[NXGamer] The Matrix Awakens: Tech-Demo Analysis - PS5 | SX | SS

Saw some images comparing the versions favoring the PS5 version, is this true? No idea where it's from.

I think the IQ settings between the PS5 and the XSX are the same. It's only the XSS that falls behind in that.

I haven't seen any images that show the PS5 version looking better than the XSX version. They both look the same to me.

Around what I guessed.
Impressive on big machines.
Series S was left way behind.
I wouldn't go quite that far. The S version still looks mighty fine on my 1080p plasma even though the PS5 version looks better. But there's not a world of difference between them on this TV.

It's very different at 4k though. But that's more because the S kinda looks like shit at 4k.

Yep, I used to be a huge native resolution purist back in the day. Like most on the PC. Mainly due to upscalers weren't that great on either cards or monitors.

Now that the techniques have improved so much, I've been convinced to ditch that mindset.

True in the early days some reconstruction techniques were really bad. Like RDR2 on the Pro for example.

Cross-post from the other thread:

Internal resolutions and framerates:

  • PS5: 1080p - 24fps cutscenes, 30fps gameplay with frame pacing issues.
  • Series X: 1080p - 24fps cutscenes, 30fps gameplay with drops.
  • Series S: 720p-756p (along with reduced world detail, reduced pedestrian/car count, less geometry and more aggressive LOD) - 24fps cutscenes, 30fps gameplay with drops.
In line with expectations, and the last point basically what the ID developers were saying over a year ago.

I do hope MS and Sony have something up their sleeves regarding image reconstruction.

The fact that this was created by, as he said, creative film makers, shows me hat video game developers need to step their game up.

Are all the bright, young creative minds going into the film world rather than video game development?

Well my monitor doesn't support 120HZ so it's not something that I can see.

Are you talking about the input lag?

I should try playing some old games at 120FPs to see if I notice any difference in the controls.
Both lower input lag and pin-pointing targets in 120fps are easier.
Linus did a whole video about it:

Notice that your eyes are muscles and they need to be trained for higher framerates.

Framerate during open world free roam looks better on PS5, but NXGamer didn't compare framerate in that part apparently, only in the cinematic part.

Like I said I saw this on another board and I don't know where it's from. If it's fake or whatever it's not my fault.

I don't know if the PS5 has done something to clean it up(or R* did in later patches), but I play on the PS5 now off my external SSD and it looks razor sharp with no issues. It was a very nice upgrade over the PS4. No more jaggies or distant broken blur in the foliage. Razor sharp textures too. Even the lighting/shadows look better.

I just wish it would get a 60fps patch, so bad. Fingers crossed it'll come after the GTA5, since it seems they have all hands on deck to get that out and fix that trilogy disaster.

I could always play on the PC for 60fps, but I like to play RDO and the PC version is pure hacking haven.

Would have to be a weird bug if legit. I doubt the XSS would outperform the XSX (as pointed out in the first shot) as a standard point of operation. Pop-in is generally a little worse on XSS in most of the comparisons.

Yeah I don't really get people who say that - can people actually tell if something is 4k or not? I can't see the difference and I have a 4k tv
Me too. I hardly never see pixels anymore, unless I'm playing 3 year old games. Screen-tearing and bad performance is something I notice immediately.

Nah, they just started to get the UE5 this past year. I'm sure we're going to see a lot of amazing UE5 games over the next few years.

As well as amazing proprietary engine games. ND is probably going to amaze balls.

Film, writing some code for databases, some far easier jobs that pay far better for far less work.
Few want to go into an industry that has people complain that they don't accept a tiny amount of pay for skill they could make far more with elsewhere.

Yes, PS5 version looks slightly better, it has a bit more details far away. Pics are from Eurogamer / DF article. The difference should be confirmed soon in their video

In select scenarios that are highly likely to just be engine quirks when running all this in real-time.

From the same exact article and comparison tool.

It's just LOD streaming problems. Nothing really to take away from it. Not surprised you're jumping to conclusions though looking for confirmation bias.

Maybe... We'll see what they say. The framerate looks clearly better on PS5 in free roam sections though.

Or is this confirmation bias too (see link I gave above for the source video) ?

FWIW, I can't tell any difference between my XSS and PS5 in the open world part. I'd expect any framerate differences to be chance over anything else.

I've done my fair share of messing around with the engine on my PC and let's just say there are performance quirks. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Waiting for the thumbs up and fire emojis from the Blue Boys here. Something tells me it won't happen 🤭

LoL
The typical thing of you to put captures of specific moments that lead to deception when you can put the same where the opposite occurs. Or youtuber of doubtful credibility.
The grace is that both NXG and DF say that the performance of both is the same.
In fact what is detected now is that the PS5 version suffers more from framepacing in shotting scene. He speculates that The Coalition's hand is appreciated in this regard in favor of XSeries and that he hopes it can be updated on PS5 in the same sense.

In free mode everything is configurable and random and of course there is no place to compare with exactness although the impression is that they perform the same. That said, it is a technical demonstration, with conditions, created by a ten developers. A commercial game would have more means and time dedicated to optimization. In facts actually I think it works too well to be a technical demo of UE5.

A 1080P game is ac unity on ps5. Try it and see how blurry it looks on a 4k oled. 1080p but doing temporal trickery to fake higher res does so much for a cleaner iq + high res texture.
There is a discussion for a pro versions of consoles though to at least get it to 1440P / 60fps.

So, PS5 Pro: 2160p @ 60 FPS?
PS5 Pro is 80 tflops?

It's actually 900p. AC unity was made back when Ubisoft wanted parity between both consoles so both the x1 and ps4 version were 900p. I distinctly remember the uproar over it.

Console warriors have been known to post misleading videos from no-name Youtubers to celebrate a fake victory. Just saying:messenger_peace:

They're certainly known to come cheerleading their plastic box in every comparison thread when they feel attacked for some reason, just like you're doing right now. :messenger_blowing_kiss:

Depends how cpu intensive this is, if its super intensive then u will only see a resolution bump like with ps4 pro most likely.
It is not CPU intensive… Epic left pretty head room to make game logic processing in CPU… they wanted a demo similar to what developers can reach with actual games.

Just a correction.

They said PS5 framepace issues… Series X and S have drops in framerate.

They didn't say it was the same.
The drops are of the same class on PS5 as well ... In that NXG video, Alex / DF's impressions on Resetera and Beyond3d are perfectly reproduced, which says the variations are ~ 1fps up or down in one or the other at times in the shooting scenes that would be the most demanding. And in free mode both work or they "suffer" in the same way.
That between XSX and PS5 has little interest in the comparison and that the interesting thing is more in XSS compared to those for obvious reasons.

I never looked at these details but I noticed in the videos that PS5 looked closer to reality for some reason but I was thinking maybe it was just the difference in the settings it's not big enough to clearly point it out in motion but its there.

Oh! I didn't know, thanks.

Weird, it's probably a glitch then. If you look closely you notice it's absolutely the same polygon count, it's either an LOD transition issue or slower data streaming (or both).

That's the most impressive thing. It looks incredible but it has a lot of headroom left... It's just a first UE5 step.

When you think talented devs will work for years on that same UE5 and Nanite tech now... The potential for wonderful complex open world games is huge. We're in for a treat.

I can't wait to see that DF article saying the same framerate…
