I have this problem multibooting 98, XP, 7, and Debian. The problem was there before I added 7.

3.0Ghz on a Q6600 isn't going to damage anything unless you take the voltage too high which I doubt. You can OC those to 3.0 on stock voltage alone, plus if you fried your CPU it would never boot. Failed overclocks also usually bring up an error screen during bootup, not a failure to get to the POST screen.

If I had to guess something i'd try to borrow someone elses PSU and test that. Remove the GPU, extra HDD, ODD, all but one stick of ram and try booting it up barebones and work up from there.

Any problem with sticking 4x2GB of these memory sticks NewEgg into a Gigabyte P55A 1156 Board?

Alternatively, I could opt for the 1600 RAM Here

I was going to get 7-7-7-21 ram, but the price differential with this stuff on sale is too big I think.

Also, I'm a Bing Cashback n00b. I've used it on eBay where I had to pay with Paypal. Do I have to pay with Paypal to get my Newegg Bing Cashback or can I just use normal payment methods?

Whats the skinny on this:-

I've got a 9600 GT at the moment. Runs L4D2 great with max on nearly everything at 1600x1280 but Resident Evil 5 is unplayable - literally drops to around 5 fps on some scenes. Have a Athlon 64 X2 3800 which I know is creaking now, but I don't want to upgrade the main processor / memory for at least another year. This card a worthy upgrade / suitable choice?

Reckon you might be CPU bound there tbh. Try OCing that processor first. Update your drivers as well, RE5 shouldn't be performing like that. Be sure to use the DX10 executable with Nvidia hardware.

Finally purchased the PC last night, waited for a few of the BF deals which would up saving around $200. There is about $100 in rebates for me to send in and I also got $120 for the bing cashback. Even got the price low enough that I was able to throw in a 2TB drive for myself :lol

790X? That won't have integrated graphics, so you'll still need a dicrete GPU. 4670 is a good fit.

Yeah, cut back on the nearly 400$ in HDD and buy a GPU instead. I'd ditch the 2TB and SSD and stick with a single 1 TB drive until SDD's get reasonable. Or stick with the 640GB and buy a 5850 and still be within your price (although the 58** are likely to come down a lot after nVidia's next cards come out).

Looking at the SSD again that is disgustingly expensive, even for todays market. That's over 5$/GB where most SSD are sitting more at the 3-3.5$/GB

Edit: I just noticed you already sent the order. Didn't mean to rain on your parade but it's not too late to try to change things.

advice on the best general purpose hard drive for a new system? the spinpoint f3 1tb looks perfect, but it's seeming increasingly unlikely i'll be able to find one for sale anywhere in canada.

seagate 7200-series and western digital caviar blacks seem the obvious choices? can i do a lot better if i'm willing to spend more? (the local b&m was very keen to sell me on a velociraptor, but they don't seem much faster anymore and are 1/3 size for 3x cost).

Yeah, the 640GB or 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black is what you should get. NCIX's Black Friday sale is tonight. Currently, this is the lowest price (price match it) for the 640GB: http://www.onhop.ca/catalog/product/10295926

It's your CPU, definitely. The 9600GT is more than enough for RE5 at that res. I would try overclocking to see if you can get more value from it before upgrading.

yeah... figured, though sometimes there's something slick you've never heard of. i've got a 70GB western digital in my current machine, and it's been a trooper for probably seven years.

would have liked the big platters of the f3 though. anecdotally it seems like a quieter drive than the wd blacks (i'm trying to keep noise down as much as possible as i'll be streaming media from this system (also: my current pc noise level is driving me a bit nuts)).

was hoping to build this weekend, but my 5850 is somewhere in transit between LA and TO and may be caught in thanksgiving slowdowns (i'm very happy i have a 5850 being shipped however, so perhaps it's appropriate).

thanks.

Come on. They have .12 series for whole year.
And why anyone would take WD Black when you could get superior Samsung F3?

I'm pretty sure Dolphin and PCSX2 like Intel processors better than AMD.

Really? Where did you hear this from?

Also, can anyone tell me if there's any chance I can use my 4GB of DDR2 RAM in a new motherboard? How about my old sound car and 500GB HD that came with my three year old Dell desktop?

So the Asus Eee PC 1201N is coming out in several days, I was wondering if anyone here has experience with the dual-core N330/ION combo. Would I be realistic to expect it to perform similarly to my spare computer which is a athlon 64 3000+ with a 6800GT when playing valve games? (i can get solid framerates on that machine if the settings are low)

Any good deals lately on AMD CPUs? Specifically, the quad core ones (3.0+ Ghz)? I really need to rid myself of my current one. 2.2Ghz with 4GB worth of ram and a 9800GT can only get you so far...

Pick up the 965 BE (140W) because they are being cleared out now to make room for the new and slightly improved 125W revision.

I'm in Canada. If you've got more online retailers to provide, that would be awesome.

That's the cheapest, just go on shopbot.ca and search for phenom II 965. But you should definitely wait a few hours and see if there are and good black friday deals. (i'll be looking around myself on ncix in 40 minutes)

I'll probably do the same. Because I don't think it gets any lower than that price point.

I have a 640 WD Black and 500GB Seagate 7200.12 and both are phenomenal drives. The WD is my Windows 7 OS drive due to its access time and burst rates. The Seagate beats it in overall Read/Write speed.

Anyone know how that cooling brick fares? If it's still in stock in the morning I might nab it, but I've seen some reviews give it poor ratings online.

Eh, on second thought... wouldn't that card require a full liquid cooling system? I'm not equipped for it if that's the case.

I have a Zotac ION ITX-A with 4GB ram and it does pretty well in the gaming department.
It manages to play Trine at 1024x768 pretty fluently
Torchlight runs just fine too (in non-netbook mode), but the loading times were abysmal (patch wasn't out yet when I tried it)
Tales from Monkey Island is playable but not very fluent (toning down the detail helps a bit, but not enough)

Eh, DVD drive seems a little pricey.

Get this RAM instead:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231275&Tpk=20-231-275

I was a little harsh on the GPU I guess, you'll still be able to run pretty much any game, its just really bad bang for buck, and a bad choice for a gamer (or anyone really). Keep resolutions well down and never use AA and you should be alright. If you ever plan to use it for gaming (its really not that far off from eing a nice little gaming rig), do a stock volts OC to 3.2ghz on that processor (its a free upgrade and worth doing) and slam in a $100 GPU, a 4770 would probably be your best bet.

Like most in here, I'm putting together a Black Friday PC :)

Right now I'm trying to decide which case to get, I'm looking for easy access (I'm not a seasoned pro so I'd appreciate it if putting the PC together to be relatively hassle free). Here's what I'm looking at:

NZXT LEXA BlackLine $109. A bit pricey, but I'm willing to spend a bit more on a nice Case, Mobo and PSU combo.

RAIDMAX SMILODON $39.99. Not pretty, but I like that this one uses screwless driver bays.

COOLER MASTER HAF 922 $59.98. It's got good reviews.

Any thoughts? Other recommendations?

It's only about $15 more and the reviews I'm reading make it seem like the Asus is great for gaming with 2ms response time. Plus I'm a bigger fan of Asus than Acer.

Any reason I should go for the Acer or something else in that price range?

Yes I am at 3.0 ghz with stock voltage. Very stable OC.

I do have an extra PSU sitting in my basement. It is a 500 watt coolermaster I'll probably give that a shot with my old 9600 GT, since I won't be able to use it with my 5850. Come to think of it I did do a firmware update to the 5850 a few days before the issue started. Does anyone think that may be the cause? Though that seems doubtful.

I just hate having to work through all the components to isolate the issue. But I gotta do what I gotta do I guess. For now I've just been leaving it on. But that can't be good for the life of the machine.

Failing to POST is in indicative of hardware problems, bad drivers could only mess up your system after the drivers are loaded in windows. Try cycling through the components and removing the ones that aren't vital. If that doesn't work something is wrong with the motherboard or CPU. If you have another hard drive test that out even if it's not bootable, just to see if it will post. It's possible that any hardware connected can cause POST problems if there is a bad power connection on it. This is about all you can do at this point.

I have a HDD that only shows up half the time but haven't been able to figure it out so I just put up with it.

Considering your screen refreshes at best every 13.7ms you won't notice the difference in response time between the two.

Not looking to build a new PC yet but would like to upgrade slightly so I can play Dragon Age, L4D2, Borderlands smoothly.

Here's what I got:

600w Rosewill PSU
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ @ 2100 MHz
3GB DDR2 RAM
GeForce 8600 GT
Win 7

I'm hoping I could just upgrade the vid card for cheap and make it to late spring before I build an entirely new PC. Would 1-2GB more ram be worth it? I'm not looking to spend too much as I'd like to build a new PC in late spring. Was thinking about grabbing this card

It's not the response time of the Asus, it's to 0 input delay. Tested and now used as Evo's official displays.

I'm not a huge fan of the colours though.

Anyone have direct experience with cyberpowerpc? Reviews seem very mixed and their repairs process sounds godawful which negates my reason to buy a built system... still, would appreciate any input. IBP seems to have raised all prices and then are now claiming things are on sale overall. The PC I priced out the other day and as much or more today if you can believe it.

Is that a DDR2 8600gt? If so, you should get roughly double the framerates so probably not a bad option considering the price. You really should look into OCing that CPU some as well, even a bump to 2.4-2.6ghz with stock cooling will make all the difference in some games, well worth doing. Should breath a little more life into it.

If its a DDR3 8600GT, then its probably not worth bothering with.

Brain_stew: Is it worth it to get a P55A board if the socket connection is still a Foxconn? That is my only reason for getting the A version. Otherwise I'll go with a cheaper board.

Also, I'm concerned that the USB 3.0 channel will drag down my video card performance. I think I was able to snag a XFX 5870 from Newegg just now.

Also: Any problem with putting 8GB of this memory in a board?

Thanks for the continued help :)

Thanks for the continued help :)

I'd probably lean towards no, depends if faster SATA and USB 3.0 are a big deal to you of course, the implementation of USB 3.0 seems a little less than ideal though, like you say, so I'd probably be hesitant. To me, personally, ensuring I get a board without a Foxconn socket would be my number one priority, supplementary features would take a back role.

8GB of that memory should work just fine, its the best value RAM available atm, G.Skill have a great return policy as well.

Picked up a AMD Phenom ii x4 and a Radeon 4770, based on the recommendations in this thread. Should work with my AM2 motherboard, and be a step up from my AMD Athlon 64 x2 1.9 Ghz and Geforce 7900GS. Thanks for all the tips & recommendations.
