No Man's Sky |OT| Hello Worlds.

Yesterday i was ready to pre-order the game, but now i'm not so sure. It seems that for every positive reaction, there's also an negative one. Fans of the game claim there are many different planets and describe an addictive gameplay loop, while the skeptics describe a game with a lot of planets that look a like, with gameplay that gets boring really fast.

I've waited al long time for this game and I know that if this was €30,- game i would've bought it by now. But the €60,- price tag is making me hesitant. It doesn't help that all the first impression pieces i've read on sites like gamespot don't really tell me anything new.

I guess i'm still waiting for someone to convince me what makes this game worth it.

Value is subjective, no-one is going to be able to convince you.

The game is as described for the most part (player meetings pending). I think if you thought the game looked good in the run up to release, then you will enjoy it.

For me it's a pretty amazing, awe inspiring game. There have been a lot of comparisons but it's a really weird, unique game.

Sean wasn't kidding when he called it niche. The fact it's getting all this attention is amazing to me because it shouldn't have broad appeal. That's why it's so divisive, not because it's not a good, well realised experience, but because some people just don't dig it.

Trust your gut feeling on this, a lot of the experience hinges on how much you're willing to invest in it. If you're sceptical from the start, it could be a struggle.

Quick question;

How much of your time playing this game is spent in space? As in, how organic is the sense of discovering new planets, locations, systems or ships?

Do you spend a decent amount of time in space and come across new stuff on the fly, or does the game essentially railroad you into the "next" system along via a quick travel lightspeed type system?

As much or as little as you want. You aren't railroaded into anything. There is some tutorial stuff you need to get through, then you do what you want.

On another note still on my original ship (sucks in battle). Though my multi tool has been upgraded several times. Suit has had 2 extra slots thanks to some lovely kind alien type.

Still have planets to land on in my starting system.

Someone spoil it for me. What happens when you reach the center of the Galaxy?

Peter Molyneux greets you with a message saying you are now the God of the universe and can tinker with the code. But it turns out to be all fake, so you can expect Eurogamer or Polygon doing an interview with you about it in a few years

He went on to say yes when asked if you could grief other players in game...Nothing unlcear about the question or answer IMO. If he did say yes because the feature is intended down the road, he should have said that. All of Seans answers to questions like this have been intentionally vague and thats why he has been asked in several different ways.... (ways like "are you able to play with friends")... because he has consistently failed to have any clear answer to these types of questions, they always include the universe being so big and the chances being so unlikely...perhaps the feature itself does not exist...who knows at this point, because he continues to refuse to provide any clear answer.

I'm not having this conversation in this thread anymore tbf. That's what that other dumpster fire of a thread is for.

I was just calling you out on the video in which the interviewer set a game where he was able to ask Sean 20 or so questions and he could only say yes or no. Thus not being able to elaborate, or say maybe. That's all.

Cool!

I redeemed the Pre-Order ship immediately and didn't get stuck. The tutorial mission resumed once I bought a ship without a hyper drive. When you have the new ship, use your scanner in space and a marker should pop up directing you to an alien who will give your the first ingredient.
That's the thing, the tutorial did not resume and no marker popped up.

Very well said. And for anyone else on the edge of purchasing. Heed this advice. The game isn't for everyone.

You're right about value being subjective. And to quote Fox Mulder: I want to believe. I consider myself an optimist, not a sceptic. It's just... all the reactions are so contradicting. There seems to be no consensus about anything (like the planet variety).

Two random questions that have probably been covered a million times but this thread jumps big every time I go afk...

Am I dumb for selling all "unique" items at the start - things that don't stack, artifacts, etc. I seem to be piling up credits fast which is nice, and don't really have the upgraded storage to even build the blueprints I'm finding.

Is there an incentive to 100% every planet in a system, for example your starting system? Besides having fun (which it totally is) - I was missing a few species on my very first planet and I will probably try to 100% my whole starter system which is only 4 planets, just wondering if there's an acknowledgement of it being finished inside the game besides telling yourself "great job". Slightly related is there a way to tell how many points of interest you are missing on a planet besides dumping override chips (spelling wrong?) into the beacon scanner orange rays of insight? I noticed on the menu a spot for 5 or 6 (forget exact layout) "points of interest" that I found and uploaded. Then I found another one that took the place of one already filled in. Can it just keep going and you'd not know?

Thanks & have fun all explorers!

Out in space there are space stations, asteroids, and other secret stuff I won't spoil. But you can travel between planets and moons using your pulse drive and also do a bit of combat (if you want to dogfight lots, just pick up valuable cargo and go into space) You'll quickly get scanned by pirates.

The planets are where the main bulk of exploration is. But for me I probably spen about 2/3 of my time on planets, the remainder being in space and the menus lol

What resources are the best to sell to get most $$$?
All I have now is about 300K but a ship with slots enough for me is at least a million in cost :/

100% agreed. I definitely get why some people aren't into the game and I'm sort of on the fence myself, but it's a really unique game and I'm happy it exists.

Something weird happened. I named a moon I was on a lot something. I don't know if I went to a different place, but I realize I'm on "Poop", because the player who discovered this is very mature. I visited another planet called Balls. I reported both, but now they're gone from the system. It's super frustrating, because they were both planets I could farm items worth 40k at.

Planet variety is a hard one. Because you could just be extremeley unlucky and come across 5 star systems with barren planets, yet another player could come across 5 star systems lush with life. It's how the universe works.

So I just started the game and ended up on a planet with gold and rare elements/minerals literally everywhere. :o
Got 500k credits in minutes but decided to stop as I figured it'd break the game somewhat if I got millions upon millions just from the starting planet.

Amazing game so far though, love every minute of it.

harvest the shit out of it! You'll need it for new ships!

Griefing other players means you can indeed leave marks on worlds discovered by them (mining an element entirely, killing an entire species...). You could also, with enough firepower and time, possibly destroy permanently (afaik) a space station a player uses for trade, which would also count as "griefing".
NEVER was the game alluded to having player to player combat/ kill.

It was said before but bears repeating.

NMS is not, and never was, a Multiplayer game. (not in the sense people intend).

Posting a gif repeatedly where Sean was boxed into only answering Yes or No only to questions without context is disingenuous at best imo.

It's the nature of the beast. No experience is the same.

My first hour for example was arriving on the second planet and finding a massive structure that no-one else in the thread had seen. It blew my mind enough that I had to stop playing and show people. Part of that is my own imagination, I imagined what this thing was. The reality is it's just some algorithm spitting shit out (like the detractors say), but it inspired a feeling inside of me.

Another's persons first hour could be a frustrating slog finding resources and being confused about where to go.

Even with structured games people's perception of an experience can vary wildly (see Uncharted). Now give everyone different environments, weather, planets, wildlife, ships, resources, enemy AI, points of interest, lore, language. Consensus is almost impossible to reach.

There's nothing wrong with being sceptical by the way, I didn't mean it as an insult.

Stripmine that sucker, you will be glad you did.

If you were really so optimistic you would only consider the positive impressions, don't you think?

That's the thing, the tutorial did not resume and no marker popped up.

How many planets in your starting system? Did you scan the space around each one and look carefully for markers?

Also some people have gotten stuck because they hadn't left the planet first which is step 1 of the tutorial. Hopefully they patch this soon, through.

I have the same questions!

Welp, just had my first game crash. Luckily I had just landed at an outpost and the game saved, haha

Edit: Well shit, the game just crashed in the exact same spot. When I try to unlock a new multi-tool upgrade from an outpost building, it keeps crashing :/

Edit 2: Third crash in the same spot. Definitely bugged!

So I think reporting hides it, too, which is silly. I just don't think the planet should be named Poop. I can't unhide it, so I can't go back. Something must've happened with the unreliable online services that overwrote what I had named it. The solar systems of this game are kind of cheats. I don't get the reason to do that. Implement a solar system map like in EVE Online and let us see where we are. EVE also has way too many systems to handle, and it works there because some systems carry more importance than others. They start to feel like home. I'm afraid NMS doesn't do that. Feeling lost in space is daunting.

Holy cow, 55 pages on the "cant see other players" thread. I never thought we could see other players, or really wanted to for that matter.
Yeah. I don't get it.

They did say you can't see yourself but others can and you can see them but on launch day I don't expect anything to work properly.

I'll give them the benefit of doubt but the shitflinging is reaching comical levels.

Played for 10 mins this morning before work. I walked around, mined some iron before being moved along by some robots. I can tell this game is super atmospheric already.

Ugh, can't believe I stayed up til 5:30 with this game.

I searched a couple of other planets (one, a beautiful-but-deadly toxic planet, and the other a hot, barren hellscape) for the blueprint to make a warp cell (after building my hyperdrive and being given some antimatter), but to no avail.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. It keeps saying to craft the warp cell. Why does it think I'm able to? I have no blueprint for it.

Well, I'll figure it out later. Seven hours and haven't even completed the hyperdrive tutorial, but at least I've seen a lot.

It's too bad UPS came really late last night. I could've spend more time playing the game.

The first few hours have been really interesting so far. My first planet was very cold, but it was very relaxing with next to none hostile fauna. I wanted to keep playing throughout the night, but like many of you here, we have jobs to attend do.

My only wish is to play this game at 60fps. Might have to get the PC version after all.

Is anyone else experiencing a bug where you'll suddenly be shorter, or as if you were crouching? I got used to the size I was next to aliens, then suddenly I was like 60% the size. A cut scene set it right, but it seems to go back to it rather frequently.

You're not. Sean used a "haves and have nots" metaphor when describing the planet players might start on. You have a silver spoon, take advantage of it. But if you're going in looking for a more rigorous survival experience that's totally fair too.

This isn't good man. Are you stuck in a loop or can you leave the thing you're trying to open?

Not good either way!

Just as I stopped playing last night I realized I could encounter NPCs in their own ships at a space station and make an offer for their ship. If I buy their ship, what happens to the inventory in mine - is it instantly lost?

Played for a litte while last night and I might start over. At a planet that not really friendly and I need to figure out how to fight as these little critters on this planet are nasty.

Anyways, I digging the exploration and resources finding aspect of the game and really looking forward to getting into space.

But I'm really glad that I double dipped and pre-ordered the PC version on GOG.com (no DRM). This way I can play on my laptop almost anywhere I go.
