I don't think I like the new expose. There's so much wasted space, why does it make the pictures so small?

Also it seems like the cpu temperature bounces around more and is generally a couple degrees higher.

Annnnd, I can't get rid of the istat menus process. The uninstall procedure on the istat menus page fails and the process respawns if you kill it

the new quicktime x definitely feels like a rough draft...i'm sure they'll work it out soon. i hope they do, anyway.

Did you not see my post? You can "burn" the DMG onto an empty HD or partition. It even installs faster.

thanks, didnt see yours and everyone elses post until later. ill do this. although insomniax not working has me sad =(

what about bootcamp? i have windows 7 installed, will SL affect it in any way? i dont know if they did, but Apple needs to release updated drivers for W7 anyway..

if only they made flash not sound like a plane taking off on my macbook
Flash has always been a fucking resource whore on OS X. It's really sad to see it this way. They really need to build flash from the ground up for OS X. I always keep my fans on max when running a lot of flash.

In related news, Silverlight FTW.

I thought Bootcamp is up to 3.0+ now?

Fuck. How may degrees are we talking about here?

Around 3 C or 5.5 F

It never used to hit 50 while I was just browsing the web, but it hits 50 and 51 quite frequently now. It also feels a bit warmer on my lap.

Temps seem to be settling back down to what they used to be.. Maybe something was going on in the background

i have no idea what that means. did they update it recently? i installed it with the latest drivers about...2 months ago and they are out of date. i know this because it doesnt properly support my microphone in the new jack on the new MBP (at least i think thats the problem)

ah, nvm i see it was updated to 3.0. doesnt say windows 7 support..hopefully its there

Marco.org's Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Review, Complete, Printer-Friendly Edition

I’ve been using the betas on my home desktop since WWDC. Most things work, and I occasionally notice something that’s different. If you replaced Snow Leopard with Leopard, I probably wouldn’t notice for at least a day. (Replace Leopard with Tiger and I’d notice within seconds.)

When I use my laptop or my work desktop, both still running Leopard, I don’t miss any Snow Leopard features.

I preordered it from Amazon, but I probably won’t get it until next week, even though everyone else can get it on Friday. This doesn’t bother me at all, and I’m not going to put any effort into getting it sooner.

Some minor things are broken with certain applications, and I’ve hit a few minor bugs with the OS. Therefore, I don’t plan to upgrade my work computer or laptop for a little while, possibly until 10.6.1 or until application support is a bit better.

We’re likely to see software that takes advantage of new Snow Leopard APIs in the next few years. But there’s no reason to rush the upgrade and be among the first to hit compatibility problems. Day-to-day use is almost unchanged from Leopard. That’s a good thing, but it won’t make for a flashy release.

Upgrade when convenient. No rush.

Best review ever
until arstechnica's drops

Is the screen grab utility new in Snow Leopard? You can take a timed screen grab.

pretty sure that's been in for a while.

edit: another incompatibility report.

iClip 4.0. can't adjust any settings and menu bar button flakes out and freezes sometimes. does not inspire confidence. hasn't been updated in years, I doubt it will now. will start testing out replacements for clipboard collectors.

So looks like I will be going naked without mouse drivers for the time being. Basically it comes down to this...

No drivers - Can use Expose on mouse, no back and forth.

LCC drivers - No expose on mouse, can do everything else. Dock has a freezing problem though.

USB Overdrive - No expose on mouse, can do everything else. No freezing.

Nothing shows up in the menu bar and when I try to turn anything on it says "iStat menus could not load the <x> extra"

Damn. I can't live without my istat stuff in the menu bar. I feel a whole lot better for putting off my Snow Leopard purchase for a week or so now.

Did Apple bork the ability to change the application icon on certain apps? Mail kicked back to the default icon and I can't change it back anymore. The default Mail icon is icky. :(
I'm getting the same error on certain apps too (Quicktime X, Time Machine, Finder, etc.). It seems like the apps not allowing me to change the icon via Get Info all require an admin to modify the files. I forced my icons on the apps by opening up the package contents, renaming/deleting the original icon, typing in my password when the prompt shows up, adding my custom icons using the original icon name to the package, and then typing my password again.

Yeah I love it to, I just wish there was some sort of indication to tell you that you have something minimized.

Upgraded from Tiger with the upgrade disc with zero issues. Everything seems a little bit snappier and I am enjoying shit that most Mac users have been using for the last two years like Time Machine, Stacks, and Spaces.

It might just be me but videos look better to me on the new Quicktime.

So, in the time it took to back up my laptop, I installed Snow Leopard on 2 of my family's computers (my younger sister's laptop & my dad's iMac). :D Just now copying the disc to an external HD as my cd drive does not want to work right now >_< Won't even accept ay CD's or DVD's. (Either something is jammed or some metal inside the drive is bent. Something is blocking it) Typical. Computer gives me problems AFTER I get back from the Apple Store :lol

But, the upgrade process, for the 2 computers, went pretty fast. Now just to wait an hour & a half for disk utility (on my younger sister's laptop) to restore the install DVD to a partition on my external HD :D

that's been my reaction to all of this. total indifference mostly, with a slight hint of "hey, that's kind of cool".

don't get me wrong, given that they've priced it accordingly, I'm glad this exists, but I'm just not seeing anything to get excited about.

Honestly, I think 10.7 will be a return to "300 new features!" :lol Especially with all of those "illuminous/Marble" rumors of a new UI supposed to have been included in Leopard/Snow Leopard. Apple has created an even more stable platform with Snow Leopard. I can't wait to see what is done from here on out :D

Niiiice. Time MAchine now gives a percentage when it's calculating how much needs to be backed up. People can now watch that instead of rushing to a forum asking why it's taking so long to prepare.

In other news, my 6 hour long compile session finished, but the program doesn't work. :/

Anyway to turn on highlight in SL Stacks? The Leopard terminal command isn't working in SL.

Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock mouse-over-hilte-stack -boolean yes

How do I see the contents of my osx partition from windows?
I haven't bother with it yet, but you have to install the HFS driver first. It should be as easy as popping in the Snow Leopard install disc while in Windows and then updating the drivers.

I'm digging Snow Leopard so far. Trying really hard to look past no MultiClutch, but every time I try anything out I'm not able to open or close a window and I get frustrated.

Love the little touches. The inspector pane style on the dock contextual menus is great. The expose refinement is great. The airport indicator's scanning candy and TM backup progress meter is solid.

I think the Quicktime X interface is pretty hot. I know various Linux flavors have had paneless video apps forever and ever, but it really feels like a tangible video is just coexisting with my other applications because of the way the UI was handled.

Finishing up my last check to see if I backed up all the essentials. Damn, the time for a new OS draws near! :D Optical drive is running smooth!

Got Snow Leopard installed on my laptop. Broke down and did a clean install. Just transferring everything back with Migration Assistant now. Should be done in about an hour. :D Typing this on my old, shitty, 2003 iBook G4 (took a decent amount of abuse in High School, long story) :lol

Is there a way to make these icons smaller? And also, is there a way to set a general rule for the size of the icons in general:)?

Anyone try out the new Boot Camp drivers for 3.0 in Snow Leopard? Want to know if they work well with 64-bit Windows 7 and if they place nice, will my somewhat hacked-to-work graphics card driver still work?

SL appears to have fixed whatever Safari issue I was having. Safari would often hang, usually in conjunction with typing text in the address bar and hitting enter. From googling, it looked like it was a problem with something nasty in my user cache. I used Onyx to clear it out (as directed), but Safari still hung all the time. But it's fine now, which is cool. I was about ready to stop using it and switch to Firefox until Chrome is out.

Reporting back from my 10.5 -> 10.6 upgrade.

Upgrade itself was about 50 minutes on my Feb '08 MBP. Nothing really fancy when upgrade was done aside from the replying of the welcome video.

I'm extremely happy to reconfirm that Safari is no longer choking on animated gifs. I've gone hunting for various threads with large animated gifs and Safari has handled them all. Not the smoothest execution, but my god do they not crash or stall the browser. Fantastic.

Dock Expose is pretty cool, but I don't I'll be using it too much.

Really dig QT7 interface (or lack thereof).

Good stuff, gents.

Hey dude since our macbooks are about the same age, how is your battery doing? I'm worrying right now as mine is doing a max of about 2.15 hours :O

alright 10.6 is installed, baby!

woo hoo!

set up my work exchange account. fantastic!

text correction is doing its thang.

snappy finder is snappy.

it's all good.

edit: @scorcho. only iWork '08 had a serial. the new iWork 09 dispensed with it. Apple must've figured it wasn't worth the hassle.

ABout exchange, which incoming mail server did you use? Is it the same as the outgoing one? I checked my iPhone settings and it only has one exchange address

I have an early 08 MacBook Pro also. Here's a fully charged battery, which I use pretty regularly and was kind of calibrated about a month ago.

Finally made it to the other side. Installation went without any problems. Now just to update all of my apps :lol The change in gamma got me a little confused for a second :lol Can't wait for iStat Menu to be updated. My menu bar looks naked now :lol

Wow a lot of whine is coming from my Macbook white 4,1:(. It's coming from under the trackpad. The sound is like 'kgrrrrrrrrr tsjk tsjk kgrrrrrrr' over and over again:lol. I had some issues with this before Snow Leopard, but it's more apparent now. Also when I scroll through a page with the trackpad, the whine noise changes a little bit. What is this? Removing the power cord has no effect:(.

Lol, anyone play around with the kanji character input?

It's pretty neat. Once on, your mouse pointer is off and you make strokes. The edges of the trackpad become touch buttons. I wonder if the touch buttons can be used in future?
