Just saw a video about Lucky's Tale on Kotaku. Obviously being made by Oculus Studios, I'm not expecting that title to make it over to PSVR but I hope we get something similar.
It's a very interesting way to show VR in a new way, as I've yet to wrap my head around a lot of third person applications.
Anyone who's played it, what were your thoughts? Good platformer with a unique feature or just a glorified tech demo?
I played it for the first time a few minutes ago, but on the DK2 since I don't have the full Rift yet. I was very impressed, and can safely consider it the second most impressive VR game I've tried so far, with only Elite: Dangerous edging ahead.
Lucky's Tale is a crowning example of how 2D screenshots and videos aren't even remotely representative of the VR experience. I've seen the trailers, and they never impressed me much. I've tried enough VR not to trust my gut feelings on these things however. Turning the game on in the DK2 was fantastic from the very first moment, and it ran perfectly smooth on my old GTX 780, even when I turned up detail to High (didn't test that too much though).
Only played the very first level since I want to save the full experience for the CV Rift, but what I played made me really want to keep playing. The main character is about the size of a small doll, or a huge D&D miniature, for those of you who might have ever used those. There are also underground sections where the scale is somewhat smaller, which is a little weird but works very well anyway. It all looks very pretty when you see it inside the Rift itself, whereas it looks pretty basic on a monitor.
Not much I can say about the gameplay after just one level, but it seemed very fun and made me want to play more. It flowed very well, and there was tons of exploration to do in a relatively small area. Finding secrets is one of the things that's going to feel very different from traditional platformers here, as it will require paying close attention to your surroundings in a totally different way. I found one big secret, and only because I decided to look up at the right point in the level.
I'll probably save the rest of the game (and the other stuff in Oculus Home) for the CV Rift.
