PHANASY STAR 2 worth it? How does it compare to other jrpg, the serie seems to get some love around here but I have no idea if the games are really good.

It's terrible. Primitive shit game non-design topped off with a broken UI. I think the usual twelve fervent Sega fanboys are very close now to pointing out that it has a storyline that somehow makes its complete and utter suckage as a game acceptable, but it's really just a huge waste of time.

Phantasy Star II worth buying?

For those wondering if Phantasy Star II is a good RPG, the answer is: yes, absolutely. It's a fantastic game and was way, way ahead of its time in a whole host of ways -- from its storytelling to gameplay, for instance. And it's got some really great music.

A couple caveats:
1.) It has aged. The game came out in 1988, and while it was ahead of its time in a lot of ways, in other ways someone who's just now playing it for the first time will probably feel it's archaic in some respects. For instance, the menu interface is pretty clunky. If you can get past that sort of thing, though...
2.) It's hard. No, seriously. If you think any RPG getting made in the modern era is hard (aside from something like, say, Etrian Odyssey), then you haven't played Phantasy Star II yet. The game, especially near the start, is brutal and you need to make sure you save constantly because you can get wiped out easily. When you first start out, you'd better stay close to town. The game also doesn't do a lot of handholding -- there are large, open environments and you're expected to wander around (what we used to call exploring) and find your own way.
3.) It's available for cheaper on the PSP/PS2 Sega Genesis Collection. Though like I commented before, if the VC eventually gets the Master System's Phantasy Star I, I plan on getting all four games on VC, because no prior collection* has had all four of them together.

Worth it? It's the best game ever made, up until March 9th.

When you're just starting Phantasy Star 2 your best bet is start saving up for some ceramic knives(those really expensive ones in the second town's weapon shop). Slap a pair of those on Rudo & Rolf and you should be set until you reach the third town. When you get there you'll be able to get your first good healer and from there you should be able to manage.

Not that it gets easy or anything mind you. There are many situations that will come up and leave you scratching your head wondering what to do. At times your next destination isn't even remotely obvious(for example in order to reach a particular dungeon you need to find a certain island and walk along its mountains until you stumble into it). Since there are only 3 bosses this gives the developers free reign to make the random encounters as difficult as possible. It's most likely that you will not be able to finish a dungeon the first time you enter one. For one these dungeons are actual MAZES(save for maybe PS1 none of the dungeons in the PS series are as challenging) and some of the random encounters are really nasty.

Great game though...even if I've only finished it once.

It's such an awesome game and it's accessible even for non-shooter fans.

A question about Lords of Thunder:
which are the proper armors to get on each stage? The manual doesn't tell it and there aren't faqs about the game on GFaqs!

Personally, I use the Earth Armour on the desert stage and the forest stage. Basically, the Earth Armour is ideal in stages where there are a lot of ground units to deal with. The fireballs launched by the Earth Armour absolutely demolishes enemies on the ground.

For the others, I find that it's pretty much a toss-up between the Fire and Water Armours. I didn't find much of a use for the Wind Armour, though maybe I just didn't use it in the right stages. Fire pierces on the higher power levels, but Water fires at more angles.

I hate that Gaiden III wasn't originally released in Europe. Because of that, NoE wants to release all 3 US versions of the games instead of just putting up Shadow Warriors I and II, so we have to wait for another Hanabi Festival to get II and III, and pay more for them too
