I know i'm going against the grain here by wanting HD-DVD over Blu-Ray.. but I like the rewrite capabilities of HD-DVD and its a lot cheaper.

We won't know how much cheaper anything is until PS3 price is announced, and HD-DVD 360 external drive price is revealed.

But no, it's fine for you supporting an inferior format. That's not why I was laughing.

Rewrite capabilities... i'm not looking for another videogame console. This will be for my PC.

The Samsung/SEGA Saturn 2? :lol

don't joke about that please :lol

the Saturn 2 was something in development between 1994 and 1996 by SEGA and Martin Marietta / Lockheed Martin: either an upgrade to the Saturn or standalone console (or both) that never came to light, as Sega then worked with 3Dfx on BlackBelt, and NEC/Videologic on Dural/Katana/Dreamcast

Blu-ray is rewriteable.

These last few posts have the potential to simmer into more "Bluray vs HD-DVD" crap. Where are we allowed talk about that again? Cos there's evidently some misinformation going around (in some quarters..).

Was there a Blu-ray rewriteable at CES?

Yes.

In fact there are two drives coming for the PC by March. I haven't seen any announced for HD-DVD (except for those built into a HP machine).

http://www.i4u.com/article4797.html
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=28760

The Pioneer will be $995.

Here's a Cyberlink press release about burning to a rewriteable Bluray disc (BD-RE) and playing back in a Panasonic player:

http://www.computingchips.com/new/viewArticle.php?article_id=4296

Panasonic announced media too, including rewritable disks (25GB and 50GB), for March. Various others announced media availability too.

Has there been any news of HDTV pricing with regards to existing tech? For instance, a Sony SXRD set at the $2000 range?

I believe there (earlier in the thread) was announced a new type of DLP that uses lasers. It has x2 HDMI that can do 1080p@$2899. Still pretty high, but its getting down there.

The first link talks about Blu-ray burner pre CES ...theinquirer.net talks about blu-ray PC drives.

But i'm sure down the road both formats will have burners. I can only afford one.... and no, i'm not getting a second Job. :p

I'm probably wrong...but isn't the PS3 going to be the first non-writable BD drive?

any more info on this Power Line video transfer thingamajig?

I like to know about that device that can transfer your cellphone to a WIFI hotspot... I just cant remeber the name of it... :(

Sasmung in fighting talk. They were also suppossed to do Hd-DVD but they dont seem too bothered about that.

SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS North America taunted its rivals in the HD DVD camp at a CES Press conference today. "It says something when they've already dropped the price on an unreleased product," quipped Samsung’s Peter Weedfald to assembled hacks.

Leaning heavily on the fact that Samsung has won more (15 in total) awards than any other exhibitor at the CES show, Samsung swore that it would be first to market with a Blu-ray player this April (2006).

Asked whether he thought that sales of Blu-ray would be impacted by competing technologies, Weedfald replied, "It's up Holywood to help straighten the situation out now."

Samsung claimed that it would have preferred to have a unified format to work with, but the reality was that it had to go to market with a product right now. "Consumers just want the best HD experience," Weedfald suggested. The company insists that "powerful and great studios" will be backing the launch of its own Blu-ray player. µ

Transfer or you mean connect? There are quite afew phones but N80 is probably the best one if you want a real phone. It has media streaming capabilities.

Or is it Skype?

Here's an article from CES about the Pioneer: http://cnet.com.au/desktops/dvdburners/0,39029405,40059416,00.htm. The Panasonic was only announced at CES. Cyberlink were holding demonstrations at CES of BD-RE burning and playback. Nero were doing similar: http://home.businesswire.com/portal...d=news_view&newsId=20060104005008&newsLang=en

I seen it on MSNBC CES coverage. The device is like a hub.. you connect your cellphone to it, which will give you WIFI in your home via cellphone high speed Internet access. They were saying that a lot of cellphones have fast connection now. This would be great for people who live in rural areas as well.

Panny came out on top with the big plasma. 103" a whooping one ich bigger than LG and Samsung.

LG have been doing great in the UK with cheap HDTV plasma.

Do we have the 4GB / 8GB Memory Sticks already in here?

FINALLY! Time to upgrade from my 512MB I got at launch. I didn't want to just get a 1GB and once I waited long enough, 2GB seemed too small.

Just need to wait for the SANDISK versions.

I really dont care either way right now, but after seeing the cases, seeing "HD-DVD" on the shelves will make alot more sense to people than seeing cases with "BLU-RAY DISC".

On another note, damn that 46 inch Bravia sure sounds nice :D

Right now, true, but it's a matter of consumer "education". HD-DVD does have a headstart as far as name recognition goes, but the names behind BD carry a lot of (marketing) clout.

To be honest what they should just say is 15GB a layer vs 25GB. People know the bigger number is better :P It wont be hard convincing people especially when Blu ray will have better specs, more shelf place and clout.

Where do you see info about the 46" Bravia? Amirox has not updated his first post! ;)

KLEE get me SXRD info plzzzzzzzzz thx. :D

Thanks for the SED updates, Klee. I hope Canon and Toshiba can get the sets out in 2006, so i can buy one eventually :lol

Bravia press release: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/01-04-2006/0004242878&EDATE=

Link on Sony site about new Bravia models: http://www.sony.com/NewBravia

And I don't see anything about it in the press release or on Sony's site, but according to Engadget:

Bravia brand is the top-selling flat-panel LCD TV in US. They'll soon be introducing a new 46-inch model at 1080p and 3 new S-series models with integrated ATSC tuners. The world premier of an 82-inch Bravia prototype with wide-color gamma technology is set to deliver more realism via the full range of color.

That's where the consumer responsibility come in to educate themselves... If you are about to spend $1000 on a HD player I sure would do a little research.

15GB a layer vs 25GB is one way to put it.. or you could say is 10 more gigs worth $500. going by the average price announce for both player.

This is source enough.

God damn. Something tells me I need that 8GB stick, but at the same time I really fear the MSRP on it

Thanks for the link. Hopefully this will cause the 2GB sticks to drop in price more rapidly.

Not quite. Your argument is flawed but there is also PS3 which happens to support 1080p and a much larger library of movies.

I dont want it to become a vs thread.. again.

so i'll say our arguments are both flawed.. at least until we know the price of ps3.

Something tells me it will sell more than the Toshiba player and while you're at that. Most Blu ray players with their prices still havent been announced yet. Expect more mainstream pricing later once these players are all out. I expect Companies like Panasonic and Samsung to release the first price competitive players with good features.

Here's hoping those 4 and 8 gig MS Duos are going to sell for significantly less than the 4 GB MS Pro High Speed Sony has on their site for $999...

IMO, the $499 price tag for the Toshiba HD-DVD player is nothing more than a flawed and idiotic last ditch effort to grab market share. The price is still too high to grab any worthwhile portion of the mainstream market, not to mention the serious lack of titles and shelf space it will have compared to Blu-Ray. And it's pointless to offer the lower price to the technophiles, who will buy the players at $1000 no questions asked.

I really wish Toshiba would just drop it. All their doing is dragging this out, and confusing the mainstream in the process. I will willingly go out on a limp and say HD-DVD will not win this format war, and it will not last longer than 18-24 months. It is bested technically and, even more importantly, in terms of content support.

Bah, this format war just ticks me off.
