Would anybody else be super interested in a "casual mode"?

I'd personally LOVE to see a "non-survival mode" where it just allowed us endless fuel etc. and it became more about just seeing all we could see and discovering new planets/flora/fauna. Even if it became unlockable after making it to the center... i'd be completely ok with that and would likely never leave that mode.

That's basically what I want from this game.

At least energy is extremely easy to find, and the ship removes much of the survival annoyances.

So. Is this actually the first game that lives up to the hype? I played all night last night, and it just keeps getting better and better. I was hoping it would be good, but tempered my expectations. It seems they hit it out of the park however, at a rather remarkable magnitude.

Definitely one of the few for me. The Last of Us and The Witcher 3 being the other two.

Funny that - a small world game, an open world game, and an open universe game - one of each had met hype and expectations for me.

Love this game. I stayed up way later than I should have last night and I'm now paying the price. Kept saying to myself that I'm done for the night then went over a hill and saw something else I wanted to check out.

Yeah, don't worry about any expensive upgrades for your tool for a while. If you do upgrades, do the cheap ones. I say this because with some effort, you can get your gun upgraded to 20+ slots in not too much time.

This game can be played so differently, so it's hard to give advice past that. You can find multi tool upgrades doing basically anything. The correct prompts in alien discussions, you can find them in all sorts of buildings for sale, I think obelisks can give them to you, and those upgrade stations you can find on planets, I wonder if they can upgrade things for you other than armour slots, maybe they can give you weapons.

Like... Just play the game however you want, and in time you'll see tools!

I'm planning on trying to find every animal on a planet soon, because the rewards are so big - I'm just scared because aliens scare me.

Haha I hear ya there. I've been looking at the rewards for scanning all alien life and completing planets and it's insane!! I figured out late last night that by uploading the aliens, discoveries and points of interest you get units too.

I really love the menu you can check after discovering an alien species. super slick!

first lovk up in over 20 hours... thankfully it wasnt a hard lock was just about to unplug to console and the error report thang came up.... hope its my last..

I've had 1 hard lock, and the game has crashed to the OS every single time I've died. (Died about 6 times now)

It's pretty funny, because they show you a random quote from a sci-fi author, then the console blue screens.

Every time this happens I reload the game and the game resumes exactly as it should... I'm spawned in the nearest space station with my grave marker as a waypoint.

Mine crashed once while reloading a save. When I restarted the game it loaded up fine. Was worried for a second :p

You go to a planet, gather resources, sell them, head out to resource again.

Rince and repeat.

And it's fun :D

Why do people keep selling the game short like this? There's a seemingly strong story/adventure too and even other mechanics like puzzles.

The resource /exploration loop is deffo great though

So what are some general impressions of the game so far? Is the game fun? Is there enough to do?

I've only put in about 4 hours with it and those 4 hours have been great. There's a lot I haven't done yet but I've had a blast with it. There's a huge caveat with this game though, it's really what you make of it. It's a giant cosmic sandbox that allows you craft your own narrative.

I think it depends on how you view the experience. I tried to remove myself from "game" aspect and focused on the draw of being the creator of my story (regardless of how mundane or exciting). There does seem to be a healthy amount of repetition but I have no idea what lies in the distance, there could be something that I missed or I'm just not looking hard enough. There is a depth of "reality" in it. Life isn't for or against, it just "exists" and you have to find ways to overcome the obstacles placed before you...whether that is mining, fighting or discovering.

It's definitely an experience. Something you truly have to try for yourself. I don't think reviews or "impressions" will describe how you will travel through the game. It could be money well spent or a quick turn-around sell.

I will say, it's the first game I've ever played that made me want to keep a log of what I was doing.

Yeah, what's with the bug making me really short?

Also, everyone really should try melee-boosting. Run, melee attack, then immediately jump and glide and get insane speed.

yea i do it non stop now... really hope its not patched....walking is just tooooo fucking slow....

also hella jellly from you guys that get to smoke with game....

I wish I could leave a trail when I explore caves. I got stuck in one for two hours looking for a way out. My biggest gripe is the inventory space, but I'm still with the starting gear. I can buy a ship with extra slots, but I get the feeling I should save my money for later in the game.

So far I've barely been mining. Just plutonium here and there really. You don't need the other resources much, early on anyway, and you get cash from discoveries, so I just trade for minerals. Quick and easy.

I was so ready for this game, and literally none of the criticisms that have come out thus far would bother me EXCEPT what I'm hearing about a real lack of variety in regards to planets and lifeforms.

I could explore the galaxy for hours and hours, but not if it's a galaxy full of palette swaps and mix and match body parts.

That other NMS thread is so embarrassing. Yay, video games.

Anyway, started last night on a relatively temperate planet. Spent hours exploring and still didn't discover two animals (WHERE ARE YOU??!?). The inventory system is a bit of a mess, but still was just in awe the whole time. And that first time that you leave the planet? Incredible stuff.

Does anyone know--I am two or three systems deep and haven't been asked to make a choice between following Atlas and a free form alternative. Is my game bugged?

I see people referencing that choice, but have not encountered it in my game, I think.

Kinitari's #1 cave spelunking tip:

Get them grenades, and maybe (if you have it) a radius upgrade for it. If I'm ever done being in a cave, I just dig on a 45 degree angle 'up'.

Yeah just give me unlimited ship fuels and some sort of way to keep HUGE stockpiles of inventory and i'm good for casual exploration. MAYBE give me the ability to craft a better suit that isn't affected by the cold/heat/radiation etc. (though i bet that exists and i'm just not there... only few hours into the game)

That should have been right at the very beginning, next to your damaged ship.

Stay in the OT, spoiler and screenshot threads. Other NMS threads are a shit-fest.

So, after mining the heck out of my starter planet that was fortunately filled with gold everywhere, I set on my way to visit the next planet in my system.
And what do you know, there's even more gold on this one holy shit. There's literally entire mountains of gold, so much I could never mine it all in my lifetime probably.

Guess I won't need to worry about credits for a while lol.

Playing the PS4 version while waiting for/deciding whether or not to cancel the PC version. I thought it was pretty boring but then I looked up last night after spotting another question mark...marker on the horizon and 4 hours seemed to have passed since I started sooooooooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess unless I really get bored I'll get the PC version. Would love a higher framerate and less pop-in (m/k setup may be preferable to the controller setup as well, but I just may not have found the sweet spot for those settings, yet.)

Edit: Also, I found a new organism and renamed it Squiggleface. Sorry.

Good, so far this game is bug-free for me :-)

I just name the system and the planet. I'm too lazy to type all the animals and plants.

I just use my two daughters' names, and the number.
I wish I were an NBA player, I would have a huge pool of names to draw inspiration from

Hahaha, nice. Simple sounds better.

Got my first bit of repeated content last night, and as a double whammy it was back to back. Warped into a new solar system, pinged for areas of interest and found an abandoned outpost. Flew down to the planet (while getting hit with the Arrival to Destination bug where the counter just stops going down and you never get close to the marker till you stop and possibly land first) checked out the site and got a really neat little back story about some experiment gone awry at the location.

There was one of those bypass markers just outside the facility so I trigger that and opt for the distress transmission. It directs me to another abandoned facility 12 minutes away. I zoom over there, and it's this partially flooded building - very cool looking. I swim into the building and it's decorated in the same fashion as the place I just left, and the story prompt from interacting with the terminal is the exact same.

I mean, I totally expected the game to reuse content and these little short stories. But I guess that's the problem with procedurally generated content is that it doesn't seem to take into account what you've seen recently. Kind of let the air out of my excitement a bit. I'm only like 4 or 5 warps into the game. Hoping this is a just a fluke and not the start of seeing the same prompts over and over. :/

This was honestly a major concern of mine 2-3 hours into the game. That all changed last night once I started going to a bunch of different star systems. I've seen a lot of cool looking and unique alien life on these planets, and the planets are starting to feel more unique and varied. It's pretty much always going to look like a minecraft generated world, but I've been to planets with some floating land, planets that are mostly water, jungle planets, a planet that looked just like Hoth. It definitely opens up in that regard and I'm about 6-7 hours in now.

Loving the game so far, everything I've hoped for! Really wishing I could just take the rest of the week off to play it.

On another note, anyone know if it's ok to sell
atlas stones
?
I haven't found a reason not to yet.

Does anyone know--I am two or three systems deep and haven't been asked to make a choice between following Atlas and a free form alternative. Is my game bugged?

I see people referencing that choice, but have not encountered it in my game, I think.

There was a choice at the beginning that was very easy to miss. I missed that one but I came across it again 3 or 4 systems in.

I found this ship abandoned on my starting planet :

How do we tell how good our ships are? I Googled the name and came back with nothing.

Found a similar one... I left it and 'salvaged' some tech from it.

I am going to enter the code for the cool X-Wing-ish (minus the X) looking DLC one, since my ship is fully repaired.

I have a sick looking Mass Effect like rifle with a lot more slots, as well as my starting suit slots are fully unlocked.

On a side note... that Atlas ball in the beginning when you choose to 'accept it or not'.... seems to always reset after a while?

It happens right outside your damaged ship at the beginning of the game. I don't remember which thing you need to examine to make it happen. It's possible that you didn't examine it, so you automatically chose free roam?

Finally, I figured out how to run an hour in...lol. So apparently I crash landed on a planet with an abundance of hostile drones and high toxicity...I looked like an idiot trying to slow walk away from drones...haha.

Did you already have the quest when you redeemed the ship? When I redeemed mine right when I started the game, it no longer gave me the quests to get the hyperdrive, instead it wanted me to get out of the system to continue the story. This made it so no other ships had hyperdrives and I had to get rid of that ship to restart the quest.

I started the game, chose follow Atlas, looked in the menu and redeemed ship.
Went exploring the planet, fixed the ship in the process, then decided to lift off.
Flew to a space station, had a chat with the guy, don't really remember what about.
Flew out, picked a random planet, landed at the beacon, scan told me to find an alien signal.
Found an alien in a small station, he gave me hyperdrive blueprint.

have to say this game needs

a local map when on a planet ( i kind of understand why their isnt mapping every planet would take forever )

let me set a waypoint ( lost an upgrade because i couldnt find it again)

missions on planets (is fun but now its just go to green ? repeat or farm materials )

have mooore variety in the shelters, buildings and stations

locking the atlas pass thing until 4 warps in was fucking stupid

Found a planet abundant with gold

Never leaving

I should never have left my home planet. Fuck. Gold everywhere, and huge, HUGE heridium towers.

My favourite thing to do with those is mine a spiral going upwards and jet pack up in the process. then when I'm at the top, survey the surroundings. :D

Since it appears that I missed the choice ball--am I boned for going freeform? I still see a star-map-throughline to the center in the navigator/hyperjump map.

Ffs I can't find my starting solar system anymore -.-

It's VERY wonky and the NMS server has to say "online"

-I go to Galactic Map
-Press Up on D-pad to 'search for discoveries"
-then wait for a sound
-press right on D-pad and it'll scroll through the 'closest discoveries" which USUALLY show my previous discovered systems.

Kinitari's #1 cave spelunking tip:

So you can blast through regular materials with grenades? My mining laser let me down in that regard. Guess I'll get those grenades going.

So is all the life on the planets plants and animals? Are all the humanoid aliens just in buildings and ships, but not actually on foot on the planets?

I could explore the galaxy for hours and hours, but not if it's a galaxy full of palette swaps and mix and match body parts.

Shame, sure this is what it is. It's procedurally generated - how else could they do it? Aside from loading even more templates? perhaps they will in future patches?

The trick is to look beyond the cut and paste nature of the world generation and allow yourself to experience the beauty and variation on offer. Literally I've gone from Ice Planets to Desert Worlds to Radioactive Barren Wastelands to the most beautiful lush planets teaming with life. And while there's been a certain similarity between worlds, each and every one has been different and magical in it's own right.

And people have posted videos and images of worlds like nothing I've experienced yet to I know there's more out there for me to find...

it's right next to your ship when you start. Not sure if you can get back to that, but I chose
to refuse the atlas, and I was offered a chance to rejoin it when I found another story moment.

I love how just landing the damn ship feels like a minigame.

*about to pass over abandoned factory*

*can no longer see factory, but know you're just above it*

*land... NOW*

*lands on top of the tallest fucking tower in the factory, exit ship, fall, get hurt badly*

*discovers what those damn lighted-up totems are for, thankfully*

Really loving this game. Wasn't sure I was gonna like it as much as I do for the first few minutes, figuring everything out, and I wasn't entirely sure I wanted to dive into a resource farm-fest... So good, though.

Wiped my character and figured I would start fresh with my knowledge from the first play through and that I'm not hindered by that garbage pre-order ship glitch.

On a red hot planet now! No snow here.
