NSMB 2 Review Thread

How in the world did NSMB Wii get a lower overall than DS? I mean its a good game, but the Wii version is much faster/fun to run though.

3d land is what i always expected a 3d mario would be when i was a kid, except with things like level design and challenge.

I just wish 3D land had less abstract level design, and actual themed stages similar to past Mario titles. Didnt really seem that challenging either...at least the first half of the game.

Challenge I'd agree for the most part although it has it's moments and then some towards the end, but level design seems what it should be for a handheld 3D mario. It may not be grand but it's very tight overall without much faults, what were you expecting? Less fixed paths?

I recall some places marking it down for advertising the multiplayer as a big feature that some
most
reviewers found frustrating because of the cluster **** that could happen when you had 4 players simultaneous.

honestly, how the MP is handled in NSMBW is pretty bad. they could have at least given you the option to turn off the "competitive" aspect.

Um....you were really expecting a difficult challenge out of a 3D mario game? Uh...okay! I'd say the late special worlds of 3D land was on par with the late game difficult challenges of Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 and Super Mario Sunshine, not any less by any means.

Sounds solid but unspectacular, pretty much what was expected.

I've been growing increasingly weary of Nintendo's play it safe design philosophy for existing franchises, but this may be the first time I skip out on a Mario game because of it. Never even finished NSMB Wii, hard for me to justify spending $40 on the next incremental entry to the series no matter what platform it's on.

An option to make it so you can run though each other and not jump on top of each other would probably be a good feature.

This probably wouldn't have been a very good idea in practise. If the characters didn't interact as they do, it wouldn't be a particularly good multiplayer experience, rather just four simultaneous single player ones.

Ultimately, you'd just end up with the player in front doing everything that was worth doing, while the others lagged behind and got bored. The chaos, while, well, chaotic, may have been frustrating at times, but it's how they differentiated playing solo from playing with friends.

It definitely worked in that regard.

as someone who plays constantly with a 6 year and a 4 year old, it does not make the experience fun for anyone. all i really want is the option to turn it off.

heh kinda expected those scores, will still get the game to play on my new 3DS XL

but i wish the minigames made a comeback :( , the ones from super mario 64 ds in the NSMB were awesome and addicting B^)

I can almost guarantee it's more fun than playing without any interaction between the characters. Perhaps the concept of a symmetric multiplayer platformer is just a flawed one -- I think NSMBU and Rayman Legends have the right idea.

But, fair enough, if you're playing with young kids, then it's probably a good solution. They might get enough out of the experience even while lagging behind.

For a bit of perspective, you guys ought to read this thread for a bit: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100768

There's naturally some negativity there, as with any game, but the vast majority is overwhelmingly positive. NSMB was much loved in 2006.

Hell, even avowed haters of the game today might be surprised to find a post they themselves made in there proclaiming their love for it.

Whoa... there's only like three people banned on the first page of that thread. And it's from six years ago! That has to be some kind of record for a big thread.

surprised me too, ha

there are plenty of banned users on later pages though :P

Wait, even the original NSMB had a gold box in Japan?

NoA screwed us over twice! :(

I wish there was more to this game, more to do with collecting coins, some minigames etc. But I love mario so I'll still be buying it. I am part of the problem.

Yeah...why does Square Enix out of all companies give us the exact same box art for Kingdom Hearts: 3D (inside and outside) as Japan's and nothing less?
Because it looks cool, it's a nice touch, and is probably cheap as fuck to do.

Why NoA doesn't do inside covers, I'll never know

The game really could have done without the tanuki suit. It wouldn't have made it hard as balls but the suit made it too easy.

I'll still pick it up and enjoy it, I'm sure. I wasn't expecting much of anything, considering even the trailer explained it's pretty much a Coin Collectathon.

Sounds a bit like the original NSMB DS, which is fine by me. Considering this will not see a price drop anytime soon, will grow in content through DLC, and will most likely be the last Mario platformer of the 3DS era; Day one for me. I've never been done wrong with a Mario platformer before.

I know it kind of sucks that we are getting two 2D Mario games in the same year, but they really are two different beasts. I'll be playing NSMB2 by myself, and will most likely be playing the bulk of NSMBWiiU with two or more people. It does reek of desperation from Nintendo though, but not as much as Nintendo's three big 3DS titles this year being Mario games (NSMB2, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star). GCN-era deja vu anyone?

To be fair, those three games are all EXTREMELY different from each other. Brand name is pretty much where the similarities stop :p

This will be my first New Super Mario Bros game ever so I'm pretty pumped about it. I'm hoping the 3D effect is going to be real nice.

I guess this is more or less like SMB 1 and SMB 2 jp. With Reznor popping up, I was sorta hoping for game similar to Mario World, or at least something with more experiment stage/art design.

Unless those aspects are in the game at some point.

Is it just subtle?

It blurs out the background as it goes farther out, which is neat at first, but all it does is degrade the quality of the background and you miss details of it. I'm pretty sure the effect itself is subtle, too. That's what I heard

3D is pretty much useless for this one

Oh gosh, brace yourself for totally different physics, especially if you're super fond of SMB3 and SMW. It takes a while to get used to how Mario controls in the NSMB games. He actually feels less responsive than SMB1 Mario in some ways, but being able to wall jump is very fun.

Had it pre-ordered for awhile, all these less than glowing reviews are kind of bumming me out. I'm sure I'll get some enjoyment out of it though.

I really hope they take the 2D series in a different direction. I'm sure once the sales start to slow down for the NSMB series then they'll go with a new type of 2D game, but I'm curious how long it's gonna take before sales start decreasing.

I'm not convinced NSMB2 will sell anywhere near what DS or Wii did especially with the competion from U later this year. But really I hope this is the last of the current interation of New Super Mario Bros.

I just want to see more dino enemies and food themed names or a Yoshi's Island 3. Still getting the game though, since it seems like it will be a step up from NSMB Wii, and I really enjoyed that.

Sucks that there really arent that many original themes...does the volcano theme from Wii make a comeback?

I expected these kind of reviews from this game. Simply put, for this sort of Mario game, as long as it has the traditional great controls, I'll buy it. Heck, I'd buy Mario game after Mario game as long as it was still Mario quality at the core, even if nothing new or innovated was included. I almost look at these games as extensions of one another now, and go to the Mario Galaxy and 3D Land games for the true innovations these days. Bring it on, I want more Mario levels to master!

EDIT:

And yes, I'd love if more innovations and new surprises were in these 2D side scrolling Mario games, of course. I would just love them that much more. Hopefully they do start to put more time and effort into the 2D releases like they did back in the day. I hope and dream that they do that sometime, maybe after this latest round of games. I'm just saying I'm a still a sucker for them, and pretty much no matter what (unless they just destroyed the controls), I'll buy one right after the other. Call me a sheep if you wish, baaaaaaaaaaaa.

Sure, but it would of been like if Halo ODST, Halo 3, and Halo Wars all came out in the same year. I don't think it would of went over well.

If this game fails to be a hit in all regions like past NSMB games I think Nintendo will enter an all new phase of panic mode. I mean, what happens when mario stops meeting and surpassing sales expectations? Tables would be flipped like mad.

This really is the first Mario I don't care to get. I may pick it up at some point if I find it cheap, but that's it. It sucks that they blew a chance to make coins interesting. I don't doubt the level design is good and a step above NSMB1, but everything else just looks uninspired. The only silver lining I see is that NSMB2 will probably sell gangbusters, giving Nintendo a good chunk of money that I hope they use to take some creative risks on the 3DS.

And here's to hoping that NSMB U kicks ass. The artstyle got a boost the series so desperatey needed. Now if only they would change the music.

Hopefully stop being such fucking lazy asses and put more content in games. I mean, there's so much potential for a game like this, but Nintendo likes to ignore it.

wouldn't sales be a better indicator of franchise fatigue?

I think you're right, but the average score can definitely reflect fatigue.

I say this because Nintendo has done a very good job of keeping the profile of Mario platformers high. 20+ years and the average Mario platformer still sells and reviews extremelly well. If they release too many titles in a short time, or drop the quality, this might not hold true for the future...
