Nintendo Switch AC adapter is an old-fasioned "wall wart"

I really hope the Switch ac adapter isn't as big as it looks on the box. I don't like the ones that take up 3 outlets on a power strip.

Couldn't they have made an in-line power brick style ala Wii U? Or even better, a laptop style adapter:

I'd certainly be interested to know which existing, cheaper USB-C power bricks are safely compatible (I'm told I shouldn't trust that all of them would be), as I am in the market for a second one to take along with the handheld without disconnecting my dock.

But in the 90s they had a brilliant solution on the N64 by putting the "wall wart" bulge as the part that plugs into the console.

That's true but can you transform an USB-C cable into that? Wall bricks really suck, but yeah it's better to only get it fried than the entire dock I guess. (Though is the dock that demanding to need one at all...?)

There goes two ports on my power strip lol

We save the very last port for these behemots so they can have a little bit of fresh air without bothering anyone

For anybody considering buying a third party adapter just remember it needs to be compatible with USB PD and have at least 40 watts. Stay away from cheap cables and wall adapters or you could fry your system.

Why wouldn't you...? It's a generic USB-C port....

First, it needs to send enough power. USB-C chargers made for phones probably won't have enough juice, you'll need one designed for tablets of laptops.

Second, USB-C is still a new standard and there are a ton of non-standards compliant cables and chargers out there that can actually fry devices. So you need to be sure about what you are buying or you might end up with something like this.

The power adapter is obviously "one piece" to allow better adapter portability compared to laptops (relatively big anyway and more and more being intended for tech-conscious audience) and regular bricks. See: 3DS charger. Phones to lesser extent as these tend to be smaller and smaller.

You could easily convert it to an in-line with a regular power extender though, no?

Assuming there are no heat issues, this indeed sounds like a better idea. They could even form it so that it becomes a charging stand on the go.

I don't get it. Why don't you just put it in the outlet at the bottom? Or just turn it upside down at the top?

eh once its plugged in who gives a rats ass, it looks like this adapter has same size prongs so you can put it at the first or last outlet of your power strip and it shouldn't take up an other spots.

Question: I'm buying Switch from France (to Croatia), those two countries should have the same two-point AC adapter/power? Meaning I don't have to worry about extra adapters or anything, just plug and juice? Whoever can answer this, thanks in advance!

Isn't this just the extra charger? I could've sworn the dock holds the power brick.

Yes, as far as I know you can charge it while docked.Which is what I'm going to do most of the time.

And N64s used to get hot as hell as a result.

Although, we did keep ours on the carpet floor and I now realize 20 years later that that's not the best of ideas for numerous reasons :p

In line power bricks can die, I'm glad the Switch isn't using one.
I've never had that happen. I'd rather live with the possible worry I might have to replace my AC adapter than have to use a wall wart in 2017. It's bad enough I have 6 external HDDs that all have wall warts. Fortunately a couple have the sideways narrow kinds but the rest are all stupid outlet covering boxes. Fuck. It's 2017. Fuck these things.

Why? They are way more flexible for plugging things in. I'm already plugging over 18 things in. Having to deal with a brick at the outlet fo plug all of those in would be a giant pain in the ass and probably not doable in my setup. In line power bricks are superior.
Looks about the same size as my cellphone charger.

But it's the Switch and Nintendo, let's have an outrage!
What kind of giant ass cell phone charger are you using? I haven't had one that big in over a decade.

AVGN criticized this kind of power brick design as far back as 2007.

It is THE CURRENT YEAR and this shit still continues. It is not acceptable.

I like how people in here are going BUBUBUB USB-C!

That doesn't help me if I'm trying to use the dock so that I can play on my TV. Really no reason for this crap in this day and age. The only bright side of this design is that everyone else stopped fucking doing it so I can put this on a 'bottom' outlet and just let the rest exist normally.

Sorry mate, but even Apple has the same big thing on the wall. It's called USB-C Charger. You can use this for Switch.

The real problem isn't that it has a power brick the issue is that it's on the end of the cable where you plug it in instead of the middle of the cable. When it's on the end it can prevent you from plugging in stuff to other nearby power plug ins.
