Qualifying gets underway at 3:30pm EST on Speed Channel, with a repeat showing at 1:30am EST. Race starts at 12:30pm tomorrow.

Couple more notes...Button's staying with BAR (probably move to Williams in '06), and the British GP at last word will probably be dropped (dumb fucks).

barrichelo on pole, its been a good weekend for him, schumi had a bad crash in 2nd practice, looks like his fault. Dream race if rubens wins.

NEW QUALIFYING FORMAT CONFIRMED
Last Updated: Sunday, 24, October, 2004, 00:17

Formula 1 will have a new qualifying format next season, it has been confirmed.

The grid will now be decided by the aggregate of a driver's times from two single-lap sessions, due to take place on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The Saturday session, with cars going out in the order in which they finished the previous race, will see cars running light on fuel.

However, drivers will have to carry their race fuel in the Sunday morning session.

BAR team boss David Richards said: "On the Saturday you will see who is the fastest car on that particular track.

"I think it adds another dimension to Sunday morning. It will be worth getting to there early."

I don't watch champ cars ofthen, I only watch it when it's on the Gold Coast, but i like it how if you get pole in qualy1 you're locked onto the front row. I reckon that's something that f1 need to do, so that they'll really be trying in qualy1. I don't like the engine change as well :\ V8... just doesn't sound exotic and fast as a v8... although i'm aware that i'd never tell the difference when watching the cars.

I get a kick out of seeing races at the Australian courses. I watched about half of that Champ Car race earlier, and it looked like it would be fun as hell to race on. Loved the squeeze play Paul Tracy pulled on Sebastian Bourdeas...PT has some massive rocks.

New qualies format blows. The aggregate sounded great when it was two 25 minute sessions. This two single-lap bullshit spread over two days does NOTHING. Why are they calling it new when it's just the same stupid system we have now, except they've moved Q2 to Sunday. It was a two-day affair last year with Q1 on Fri and Q2 on Sat. So they think putting Q1 on Sat and Q2 on Sun constitutes a new system? And why do the aggregate of single-lap qualies? The first person out in each session always gets the raw end of the stick. This doesn't show who's fastest at anything. The first two or three cars will never show their full speed since they're gonna be track sweeping. When the fuck did the attitude at the FIA turn from encouraging real competition and turning it into this Mickey Mouse bullshit? Are they so desperate to fake competition that they'll hijack qualies forever? Pole has lost all meaning. It doesn't determine who's fastest over a lap anymore. Fucking weaksauce. Someone like Michael is gonna be screwed even more now b/c he'll have to do a lot of track sweeping in Q1, and then in Q2, he could be screwed over by slim time margins. You could have someone like Kimi start last in Q1 due to an engine failure in the previous weekend, so he'll post a top time in Q1, and then eventhough Michael has outdriven him in Q2 to get a better time, Kimi will get pole b/c he'll enjoy an artificially high margin over Schuey due to Michael losing an extra tenth of two sweeping the track in Q1. FUCK YOU MAX, this is bullshit.

I'm seriously considering not watching F1 in the future. I'll watch until Michael retires, but that's it I think. I don't like where the sport is going. V8s and keeping the lame qualies session, and kicking great tracks like Silverstone off the schedule, but keeping absolute trash like Magny-Bore and Hungary and Shlockenheim...Mickey fucking Mouse. My proposal:

1) Aggregate times from two 25-minutes free-for-alls. 6 laps per session, give the fucking fans what they're paying for, car lapping the track. I don't know if Max or Bernie watch the snoozefest they're putting on each week, but single-lap qualies blow. We used to get 4 runs at full-tilt for our tv time, now we get one half-assed lap and one fast, but conservative one. Next year, we'll get two fast, but conservative ones. This is not entertainment.

2) V8s to V12s again. Let the teams choose the engine layout. Maybe Ferrari will go back to the ballsy V12s again with that beautiful engine note. :) Some will choose the lightweight V8s, especially for tight tracks like Monaco. Give us some variety, that will produce better competition than these lame-ass rules. How about a turbo option again? Are turbos gonna be removed from all forms of racing? Why? Turbo tech is still a huge part of the street. F1 has so much to offer on the R&D side for turbos, and who doesn't love the sound of the blowoff valve whistling away on the downshifts? I love the sound of a turbo engine more than anything else. It's like a jet fighter. Max and Bernie are trying to force spec engines. The teams don't seem to mind, but it's reducing a lot of interest for gearheads like me. We have V8s in street cars and in like every North American series. Why does the FIA want to homogenize F1? I want to see the pinnacle of motorsport, not cars with street engines in them.

The other rules I'm fine with. I'm over the lame single-tyre ruling. I thought it was against the drive for safety, honestly. With all the delams the past two years, and with the regularity of punctures, I think it's pointless to limit the teams to a single tire. Max is forcing these knee-jerk rule changes in there with little thought behind it IMO. So tires are the big performance area now, but it's b/c of the previous rules changes to reduce aero grip. They raised the front wing and did other body changes back in like 01/02 and suprise, suprise, I've said it before and I'll say it again, these cars have mechanical grip in spades. So now they want to fuck with the tires? So that means it'll lead to new improvements in other areas. Are we gonna ban engine mapping b/c it can be used for traction control? What about banning carbon brakes, which are a MASSIVE problem for overtaking? Why hasn't that changed? So the cars will corner slower, big fucking deal. No one can setup a pass when they're all scrubbing hundreds of mph in a few seconds. These rules are window dressing to cover up a glaring problem with F1. The tracks are becoming more sterile, the race weekend has become less interesting with practice and qualies being almost a non-event now, and the races blow b/c overtaking is still far too difficult. At least we had some tracks like Silverstone that overcame the deficiencies in the formula through good old-fashioned track design. Ooops, not enough luxury boxes to help line Bernie's coffers. Roll on GPWC. I hope Bernie and F1 eat shit in 06 when Honda, BMW and Mercedes pullout. Then in 07 when the Concorde Agreement ends and the other manufacturers leave and start up the GPWC. They should take note, b/c I think this is how CART died. Ill-conceived engine changes are a sure way of shitcanning a series. PEACE.

EDIT: Congrats Rubens on a great pole. I hope he wins. Sorry about my bitterness, but I've had major problems with the FIA and their stupid rules changes since 2003. The rules book stayed so consistent from 97-02, then Ferrari dominates one fucking season and it's knee-jerk time. The last time before that they knee-jerked, we got grooved tires, and that created a huge uproar. :? I wish they'd stop fucking with a formula that wasn't really broken. Oh yeah, and hopefully Michael can put in an entertaining drive this weekend. Actually, hopefully it rains. That will ensure Rubens a great win, and it should help Michael move through the field and hopefully challenge and race Rubens at the front. Otherwise, I don't care if Michael even gets a podium, this weekend belongs to Rubhino. :)

*grumble grumble*

Good win by Montoya. Drove well all day, wet or dry. I love the fist pump all down the final straight. He deserved it today. :) Kimi drove a strong second, but got a taste of next year's battle. Should be fun watching them go at it, although I still tip Kimi to have the advantage. Good podium for Rubens, but he had to be the saddest man on earth today. Really disappointed. Michael spun early and that was the end of it. Got stuck behind Alonso when he could have been putting in hot laps as a result, and lost any chance of the podium. He would have beaten Rubens today. He drives perfectly to the championship, and then almost turns into a rookie for the rest of the season. Interlagos has a way of making him look amateurish sometimes in the wet I guess.

*sigh* The end of an ok season. Apart from Michael blowing the championship apart, it's been competitive in a lot of races. It did suck horribly in the first half of the season though. Some of those races need to be dumped from the calendar, like Imola. I'm really not excited by the continued changes the FIA keeps implementing. Next year looks like it might be one of the last ones I watch. Unless the on-track action improves, I'm not gonna waste my time much longer. Hopefully next year will be better than this one. Last year wasn't very good either. Matter of fact, 2000 might be the last good season. Time to focus on football and prep for hoops. PEACE.

Meh, didn't even watch the race today. I blame Ferrari more than anyone for the present state of F1. When other teams dominated at least you had the driver battles like Prost vs Senna at Mclaren. Barrichello is completely subservient to Schumacher, if Montoya was his teammate there'd be plenty of fireworks.

You assume it's by choice and that Michael isn't just outrunning him. He's beaten all his teammates. Look at the average margin between him and all his teammates he's ever had. Rubens has been the closest of all of them save for maybe Piquet. When they're close, they don't race, but it's not like that's most of the season. They've only been close enough to battle less than a handful of times this year. The rest of the races, either Michael or Rubens was way in front of the other. We've had seasons where one team dominated and the season was still better, and it wasn't b/c of one team having its drivers battle. McLaren dominated in 1998, and it was a better season b/c at least Michael stepped up and took a challenge to them. Williams dominated in 1996, and it was still interesting then just for all the other cars that challenged. I think there's a lot of parity in the field besides the red cars, but that still hasn't made the season enjoyable. There's just not a lot of overtaking, so we have what we had today, which is 4 cars within 2 seconds of each other running around in a procession with no real chance to pass. Ralf did get around Sato, but only when Sato made a failed try at Alonso.

Anyway, you missed an interesting race today, but it was more for the chaos that ensues with variable weather conditions. Some good battles, but once the track dried out, overtaking was at a premium. Interlagos sucks on many levels. PEACE.

Somewhat interesting race , especially the first 5 laps thanks to the rain.

As a rule, the FIA should just keep the circuit wet the entire race. Just might make F1 entertaining to watch again.

I thought last season was fantastic myself. The second half of this season wasn't too bad either...I think the other teams got a lot closer to Ferrari. Problem is they were so far out in front in the first half of the season, both championships were done by May.

Anyway, just saw the race a few hours ago...it was pretty cool seeing future teamates battling. Some seem to think that neither guy is very good at working with the crew to set up a car, but I've heard that Kimi at least is a lot better at it then the rep suggests. Rubes just can't catch a break at Brazil, but at least he finished.

The FIA needs an implosion. They've fucked over the WRC with their stupid new rules, and now they're looking to fuck over F1. I don't blame Ferrari for not voting.
