Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

LOL ETERNAL CHAMPIONS, I remember having fun with it when I was a kid at friends house but shit that was a huuuuge turd.

PHANASY STAR 2 worth it? How does it compare to other jrpg, the serie seems to get some love around here but I have no idea if the games are really good.
It's terrible. Primitive shit game non-design topped off with a broken UI. I think the usual twelve fervent Sega fanboys are very close now to pointing out that it has a storyline that somehow makes its complete and utter suckage as a game acceptable, but it's really just a huge waste of time.

Phantasy Star II is tempting though... Thoughts?

Phantasy Star II worth buying?

For those wondering if Phantasy Star II is a good RPG, the answer is: yes, absolutely. It's a fantastic game and was way, way ahead of its time in a whole host of ways -- from its storytelling to gameplay, for instance. And it's got some really great music.

A couple caveats:
1.) It has aged. The game came out in 1988, and while it was ahead of its time in a lot of ways, in other ways someone who's just now playing it for the first time will probably feel it's archaic in some respects. For instance, the menu interface is pretty clunky. If you can get past that sort of thing, though...
2.) It's hard. No, seriously. If you think any RPG getting made in the modern era is hard (aside from something like, say, Etrian Odyssey), then you haven't played Phantasy Star II yet. The game, especially near the start, is brutal and you need to make sure you save constantly because you can get wiped out easily. When you first start out, you'd better stay close to town. The game also doesn't do a lot of handholding -- there are large, open environments and you're expected to wander around (what we used to call exploring) and find your own way.
3.) It's available for cheaper on the PSP/PS2 Sega Genesis Collection. Though like I commented before, if the VC eventually gets the Master System's Phantasy Star I, I plan on getting all four games on VC, because no prior collection* has had all four of them together.

in English. The Japanese get complete PS collections twice: once for Saturn, once for PS2.

Worth it? It's the best game ever made, up until March 9th.

What's special about March 9th?

Next week's Japanese update isn't very interesting, aside from Custom Robo:

-Tantei Jinguuji Saburo: Shinjuku Chuuou Kouen Satsujin Jiken (FC)
-Custom Robo V2 (N64)
-Powerball (MD)
-Atlas (PCE)

Since the VC will get Master System games, I think it's just a matter of time before it gets Phantasy Star.

drake, Japan getting 4 games is interesting. I hope that is a good sign for the rest of us (Japan has also been getting a lot of 2 game weeks recently as well).

When you're just starting Phantasy Star 2 your best bet is start saving up for some ceramic knives(those really expensive ones in the second town's weapon shop). Slap a pair of those on Rudo & Rolf and you should be set until you reach the third town. When you get there you'll be able to get your first good healer and from there you should be able to manage.

Not that it gets easy or anything mind you. There are many situations that will come up and leave you scratching your head wondering what to do. At times your next destination isn't even remotely obvious(for example in order to reach a particular dungeon you need to find a certain island and walk along its mountains until you stumble into it). Since there are only 3 bosses this gives the developers free reign to make the random encounters as difficult as possible. It's most likely that you will not be able to finish a dungeon the first time you enter one. For one these dungeons are actual MAZES(save for maybe PS1 none of the dungeons in the PS series are as challenging) and some of the random encounters are really nasty.

Great game though...even if I've only finished it once.

I'm glad to sell anyone on Lords of Thunder.

It's such an awesome game and it's accessible even for non-shooter fans.

Makes the wait for March 9th a little less painful.

Actually, I'm grounded so I may not be able to post today. I'm only on now because my mom isn't here.

This doesn't have anything to do with that thread of yours in the OT, does it? >_>

Or did the Nintendo Ninjas make your parents ground you so that we couldn't get the info?

Mom caught me on Youtube and she thinks it's the holy grail of porn (which it is, but that isn't the point). I was really just watching Let's Plays, but she thinks I'm watching porn. I show her I'm not but she doesn't care and she starts yelling at me and I yell at her and now I'm grounded.

That's...wow.

That really sucks. :/

So, basically, your mom doesn't understand the internet at all?

A question about Lords of Thunder:
which are the proper armors to get on each stage? The manual doesn't tell it and there aren't faqs about the game on GFaqs!
On my first attempt through the game I tried Water Armor in most of the levels, failed pretty hard with Fire whenever I used it, and I don't remember what Wind was like. On my second attempt (and success), Earth Armor through every level carried me by just fine.

Edit: Also, just because JSnake probably won't be able to post, surely today is when we return to a three-game week, heralded by Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Warsong, and the surprise translation of Monster World IV.

Personally, I use the Earth Armour on the desert stage and the forest stage. Basically, the Earth Armour is ideal in stages where there are a lot of ground units to deal with. The fireballs launched by the Earth Armour absolutely demolishes enemies on the ground.

For the others, I find that it's pretty much a toss-up between the Fire and Water Armours. I didn't find much of a use for the Wind Armour, though maybe I just didn't use it in the right stages. Fire pierces on the higher power levels, but Water fires at more angles.

I think my mom has short-term memory loss. She's in the next room, I'm here, and she's not yelling at me.

I shall abuse this glaring flaw in her memory. I am immune to punishment!

i can't believe i'm relying on a guy with an overprotective mother to leak me info about video games

I feel like I'm in 7th grade again and I'm SUPER jealous of my best friend since he has a subscription to Nintendo Power and I do not, which allowed him to hold all the juicy rumors about Super Mario Bros. 3 over my head for at least a hour before telling me.... the bastard.

Careful. Trust me, I've had to deal with a mother like that (but not as extreme as that) before.

Thankfully, I'm eighteen now, and I'm effectively immune. :D

Tell her that the internet will not allow you to be grounded.

Wait, wait, there's porn on youtube? Explain.

LOL!!! Poor JSnake. :( Sucks being a kid. I remember when my NES was taken away from me. (Yes, I'm dating myself badly there.) :lol

My parents didn't ground me. I went on restriction, which was basically being grounded except that if I did well enough at school, I could earn some stuff back. I aced me a few tests so that I could play Shinning Force 2 and watch SATAM on saturday morning.

Wii-kly Update: Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

Some gamers get skeptical when Roman numerals populate the title of a game. But make no mistake – this week’s offerings are no mere sequels. They are some of the most highly regarded classic games around. So stock up on some Wii Points™ to battle the Dark Force or complete an action-packed trilogy.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Ninja Gaiden™ III: The Ancient Ship of Doom: (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Violence, 500 Wii Points): Join master ninja Ryu Hayabusa, last member of the famous Dragon Clan, in the third and final chapter of the legendary Ninja Gaiden saga. Ryu is framed for FBI agent Irene Lew’s murder, and it’s up to him to clear his name. Defeating superior life-forms created out of “life energy” called BIO-NOIDs and avoiding enemy ambushes are among the many obstacles which Ryu faces in this unpredictable adventure of mystery, deceit and destruction. Noticeable changes to the game-play mechanics include Ryu’s ability to grab on to horizontal surfaces, his reduced falling speed and altered jumping maneuvers, and visible power-ups. Help Ryu defeat the forces of evil once more and discover the real culprit behind Irene’s death as one of the most loved trilogies in video-game history comes to a close.

Phantasy Star™ II: (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Hailed as one of the greatest games of all time by fans and media alike, Phantasy Star II is an RPG that features an epic story line and turn-based battles. Play as Rolf, Nei, Rudo or several other characters as you navigate through the Algol star system battling the evil Dark Force. Build your characters, select the right weapons and armor, and take on the forces of evil through various missions as you find the right combination of characters to complete each objective. Experience the magic once again in this great sequel.

Woot!

so when did ninja gaiden games become playable/beatable? i mean, for your relatively not-hardcore action gamer. i beat ninja gaiden on xbox, but those nes games (1 & 2) are ridiculous. is 3 different?

Sweet. Just about to finish Shining Force, just in time for another great Genesis RPG :D

I hate that Gaiden III wasn't originally released in Europe. Because of that, NoE wants to release all 3 US versions of the games instead of just putting up Shadow Warriors I and II, so we have to wait for another Hanabi Festival to get II and III, and pay more for them too :(

Jiggy, Iam Canadian, Capndrake or someone who checks this thread regularly needs to PM me whenever Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Kirby Superstar, Super Mario RPG, or Sonic 3 & Knuckles goes online.

NGII is probably the easiest, I'm afraid.
