Official CES 2006 Thread (AGAIN)

i already know what's best, i just want this stupid god damned format war to end. COME ON KISS AND MAKE UP, UNIFORMED FORMAT.

just quit the HDDVD BDR shit.... come on... just buy what you think is best...

like any of you can make a change :lol

What "shit"? People aren't arguing in this thread.

Well judging by the movies it looks like Blu Ray is going to win. 90% support vs Hd-DVD 50% support. Blu ray is the main format. HD-DVD is like a dead horse being flogged.

So no worries.

What format wars? It was over before it started, there's only one definite format for the future. The one and only true successor to dvd, BLU-RAY IS THE FUTURE!!!.

don't want to derail this thread on this subject again but real quick:

the same format war that makes royalty free HD-DVD for VISTA, and makes Microsoft have external HD-DVD, and prompted Sony to start the push toward BRD in PS3 waaaay back when. It brewed for a long time, and they couldn't kiss and make up, and now we're in the result

Do you really think the ADD ON for xbox 360 is going to sell as much as PS3? :lol

Let's hope they[ms] keep up and push it a bit farther, we need the DOJ to do justice with their steak knife once and for all :D

HD-DVD add on won't sell more than 1-2million at absolute best, assuming some divine miracle allowed hd-dvd to prevail, it means zilch. Vista ain't doing much, if they even attempt to hinder blu-ray functionality on the pc side with one of their lewd tactics, only thing they could do that would mean anything actually, the knife's gonna cut deeply ;)

Now we can get back on topic :D

For the last time....

Universal is the only BLU RAY hold out at the moment. Did you see those movies announced for HD DVD earlier by other studios like New Line? They are coming to Blu Ray too.

Yes lets waste another thread on a format war which does not exist.

i don't really think you understand what a format war means...

And I don't think you undestand the massive support Blu Ray has behind them in comparison to HD DVD.

What are you trying to say?

At best HD-DVD is a nuissance if not a waste of time. Blu ray is the one to get for the long term.

Personally i think people trying to argue are wasting time. This format 'war' is exaggerated.

Put it this way, in two years time when there are 30 million Blu Ray players out there (Lets say 25 million of them PS3 systems) and there are under 5 million HD DVD players, who do you think movie studios will support? I would be amazed if HD DVD ends up surpassing more than a couple million.

Miramax-Disney is also on HD-DVD bandwagon.

Is logic to think that Blu Ray will prevail , but of the movies selection announced today the HD-DVD list is quite quite better than Blu Ray one.

Most were expecting a dead for HD-DVD in this CES . They were wrong

guys, a format war just means there are two viable platforms competing for marketshare. PS3 or not, external HD-DVD 360 drive or not, this is the fact at the moment. Until this changes, the format war will exist. There's no doubt BRD has the advantage - how you want to weigh that lead is up to you - but you can't say the format war doesn't exist because you think the competition doesn't have a chance.

HD-DVD is looking mighty attractive.

So, presumably, Lost and all of Disney's Pixar catalog will be appearing exclusively on HD-DVD? Done and done! And I mean done!

At least for me. YMMV.

Yeah and this format battle is about the equivalent of the Indianapolis Colts facing the Houston Texans.

Sorry Matrix. ;)

The point is that movie studios will not be able to ignore the Blu Ray userbase found through PS3 systems sold. If anything you'll get DVD/HD DVD/Blu Ray releases. Blu Ray will not be ignored. HD DVD on the other hand will with various titles.

It´s said to be announced this week , or at least that was said by both Toshiba and MS spokepersons.

They didn´t announce anything for Blu Ray , right?

I didn´t mean exclusively , or at least i don´t know.

I think I read somewhere that there´s some issues about Blu Ray royalties that HD-DVD is free , so some companies like HP rethought about his exclusive support to Blu Ray.

isnt LOTR still HDDVD exclusive??? thats a pretty big userbase

so how will vaio pc's be handled this coming year?? vista?? hddvd drive?? BR drive??

im sure sony will just include a combo drive HDDVD/BR just to cover vista functionality

Hahahaha, no. Disney's catalog is not exclusive to HD-DVD.

Anyway, this is starting to tilt back into familiar territory... so let's take it to the laserdisc thread.

This is what he means by a format war!!! It starts to get really stupid.

"HP are also supporting Blu Ray. More importantly DELL are supporting Blu Ray exclusively. DELL are the largest pc sellers worldwide"

But Intel are HD-DVD

Not everything Blu Ray has been announced yet. Content wise there is no comparison. If you want to ignore many movies/content go for HD-DVD. Mind you not even counting content it will sound like the worse format to the consumer.

And who do you think will be the winner? :lol Betamax had support too as have many other standards. The dominant standard is likely to be blu ray. Arguing baout this is just a waste of time and fills many xbox owners with false hope. Most fo the pro HD-DVD arguments here are based on false information. Thats how strong HD-DVd is.

Not everything for any system have been announced yet. HD-DVD is said to have 200 movies only this year.

If you're a fan of HD-DVD this is great news, HD-DVD will be out before, and is gaining more and more studio support.

But it'll still be on HD-DVD?

Honestly I could care less about exclusives. Just happy to know that there's at least some worthwhile content on HD-DVD if the Strap-On ends up being hell of cheap.

And for the record, as someone who has HD Cable, I'm really only interested in seeing stuff on HD or BRD that's actually been shot on HD Cameras. Film does not look that much better and in many cases (about half of the shots in any given episode of Lost) shows much more film grain and distractibles than I'd like. You can only make film look so good.

I'm surprised no one is talking about that fact in this thread. Everyone's so concerned with which format is better, no one is adressing the Elephant In The Room. 98% of all movies are still shot on film, and that's a wall that Hi-Def is already running smack into, if my HD Cable is any indication. That being said, I can't imagine Sin City looking anything other than flat out stunning in true HD.

OMGOSH, Blaster1X...Future Proof...HD-DVD...Something big...

next person to continue the HD-DVD vs. BRD shit in this thread gets you know what

I don't want to say what the "what" is, but you know

I'm a nice guy! So come on!

In an attempt to return to topic: I think Sony's Reader Thing is very cool, and I would definitely be most interested in purchasing one.

That's fucking awesome! I can read my manga on the go! Hell yes!

This is a practical and more professional device IMO. As sony said this is something many people would like using like Students or avid bookreaders. I would buy this. Any release dates?

I'm conflicted on buying e-book reader thing yet. The current eINK technology only has 4color grayscale or something, and I'm wanting to hold out for when we get color for my comics! Someone brought this up in another thread, and it's a good point!

Ah. So no colour? :( The thing sounds so awesome.

For people who are really interested in the Sony Reader, you might find it useful to join the Librie mailing list where the Reader's predecessor gets discussed.

35mm film is higher resolution than 1080p and there's some debate if HD cameras can capture black levels as well as film. Nobody talks about film being a wall for Hi-Def because it isn't.

And that Sony Reader thing looks awesome.

if sony could get universities to use etextbooks , they could make a fuckton of money cause id much rather buy this then lugging 4-5 books around all day

Deg said:

So far, I don't see anything that indicates color. I have sooooo many e-books (
70,000
), and so this is beyond tempting for me. But I also don't want to have something that's gonna be outdated by its color variant in a few years :(

You're probably right. I just wish they shot Lost a little better.

Yeah i try not to carry books as they are massive.

According to a post on the Librie list, the release date is expected to be March/April, with a price point of $300 to $400 (which is less than the iRex Iliad's expected $500).

Cool. I have to look into this stuff more. This is something i would love to use in the home and in places.

I already have an ereader installed on my phone but its clearly not as nice for reading as this thing would be. But its handy for reading when on a train etc. as people dont take notice of your phone so much :P

Good lord, amirox, that's a hell of a lot of ebooks! Did you make a conscious effort to amass such a collection or is that just your preferred way of reading?

well when i certainly haven't read 70,000. What happened was i was creating a nice organized library in my computer, and then someone offered me like three giga rars filled with like most known e-books. And so I accepted it, because I like to be able to read without having to go back to search for a book. So it's like my own mini-library. When I hear about a good book, I search through it and read it.
