So my copy of SL wont be here until next week because i wanted to wait for the word on the Up-To-Date discs. i see that people uploaded SL on torrent sites, but its dual layer size. if i just mount it on my mac without burning it will it install? i want SL now...

You can't use the operating system's services while it's installing itself.

Why don't you buy an external drive? They're ridiculously cheap.

I have an external drive, but I travel... this MBP is my workhorse. And my gamehorse. WoW is the main culprit of the HD being full :lol

Second, part of the disk "savings" everyone is reporting is exaggerated because the size of a Gigabyte was reduced in SL. So you have more space, but your hard drive has more total capacity, and is roughly the same % full (less 5 or 6 gigs). So I "recovered" 9GB, but my drive grew by 16GB in perceived capacity.

GB inflation, folks.

This doesn't really answer my question. First you say due to how the GB is calculated the "gains" are misleading, but then you say you really did gain 9GB, if the space is calculated the old way.

And besides, my Q is whether I'll still receive these gains if I install over Leopard, rather than doing a clean install (which is not an option).

Even though this is treading in illegal territory, I'll say Google for burn dmg to hard drive. But only if you have a clean HD or partition free.

And now I'll leave that conversation.

dammit, dont want to waste a DL DVD. guess ill have to wait a week for my copy. unless, is there a way to get it in store at the 10$ price? i knew i should have ordered it earlier.

I have only just realised the amount of space which printer drivers are taking up on 10.5. When I upgrade to Sl, if I disable all of the useless drivers, will they be deleted from the OS or will I have to do it manually.

Is there any chance of my Bootcamp partition being affected by this update? I'm guessing not, but still, I want to be sure that I don't have to backup stuff from there as well.

Do I need to wipe my system before I install, or re-install all my programs? I've never done this before... I will, of course, back up all my files, but is it better to wipe everything and install fresh, or can you just install over Tiger/Leopard?
I'm just doing an upgrade. As far as I understand it's just replacing files more or less. A clean install will simply have you scrambling for all your software keys, and setting up apps how you like them.

honestly what other use does a DL DVD have anyway?

Right click -> show package contents on the 3.0 installer. Go down to resources and install the mpkg.
I did that and it still didn't work properly after installing. I think I just need to wait and hope they put out a newer version soon.

I commented earlier that 64 bit firefox might be ages away but it looks like I was being pessimistic (or optimistic depending on how you feel about input managers). There may be 64 bit builds of firefox in development relatively soon

http://boomswaggerboom.wordpress.com/2009/08/27/status-update-geckofirefox-for-64-bit-mac-os-x/

Since Mac OS X 10.6 is coming out tomorrow I thought I’d give an update on 64-bit Gecko for Mac OS X. Progress is tracked on Mozilla bug 468509.

We’re very close to having running builds. We still need to replace some old API usage related to complex text input and print dialogs, but aside from that I do not know of any other major work items. We have come a long way and we will have builds within a month. As soon as we can produce them we’ll start working on getting a 64-bit Mac OS X 10.6 tinderbox set up to produce nightly builds.

We have not made any decisions about shipping an officially supported 64-bit build for Mac OS X. I suspect at some point we will make the decision to remove the PPC architecture from our universal binary and replace it with x86-64 but like I said, we have not made any decisions yet.

Installed a few hours ago, been messing around.

Things certainly start faster, but for whatever reason, my computer is chugging a little bit more than usual. Granted, I have upwards of five programs running, and 20+ tabs in Firefox, but it's never broken a sweat before.

Not sure if I'm liking that part, too much. :/

What's not working? The expose shortcuts? I just assigned key combinations like F9 for 'all windows' in LCC to get that to work.

Hmm so it archive and installs automatically now? Just finished. Everything is running smoothly. My topbar indicators have disappeared however.

I noticed that I had less free RAM than I normally do during average processes. I normally have at least 512 MB free, now I have between 180-260 MB free. If anyone's considering getting more RAM, it sure as hell probably wouldn't hurt. I know I'm gonna pick up some when I get my car back.

FWIW, I use a VX Revolution on my MacBook and I've always hated Logitech's OSX software so I use USB Overdrive instead. It basically enables all the functionality of Logitech Control Center without the kludgeyness.

Just installed a few hours ago and here are my two cents...

Pros:
- start-up is faster
- shut-down is faster
- apple applications (mail, ical, quicktime etc.) start faster

Cons:
- for the same amount of processes more RAM is needed with snow leopard
- firefox is kinda screwing around (was way better under leopard)
- changing spaces is kinda laggy at times (wasn't before)

Firefox is definately annoying me and the kinda laggy spaces change too. I was sure I'm entering some beta testing here, but then again everybody knew, that this GM is still buggy, so let's see what will happen in the future with let's say 10.6.1.

Got a large enough thumb drive you're not using? Disk Utility can "burn" the dmg to your drive and let you boot from it to install.

You can 'restore' a dmg to an external drive and install from there. Use the restore tab in Disk Utility. It won't erase your HDD.

I just installed it and immediately tested Plex. No problems whatsoever.

I hope it was an isolated case with the other poster, good to hear its working. Picking up a mac mini today and installing Plex with Snow Leopard hopefully everything works solid

How do you get Safari to autocorrect as you type? I've turned it on in Mail (Spelling > Correct Spelling automatically), but Safari doesn't have same option?

like what?

Starting Plex insted of Front Row doesn't work. Every time I press the menu button FR start or quits while Pex is running. basically you can't use it.

I could delete Front Row but that would be kinda stupid. Is thee a way to deactivate FR for good?

Strange, iStat worked fine on one of the last development builds (before GM). Im installing SL onto my main Mac Pro right now, otherwise Id try it myself. Well, I guess I could install iStat onto this Macbook Pro, but Im too lazy :p

Hi guys, rocking 10.6!

As a stickler for colour control, I've been toying around with colour profiles.

Holy crap! The colours are much more accurate in the new profile. Nothing to do with the gamma. Before, colours were too green, particularly in my background, which is a sepia image. I knew this, because using a display profiler, colours looked better on a 6500K calibrated profile, while it was the same when I set it to native. Too bad the 6500K made a lot of the greys a bit too pink.

In short, under 10.5, the old profile looked too green, which matched a native calibrated profile.

In 10.6, the new profile AND the old profile look much closer to my 6500K profile, while my native remains too green. Something about the way 10.6 handles the profiles is much closer to accurate - and without the nasty pinks.

Also the new spelling correction is awesome. I think this will make me much lazier, however. I might turn it off. Oh, and you can check American Australian, British AND Canadian English all on.

Woot! <(doesn't like that).

I've had this same problem through the testing versions. Remotes don't only work for the program in focus anymore. Front Row and iTunes keep interfering with everything else.

The other problem is that even if FR didn interfere I'd still get the volume hud when I press up or down.

And people having slowness issues are probably running across mdworker reindexing all of your files. Leave the mac running for an hour or so and it should be done (I noticed a boost right away after it had finished working).

incompatibility report:

Medialink from Nullriver doesn't work. can't stream video or music to my PS3. :(

Connect360 works just fine but I preferred watching stuff on the PS3. I already emailed Nullriver. hopefully there's an update soon.

I also had to re-add my wifi enabled printer/scanner but that took less than a minute and it works just as well as before.

also, I was wrong before about being done with 10.6 in under an hour. one reason: services

I've already set up services to add spotlight comments to batches of files and for image type changes and bulk renaming. all available in a context menu.

good stuff

Try the Mac version of PS3 Media Server (works for both 360 and PS3). It should be on their forums. Google it. I've only used the Windows version so I dunno how good the Mac side is. Love the program though.

No issues with my remote here. Works fine as usual.

I use that and it does still work with snow leopard. Good stuff.

Well, I did a fresh install and it feels good:D. 120GB HDD, 104.92GB free. Luckily I have a 500GB external hard drive:D.

No his issue was with Plex. Using the remote to control Plex is basically not possible anymore. I don't use my remote to use Plex but I know people that do, hopefully there is a fix by either Apple or Plex sooner or later.

Ah sorry, missed that. And yes, a clean install without leopard is possible.

Anyone else notice that when you reboot your volume gets muted? Ie I have volume at full and I shut down, upon restart the volume is all the way down.

Did you not see my post? You can "burn" the DMG onto an empty HD or partition. It even installs faster.

Got my copy installed after some trouble with overheating. My poor broken Mac has a broken fan controller and overheats. It shut down twice during the install. Fortunately OS X automatically recovers from a botched install when that happens. After three tries I finally got it installed. I guess I'm taking this thing to the shop on Monday.

sweet. I just got it working a few minutes ago.

Mac version isn't exactly Mac-like (it's a java program, after all) but it gets the job done.

thanks for the heads up.

I prefer Rivet myself. One license gets you both Xbox and PS3 support.

But it too is broken on Snow Leopard. I plan on doing away with console playback anyway when I get a new mini. I'm tired of error codes "This video may be incompatible" messages. Fuck that shit. Give me an actual OS that can install plugins and playback anything you want.

Apple still hasn't even shipped my $9 up-to-date disk, and they are sending it standard shipping too so it'll be a few days at least. I had thought it would be delivered on release day, but I guess not.

Oh well, bought an upgrade copy today anyway. Time to install it on all my Macs.
