredible numbers, I do however think that if the PS5 hadn't had such a constrained launch due to pandemic/stock etc the units sold would have been in the same ballpark or even bigger than the Switch 2. Also mention that in Spain the "comuniones" are celebrated in May/June so the Switch 2 made for a really good gift for kids in the 9-10 age bracket.

MKW is great. Very fun tracks, and you want to go back and explore them more. The water levels are really amazing, feels like they should make wave race DLC.

Mentioning the difficulties PS5 launched with when making comparisons? Pfft.

Maybe Snoy could have delayed the launch until they actually had enough units to supply?

Its very fitting that Nintendo is sweeping all before it. Sony is a jack of all trades, Microsoft is a software developer, Nintendo has pedigree that they'll never have.

The direct Nintendo sales are not included in the UK and Spain numbers 😳… Incoming massive sales numbers from Nintendo PR.

Now if they only were still acting like a pimp with their third party quality control. Would be such a killer combo with the inevitable insane third party support these sales numbers will generate.

this console matched first month ps5 sales in a single day

shaping up to be the most successful console in history

TBF PS5 was supply-constrained and Switch 2 doesn't seem to be at all.

Which I guess makes sense, given Switch 2 was finished by late 2023 and Nintendo just sat on it for a year or so. Lots of time to build up stock.

Yeah apparently Nintendo are being very picky about which 3P they are providing early support to. I understand to some degree, especially when a new system is just launching. Also I guess Nintendo assume the smaller 3P will onboard in time; it's the big 3P who held out with Switch they would want to try getting onboard, and even among them I'm sure they have their preferred partners. Square-Enix, for example, and I suppose CDPR as well (tho both of them did support the Switch fairly well).

Hopefully they start opening things up to more 3P to easily get games on the platform sooner vs. later.

Spain has a great taste, unlike UK
The UK Sold > 160K at launch, that's more units than Spain. However that amount wasn't enough to get the record of PS4 (250K). The Switch 2 was still a huge success in the UK and it easily beat Nintendo's previous best launch of 3DS (113K).

That number doesn't include the direct sales from Nintendo.

The Circle Jerking over the success of this thing on launch day is hilarious. Some are even worshiping the high price tags. There was little question it was going to sell well at launch. I think nobody denied that. After the fanboys have had their fill, I just still wonder if the mass consumers are going to adopt this. I still haven't found one reason a game like the new Mario Kart is $80. If I as a gaming fan cannot see this, the mass consumer may see this as well. Biting your nose to spite your face. Good luck with that.

Unrelated. But i love Spain and plan to retire there one day.
A country full of great taste.
Great. Another expat rising the cost of living.

I'd normally reprehend such behaviour since buying Nintendo is wrong except when I do it. But whatever, since it's my country:

That's half a million units sold just between the UK, France, and Spain.

Those rumours of 3 million sold on the first day came from a garbage source, but they may have some merit to them if this keeps up
