anyone else ever run into a weird issue where the headset just randomly goes black at times (requiring you to kill the game app?).

I'm assuming it's something with the USB 3.0 drivers, but I am using the recommended PCI-E card that Oculus sent. Maybe the drivers from the company are bad and I should just use the Windows 10 drivers? Hmm

See this:

Not sure if it's the same issue or not.

The Inateck cards definitely seem to benefit from Microsoft's Windows 10 driver

It happened two or three times for me. Usually closing and restarting the Oculus app does the trick. I think a couple of times I caused it by running a Steam app within Virtual Desktop so that's just something I'm doing. I hope Virtual Desktop fixes that in the future.

Got my "shipping soon" e-mail today! Mine was a late 12 minute order, I'm in Nevada.

My original "plan" (when I thought it would arrive in March) was to play classic Doom on it, and then the new Doom when it arrived. It was looking like it wouldn't even get here in time for the new one, and I was just about to buy it for PS4 instead (love that easy video capture).

But after I got the notice, I thought, "Great, I'll get it on PC and play it in VR instead!". Did a quick Google search to make sure it supports VR...and it doesn't? Some bad blood between id and Carmack? What a downer. I thought it would be front and center, because I remember him talking up VR and I think he was still with id at the time.

Oh, well. At least I'll get to try some things that you've all been talking about. Thanks for all the impressions!

Why are they almost identicle? I just want the one that displays the cleaner picture.

They're different. VIve has a slightly better FOV, a slightly less noticeable issue with the bloom effect from the lenses and is brighter. Rift has less screen door effect and somehow has a better sweet spot i.e. more of what you see seems to be in focus.
I think if you have major problems with one, it's unlikely the other will entirely fix them. Both have huge amount of room for improvement

So would you say the rift has better picture quality than the vive? I'm not satisfied of the image quality on the vive, I still see every pixel on the vive.

It's definitely different. If I had to chose a stance, I would say that I prefer the overall quality of the Rift, but by a razor thin margin. The Rift definitely has an ever so slightly softer, more natural looking image. I noticed the SDE effect less than I did with my Vive, focusing instead on how low resolution the display seems when under such high levels of magnification. Inversely, the Vive is slightly sharper, and with a more pronounced SDE. Almost unnoticeable, but just obvious enough to see a slight difference when used back to back.

Inversely, the FOV, nose gap, screen brightness, bloom, and reddish blacks kill the Rift for me. I prefer the Vive viewing experience as a whole, despite how slightly nicer the display+optics combo is on the Rift.

If you're not satisfied with the Vive, you won't be happy with the Rift either. It's a difference that, if I'm entirely honest, I doubt most casual users would even notice. I sat down with these two devices intent on comparing them, so for the first few hours I spent with the Rift I was constantly focusing on the literal act of using it, and not just experiencing things. I then went back to the Vive and did the same. Fortunately for both companies, this isn't how most people will or should use the hardware, and these issues really fade to the back of your mind after a few minutes.

pops brings up the same thing about rift and vive:
-one chose less magnification (or whatever) to have less screen door effect (SDE), a nicer picture, and less field of view (FOV)
-one chose more magnification (or whatever) to have more FOV, but more SDE and a less nice picture

same with other points between the two, but that image/fov stuff is what mattered to me. anyways, I heard all this stuff before the Head mounted displays were released to customers, but hearing it repeated by customers makes it more solid.

I don't know why you expected Doom to support VR, but I can pretty much tell you right away that it'll never get VR support. If it does, it will be through mods. The reason isn't because of bad blood or anything like that. It's simply because Doom (especially the new one) will be absolutely horrible in VR. Have you seen the enormous movement speed in the previews? The quick turns, sudden jumps, constant back and forth? You'd be sick within seconds, and that's not even an exaggeration.

Forget about playing Doom in VR. You might be lucky enough to develop the VR stomach for it (but I seriously doubt it). FPS is not a genre that translates well to VR in its (ie. the FPS genre's) current form.

So they attempted to pull my payment earlier today and I won't have the funds in there until Friday. Should i be OK, or do I really need to get that extra $20 in there for it to be able to take the payment now? I don't want to get pushed into the next batch.

The reality of the FPS situation in VR is still too bad, especially since the original Rift Kickstarter was fuelled by dreams of playing Doom 3 in VR. I remember trying to play TF2 when I got my DK1 and needing to take a Gravol after a couple of minutes. I still want to play an engrossing FPS in VR, and we're still not there.

My hope at this point is that galvanic vestibular stimulation mixed with tracked hand controllers and analog movement will somehow pan out, because even room scale with warping still feels too limiting for the games that I want to play.

A world ago.
And there was VR drama / bad blood after Carmack left for Oculus.
Bethesda claiming they were owned money.

Yes, but I didn't find out until now, when it became relevant to me, since I'm about to own both a VR device and the game. Fair enough? Or am I meant to know the state of every upcoming game?

One thing that's always a problem with me is the size of my head is fairly massive. I have the velrco strips on the side as extended as they can be without falling off, and it's still a bit too tight for my taste.
Not entirely surprising, I had problems finding helmets and such that fit me when I was in the army too, but still they should accommodate unusual head sizes a bit better. At least the army could custom fit stuff for me :)

(when I was a baby, the doctors said I might have a "water head", heh)
They designed the Rift to fit head sizes "from the 5th to the 95th percentile", so if your head isn't in that range, you're kinda screwed. I've read that Vive fits larger heads (mainly because it's just ski-mask-like straps with extra support on the top and in the back).

Latest update to Virtual Desktop has made the text a lot clearer to read. It's a little buggier though. I had two crashes while running it.

AirMech Command is a unique RTS that looks kinda like you're looking at a game laid out on a tabletop across from your opponent (it's like a modern Herzog Zwei, for you Genesis-heads)

Why I want VR... Eve Valkyrie - Ace Combat 7 (PSVR) ....................... and that.

My Rift shows up in 12-15 hours; have they patched in the ability to install games to drives other than C: yet? Also, do you have to install Oculus Home to the same drive as your games?

Getting my Eve: Valkyrie code has been a nightmare. Oculus never emailed it to me because my account doesn't even show my Rift as shipped (still pending as of an hour ago), let alone delivered. The CS person I was emailing finally escalated it after I keep reiterating that my Rift had indeed been shipped and delivered, despite what my account says. The next rep I spoke with just provided me a code and told me that they would look into the order issue to make sure I don't get charged twice. I tried to redeem the code a few minutes ago, and Oculus Home says that it's already been redeemed.

I'm not upset, just completely and utterly at a loss. The incompetency of the entire launch from Oculus is shocking.

The FPS genre has to change completely to work with VR. It's been designed around the limitations of screens for so long that making it realistic will only make people disappointed. In reality, running towards a waist-high obstacle to take cover from incoming fire, then popping up (slowly), taking aim and firing is exciting stuff. On a screen it would be boring and incredibly slow since you don't have to worry about inertia, can turn at the flick of a wrist, and don't have to worry about muscles and balance to, say, aim. So they just sped everything up and discarded every illusion of realism, and now that VR is here, we're paying the price.

We aren't likely to see anything that reminds us of traditional FPS games until we get VR interfaces that hook up directly to our brains.

Hi,

I done the oculus rift test to see whether my PC can run it and ran into some issues.

It says my 3770k isn't good enough,

My gpu is a gtx 670, I will be obviously upgrading this.

For USB, this came up.

Some of the hardware that powers your USB ports is incompatible with rift. Here is the hardware that is incompatible.

ASMedia USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0.96 (Microsoft)

When I click learn more it takes me to this website.
https://support.oculus.com/878672575564926
Warning: Unable to determine USB 3.0 compatibility

If you received this warning message, our compatibility tool detected that some of the hardware that powers your computer's USB ports have known incompatibilities with Rift.
What does this mean?
Rift may not work with your computer's USB 3.0 ports. If you are unable to setup your Rift, please try one of the options below to resolve the issue.

Purchase and install a compatibile PCI Express USB 3.0 Expansion Card. Click here to view a compatible card.
If this card is not available to you, use another PCI-E USB 3.0 Expansion Card that uses the Fresco Logic FL1100EX chipset.

Anyone else get this or know what I should do?

My motherboard is, ASUS MAXIMUS-V-GENE MB, Intel Z77, 4 x DDR3, 2 x PCI-E 3.0, 4x SATA III, 4x USB 3.0, HDMI, DP, 7.1CH, GBLAN, RAID, CrossFireX, SLI, ROG, uATX.

I've read up and I have to purchase one of these,

Inateck Superspeed 4 Ports PCI-E to USB 3.0 Expansion Card - Interface USB 3.0 4-Port Express Card Desktop with 15 pin SATA Power Connector, [ Include with A 4pin to 2x15pin Cable + A 15pin to 2x 15pin SATA Y-Cable

Here's the link , but which one do I chose under ' size name' in this link?

http://www.fishpond.com.au/Electron...-15pin-to-2x-15pin-SATA-Y-Cable/9999829467080

Never mind, order the 4 port one.

The Inateck cards definitely seem to benefit from Microsoft's Windows 10 driver

I did get the working driver, but it didn't seem to fix it.

Then I disabled the USB 3.0 ports on my motherboard with shit Asmedia drivers and now all seems to be well tonight.

So I'm not sure why the Asmedia drivers would infect the Inateck card ports, but something could've been happening there?

I'm also unclear on how to permanently uninstall drivers on Windows 10 as it seems to auto-reinstall, I guess I need to actually delete the driver files from the machine?

Sorry for the noob questions.
Once I receive the inateck card, I would need to disable the onboard USB?
Regarding drivers, do I need to install any on Windows 10?

Disable the offending driver

Yes. You pick the drive you want to install games to when you install the Oculus Home software. You can't pick and choose for each game. It's a one time setting.

FWIW, EVE isn't that great. It's definitely worth a go if/when you get it for free, but it's far from the best experience available. I was enjoying it for a bit but the method for unlocking new ships is really slow and stupid, so I'm not finding the game to be all that replayable in its current state.

Backpedalling a bit. This upcoming patch that was just announced looks really good and addresses a lot of my issues with the game.

Is it not possible to play The Witness in VR anymore? I really wanted to try it but it won't launch that way.

Someone earlier in the thread claimed they got it to work with the CV1, somehow. I'm assuming you've added the
Code:
-vr
to the launch parameters?

You can try out the LibOVRWrapper to see if that works. It lets you play many games/experiences that were built with previous versions of the SDK, as far back as 0.6.

Follow up with impressions if you manage to get it working!

I got it working with a DK2 a few weeks back but it was super janky. No idea if folks have it in a state where it's actually a good way to play.

New Project Cars patch on Steam, not sure about Oculus Home:
https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4j19gs/project_cars_patch_110_vr_updates/
Due to the extent of the Virtual Reality updates, we strongly recommend that you delete the configuration files that store the various settings. These are found in "\Users<username>\Documents\Project CARS" and are the files with XML extension.

HTC Vive support
Gaze control implemented, providing hands-free interaction with the User Interface
Mouse pointer control in HMD view implemented
Photo mode is now fully functional
Depth of Field effects now work correctly
The game will now retain controller focus when the player removes the HMD
Improved rendering system for Crepuscular rays and Sun flares
Improved rendering of dirt and rain drops on Helmet visor
Improved the default seat position
Improved the default HUD position
Improved default camera settings to prevent the car tilting independently from the player at steep inclines
Fixed a refresh issue on the UI when returning from a race to the main menu

Gaze control is awesome. Hope it performs better as well.

Also, The Solus Project now has Oculus 1.3 and Vive support in their release candidate / beta branch. Haven't heard much about this game.

What a coincidence. I'm working on this game.

Happy to post a few free copies here if you guys are interested.

I know the programmers/lead designers are busting their backs getting VR working on this thing.

diablos991

Can’t stump the diablos
First night I tried it I got simulation sickness from the first level of lucky's tale.

Couldn't play last night because the thought of putting it on was making my headache start again.

Going to try again tonight and hope things are better. :(

Also couldn't get SteamVR to recognize the rift. Kept giving an error (108 I believe) saying the headset was not available.

As a VR noob it was interesting. The coolest thing was looking at that alien during the setup. You can tell the tech is still early with the bad IQ and jaggies. Makes me worried for what PSVR will look like since it's on less powerful hardware.

Cool, thanks for posting! I'm sure people here would love free codes in exchange for impressions / feedback :) Just use modbot, PMs, or hide in email tags so lurkers don't get 'em.

Consider posting in the Vive thread too.

That sucks :( I wouldn't have thought Lucky's Tale would be that nausea inducing but I've heard of it happening to plenty of people. Definitely stick with the comfortable stuff for a while and ease yourself in. Don't play EVE Valkyrie yet. Watch Henry and play some Farlands.

I'd love a copy. My Rift should be arriving in the next week or so.
