No fucks given: Black man continues to eat oatmeal as cop repeatedly knocks on window

but when a cop pulls you over and asks for an ID, do you tell him no?
The one time I've ever had a cop pull me over, the conversation started with the cop telling me how fast I'd been going and what the speed limit was.

If I'm just sitting around and a cop walks up and asks for my ID without being able to tell me what the matter is? What the hell?

Nothing this man did in the video makes him worthy of getting his ass beat. The fact that you (and everyone else who knows anything about US law enforcement) are afraid of getting your ass beat (or getting killed) for behaving like this man did in the video says a lot about the current issues with US law enforcement.

have you not been paying attention? he's Black and breathing.

Illegal to eat anything in a car at night in a parked car?

I was hoping it was this guy...

yep cops pulled up on me when I was sitting in a parking lot a couple of times. Shined their flashlight up in my bag of doritos and everything.

I mean when you survive the cops you're just glad they're gone, but later on you start thinking about how fucked up it was they singled you out, and you were literally doing not a damned thing to warrant their attention except fucking exist. 2 cop cars can surround me, shine their flashlights all throughout my car looking for "something", and then asking me what is wrong.

Fuck cops.

guess how close i am to the cops, pretty damned close, and I still say fuck cops. Be a good cop that's a part of a fucked up system and pretend you're not contributing to the problem, brehs. before they even come at me.

nope. so it seems ive lit a fire. so let me ask this, do all of you who quoted me deny every request a cop makes every time you have come in contact with one? maybe not to extent of the dude in the video, but when a cop pulls you over and asks for an ID, do you tell him no? just for the sake of not violating your rights? I must have skipped the part in life where everyone else was taught to not talk to the police because fuck them. i understand that they are under the spotlight due to recent events, but whats also seemed to surface a lot more is people behind a camera acting like assholes in front of police. maybe its just me, but whenever i come in contact with police i act like a normal person. and my skin is brown, for whatever thats worth because judging by some of the posts here it seems like that is one of justifications for videos like this.

+1

Though IMO both parties were acting like assholes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally playing around. And even though I found this video funny, it's definitely not something I would ever recommend someone else attempt. He was very fortunate things didn't get out of hand in a hurry. And obviously due to the recent spotlight on officers going way too far, I admit to not minding so much seeing someone give them a hard time from time to time and using the camera on their phones as a way to protect themselves.

you skin is brown, cool.
This is america. so are you black?

When the cop is radioing dispatch trying to make the dude sound more dangerous than he really was.

"He's probably armed"

Fuck you, dickhead cop

well, if your answer to the question "do you have firearms in the car" is "plenty", its your own fault.

sarcasm or not. (no officer is obliged to know when you are using sarcasm and when not)

and just to even flick of all in here a lil bit more. if an officer in my state asks for an id, i have to show it. even if i have done nothing or he has no suspicion.

to problem isn't that this is intrusive.
the problem is that it happens to often to minorities.

soooo, having no cops will solve all of the problems? is that what you are trying to say?
change the system, but cops are kinda needed.

edit: sry for doublpost, little brainfart on my side.

yep ur adding a lot of what wasn't written there in some kind of assumptive, inferential asspull, but that's forgiven. It's cool.

I'm just saying cops can go get fucked. cops are exactly "kinda" needed. We just have a feeling that they're necessary because otherwise criminals would tear everything apart and there wouldn't be any kind of order anywhere.

(tell you wat though, it probably would solve our problem with police racism, police violence, police abuse of authority, militarization of police, the us vs them mentality of police, and so on, so maybe you're right, at least some of the problems would be solved if there were NO police. )

This segment here is why I struggle with the whole black community / police relations thing. Can someone tell me why it is so bad that it seems to have degenerated into a complete stalemate?

There is no explanation because there is no stalemate. To assume a stalemate is to assume both parties are on equal ground. The police have been terrorizing black people since they were first around during slavery. You only see more of it now because of video recording and social media. They can't hide the shit anymore and the media loves this shit too. That still doesn't mean anything is going to change though.

Annoying cop and I would be mad too but I can't understand most of the comments here either. Just getting rid of police would solve a lot of problems? You think racism will disappear then and violence against minorities will vanish? And I hope nobody saying this has to rely on police in the future. I don't have any specific solution to this problem but I guess demonizing every police officer (and there are certainly also good police officers) won't do the job. It's good that the media is so awarevif this problem but it shouldn't result in a war between police and citizens.

but the war isn't the result, it's the cause of the things you listed before mentioning the war.

No, he was definitely armed. He mentions his concealed carry permit, pretty sure there was a gun between his seat and center console, police asks him if he has a firearm on him and he responds with "plenty", and at the end of the video he say something like "best believe (?) was on me, you already wondering, yeah it's on me, in my pocket" and I think he was referring to his gun.

All within his rights, mind you

yep, i have. so the logical response to situations like that is to increase your chances of getting your ass beat by being non-cooperative?

Are you even listening to yourself? What you are saying is that you cooperate with an illegal stop and orders from the police because you are afraid of getting your ass beaten and possibly killed. Do you not understand that, that is exactly the problem?

Who is saying get rid of police? I think most people here and in the US want better cops, because quite a few of them are absolutely terrible.

Might be one of the reasons why this guy didn't get pulled out of his car. Police officers don't like having their authority challenged, but they don't want to get into a shootout if they can help it either.

Not siding with the cop, but, isnt it illegal to sleep in your car in random parking lots?

Isnt that reason alone to ask this guy to at least prove that he is staying in the hotel?

Stupid MFer wouldn't have had to worry about a confrontation at all if he just minded his own damn business.

If its illegal, the police officer would know that law, and arrest him because of it, or detain him because of it. The police officer did nothing but make a jackass of himself, because there was no laws being broken to arrest or detain. Could easily look at the license plate, which all managers take down when you arrive, could easily do a lot to solve the oh-so-important-crime of finding out where this blackman belongs. So either the officer is as confused as you are about law, and shouldn't have a lethal weapon on him, or it was bullshit harassment, that black people are all familiar with.

Knowing that if he was a white guy in a suit, based on my life experience, it wouldn't be a problem, its harassment.

Police are owed fucking nothing without probable cause. In many states, they're not even owed an ID. If a police comes over to you and starts asking questions, there's all numbers of reasons not to comply - because police brutality is fucking rampant, because they can lie and say you did something you did not (happens all the time), because they can be trying to get information on you for something they're investigating that you have nothing to do with.

You live in some fairytale world where police are all altruistic individuals that are always trying to do right, and that a person complying with their nonsense requests just helps them do their job.

Bullshit.

If a police doesn't have just cause, you're damn right I'm going to ignore their request. And I'm not even black. Being black there's like a billion times more reason to ignore them.

It's not "acting like an asshole" to record your encounter with police; it's fucking protecting yourself from potential lies the police try to throw your way about the encounter with them. It's to protect yourself from any excess force, from any breaking of the law from the police themselves. In this day and age, if you're black and you encounter police, you better have your phone recording or hope to God someone else is recording the encounter. There is literally endless examples of police lying about an encounter with a regular individual only to have them be exposed by cellphone video.

You need to get past the nonsense you've been taught that police are supposed to be complied with at all times. Police in this country have been at the forefront of enforcing every fucked up law this country ever passed, have led the way in killing innocent citizens. When lynchings were common in the South, police often stood by and watched or participated. During the slavery era, they not only helped catch fugitive slaves but they often made shit up just to arrest black folk (which they still do today).

Yes, I'm sure you don't need a history lesson - but that's the reality. Police do not inherently deserve respect. They need to earn it. Some police officer walking up to your car to harass you while you eat oatmeal is not something deserving of respect.

Notice the cop didn't step it up, why? Because he was out of his jurisdiction. The man didn't commit a crime or do anything wrong, they where just nosy or looking to fill their quota. They messed with a guy who didn't have any issues and didn't want to put up with that profiling bullshit.

Most people might hand the offer an ID and none of this might have happened, but if denying an officer of that is against the law, then the police should have called for back up. The man was not threatening at all, like he said, he was just eating his fucking oatmeal.

The problem is, many police feel their title means something that people need to submit too.. Unless they are called or have a reason to use the powers they have, then they can't ask anything more out of a civilian than another civilian can, they can't order someone around just because they are police. There's rules, laws and polices for these types of engagements. If the man had broken any laws, he would have been dealt with, and with pleasure apparently.

It's kind of like this photo below... The law is the glass, maybe this is why people are calling him an asshole, cause it appears he is taunting the police. Yet he didn't do anything wrong, so all the police can do is observe.

but not knowing the law IS a valid excuse... if you're a cop.

just ask the supreme court.

It's Virginia. No idea what the rule is here regarding parking lots.

There's no stop-and-identify laws in Virginia. He was in the clear.

Who said anything about getting rid of cops? There's a wide gulf between that and "You have to do everything a police officer says."
