I find it odd that the copy I got doesn't identify itself as an upgrade disc. Does everyone literally get the same thing regardless of what they are paying for?

Yep. Honor system FTW.

Unlike MS, making money off OS releases is simply icing on Apple's proverbial cake. They have more to lose by pissing off customers than they have to gain from OS revenue.

It maximizes customer satisfaction and it keeps the install base current. Apple knows full well that getting in an arms race with the 1% that would pirate or otherwise misappropriate the license wouldn't serve their interests

Do you still get the added hard drive space if you DON'T do a clean install, and instead just install over leopard?

My MBP HD is full (3GB left) and the main reason I'm considering snow leopard is for the additional HD space, as sad as that is. But I can't do a clean install...
Why don't you buy an external drive? They're ridiculously cheap.

BestBuy is selling 10.6 for $25 with free shipping, and I got a $5 coupon the other day, so I just ordered Snow Leopard for $21.45 :D :D :D

I'm still running Tiger on my 2.16GHz Intel iMac G5, but I've seen multiple sources say that you can upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard with no problems. Wee!

This'll be the first time I've ever upgraded the OS on a Mac computer. Anybody have any tips or recommendations?

Yeah, but that the Google Mobile Sync Exchange for iPhone doesn't work in Snow Leopard is depressing. Wish I could just have iPhone+Mac+Google heaven.

You need 5GB to install, as it copies the disc to your drive before doing anything else.

Second, part of the disk "savings" everyone is reporting is exaggerated because the size of a Gigabyte was reduced in SL. So you have more space, but your hard drive has more total capacity, and is roughly the same % full (less 5 or 6 gigs). So I "recovered" 9GB, but my drive grew by 16GB in perceived capacity.

GB inflation, folks.

No issues here.

:lol, iCal has inexplicably two Help menu items. One normal, one with just 'iCal Help'. Nice screw-up there.

In other news, I like the new screenshot file naming scheme. "Screen shot 2009-08-28 at 4.31.49 PM.png" No more overwriting "Picture 1.png" in my "junk" folder.

Are you sure you have Snow Leopard installed? Your multiclutch, quicksilver, and help menus are the only ones that work.

This is due to having the debug menu enabled. It did this in leopard too :p

Weird thing I've noticed so far: In spotlight, none of the 64 bit apps will load up if you search for their name.
Tried with both Safari and QT and they both were found and launched fine.

...wtf is up with all these inconsistent installs?

It's hard to say because everyone seems to be having different results after the update (even with your iCal thing aside). Really weird.

I almost don't care about anything else in Snow Leopard. I'm getting so pissed off having to actually use keyboard buttons to navigate Safari. My MultiClutch setup was beyond amazing.

This is a huge step backwards, like installing a BlackBerry keyboard on the bottom of my iPhone.

Only program so far not working for me is Logitech Control Center. I can install the previous version no problem, but it is missing some of the newer functions. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

The constant intonation that Apple is an altruistic company that is rooted in corporate noblesse oblige.
Doesn't change the fact that what I said it true.

Apple requires no serial numbers and has one version for both the full and upgrade installs. (As well as both family packs)

Microsoft requires unique serial numbers and has a dozen different versions with differing feature sets that all cost different prices.

This is fact. Not fanboyism. :lol

What newer functions? I'm using 2.6 because 3.0 stops working. What does 3.0 have? At least for my MX1000?

:lol I know what you mean.

Setting up FireFox with Clutch and dropping an OSX'y theme to it made it acceptable in the meantime.

I have my copy in my grubby mitts.

Wish me luck, see you on the other side.

Int eh meantime, if anyone can give me guidance regarding bootstrapping 64-bit fink and whehter it's safe (or necessary or even recommended) to install x11 2.4 over the SL version, that would be great.

Is there such a thing as 64-bit x11?

Is this something that multiclutch can override with an update? I'm also disappointed that my safari gestures dont work...super efficiency gone...:lol

Trust me, it is. In fact it's the obnoxious fanboyism trying to masquerade as profound.

Install iWork and get back to me.

Why would I want to install iWork? I don't even use Office. I don't have any need for programs like that. And I'm not even saying Apple is perfect. I am simply saying APPLE TRUSTS PEOPLE MORE THAN MICROSOFT. There is no way anyone can honestly debate that. Serial codes is a sign of mistrust. It is the programmer saying "We need to make sure no one pirates this, so we have to suspect everybody." It's pretty much guilty until you prove you aren't a pirate. Whereas with Apple it's more innocent until you prove you are a pirate in which case we will come down on you hard when we find you, if we even care enough to track you down.

You want obnoxious? I'll give you obnoxious!

I. LOVE. THIS. COMPANY!!!

[Runs around like Steve Ballmer for an hour before running out of breath and falling to the floor. Then installs Snow Leopard.]

:p

That's me pretending to be some famous guy who works for Microsoft.

Can we get back to talking about Snow Leopard now?

The process begins :lol Starting to back up my laptop while I head out to buy the Family Pack. Probably gonna do a clean install (wipe the HD via the Disk Utility on the instal DVD) & transfer everything back via Migration Utility. My local Apple Store still has "tons of copies" :D

Excuse me if I don't use the correct terms, but there is the expose I believe and a few other options. Like clearing the screen and showing all of the windows. I have the MX Revoultion and I use the side wheel for some of that stuff.

Right click -> show package contents on the 3.0 installer. Go down to resources and install the mpkg.

Is Logitech Control Center still an input manager hack? That could be the problem, if so.

Apple doesn't need to make money off their OS, Microsoft depends on it since they're not a hardware company. That's the difference, and little more. I fail to see it as 'trust' issue considering how Apple will put massive limits in place when it helps their revenue stream (preventing sideloading tracks from a friend's itunes, closed wall approach with iphone apps, etc.).

Yes, your argument really is that obnoxious.

Perfectly normal. It's 20 for me. At least with the GM from before. I will be timing it this time too.

Oh, and I'm done, so stop.

Really? The last GM didn't. Guess I'll find out when CCC is done making a final backup before I do this. (Just in case I have to reformat or do something else to get it to install. Someone said if SL is already installed and working fine it won't even let you reinstall.)

Well they renamed the screenshot convention. No longer is it "Picture X.png" it's a full fucking timestamp like: "Screen shot 2009-08-28 at 4.11.55 PM.png"

Do I need to wipe my system before I install, or re-install all my programs? I've never done this before... I will, of course, back up all my files, but is it better to wipe everything and install fresh, or can you just install over Tiger/Leopard?

Go forth and upgrade.

I upgraded my 3 machines at home today and all went off without a hitch.

alright 10.6 is installed, baby!

woo hoo!

set up my work exchange account. fantastic!

text correction is doing its thang.

snappy finder is snappy.

it's all good.

edit: @scorcho. only iWork '08 had a serial. the new iWork 09 dispensed with it. Apple must've figured it wasn't worth the hassle.

Actually, Iwork doesn't require a serial. I think that was only for those who downloaded the demo version and were upgrading to full.

But yeah it's not REALLY an honour system. A true honour system would just have software for free and ask you to pay. ;p

One of my favorite new features. No more having to manually rename picture 1.png when I try to throw it into my Downloads folder.

Just do the normal upgrade. Reformatting is a waste of time.

They wanted to make people know the new QT was new and fresh. So they gave it the X treatment.

Frankly, they still need to work on it. Make it more like the older QT's and less like iMovie HD... or whichever one was the crappy one that was rewritten but lacked every single feature that made iMovie iMovie.

The Gamma is different. It's a 2.2 now in SL.
