And when the coaches looked at Clint Session's body of work in Week 11s 17-15 win at Baltimore, they had him in on 14 tackles, double what game-day officials at M&T Bank Stadium had. It was his most productive game.
And if Indianapolis sufficiently slows Ray Rice, Willis McGahee and the Ravens' run game Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium, odds are Session will have a lot to do with it. If its a tight game, the Colts will have to tackle well, and Session needs to lead the charge with two better known commodities -- safety Antoine Bethea and middle linebacker Gary Brackett.
He ranks third on the Colts with 104 tackles and had two picks, a forced fumble and half a sack this season.
And hes worked well with middle linebacker Gary Brackett and strongside 'backers Tyjuan Hagler and Philip Wheeler, a group that blitzed much more often this season under new defensive coordinator Larry Coyer.
His production was peaking as the regular season slowed for Indianapolis. In the five games before the Colts shut things down in the third quarter of the Week 16 game against the Jets, he had four games with double digit tackles and 57 tackles total.
Session really put his name on the map in Week 10 of his rookie season, when he picked off two Philip Rivers passes in a close loss to the Chargers. Injuries stunted his progress early on, but Session would flash impact potential in certain plays, like when he broke Jamal Lewis' facemask in December of 2008.
Perhaps this is a common trait of the underrated defender -- he's the one who sets others up for success. His coaches and teammates love him for it, and those who watch with a careful eye appreciate the effort. But it's the guy making a beeline for the ballcarrier who gets the recognition when the unheralded player is the one who bears watching -- he's the one setting up play after play for himself and others. This is true of Session, and also of our next defender.
and when has revis ever been a "non-factor"? the guy makes the game 10 v 10, he lets the jets do all their blitzing because they don't need to drop guys back. woodson won because of his stats. ask any coach in the league who they would rather have on their team between the 2 and all 32 coaches would pick revis. or just look at wild card weekend. woodson gets burned by fitz, revis shuts out johnson. packers get shredded because they can't afford to pressure warner, jets smoother palmer because there's no way johnson was going to beat revis.eznark said:And because all he does is play corner. Woodson played corner, safety, nickel and linebacker this season. The Packers didn't let teams make him a non-factor because he can do so much more than play coverage. He found the ball, which is what great players do.
Sure, Revis is an excellent tackler (I'll have to take your word for it)....of wide receivers. Woodson tackles running backs, tight ends, quarterbacks and receiver.

Tamanon said:Eh, I'm sure some coaches would pick Woodson, depends on their defensive scheme really.
Shutdown corners are extremely rare in the league. There are only two of them that I can think of. I think almost anyone would take Reevis over Woodson (not even taking into account their age). Now that the league has evolved into a touch football passing league guys like Reevis are even more valuable than they were in the past.Tamanon said:Eh, I'm sure some coaches would pick Woodson, depends on their defensive scheme really.

Taking away one player from the game entirely is huge. Imagine if one guy could remove AP from the game completely, Larry Fitzgerald (oh the irony), or even if a fullback could be counted on to remove one guy from the play with absolute consistency. Shutting one guy down is like removing an essential part from a machine. The machine may still run, but its nowhere near its normal level of efficiency.eznark said:Ask any of the 7800 people who are currently coaching at any level who they would rather have, a total football player or a shut down corner. All 7800 would say they want the total package.
I can pull shit out of my ass too.
If any of the coaches said Woodson they are fucking retarded given the age difference. If you asked them which season they would prefer I'm guessing it'd be 50/50. Shutting down a single player is great, making plays on every single possession is much, much better.
I'm guessing it normally goes to the latest sack-master, even if they have recently been suspended for steroid abuse.Gigglepoo said:Deion Sanders only won the award once (as a Niner), so you may be right.
Of course, Rod Woodson (more of a do-everything CB than just a shut down guy) only won one time as well.

I'm just saying, he shouldn't get bonus perks from $tats since the defense that he played on wasn't nearly as good as the Jets'.eznark said:I agree, and in most Packers games this year Woodson was able to do just that. Added bonus, he could also do everything else you'd want a defensive player to do.

Revis only allowed 23 fewer yards than Woodson, while allowing two MORE catches. Revis was also thrown at 111 times, compared to Woodson's 76.
So did Revis REALLY not have the opportunities Woodson had?
Turns out, Revis had MORE opportunities than Woodson to makes plays on the ball, came away with fewer interceptions and allowed more receptions. Yards per catch is within a yard.
So honestly, lets give Revis the award in a year he deserves it, which will probably be next year.
The voters can't be bothered to watch every game so they are just going to look at the guy who is leading the league in takeaways and/or sacks and make their decision from that.Gigglepoo said:Deion Sanders only won the award once (as a Niner), so you may be right.

Sure, my point is that Woodson's stats are not inflated by chances. Revis was thrown at more often than Woodson. I don't think anyone is arguing Woodson is a better cover man at this point in his career.Cheeto said:Lets not forget 23 defensed balls.
edit: or QB ratings against him
edit: or that the completion percentage is 37 to 51 in favor of revis
Look up times thrown at and laugh at your "voters are dumb" inference. It isn't fair because you can't intercept the ball when it is thrown to you, but what shut down corners lack in accolades they usually make up for in salary.

He played against the woeful Chiefs and the Saints, who have shown to be fairly average on defense majority of the season. I use to think Eagles without Westbrook would be bad, but that's changed. Eagles without McNabb from here on would be a big relief for the Cowboys, Redskins, and Giants.yankeehater said:He came in against a really tough Ravens D without and practice with the first teamers. INDIANAPOLISAt his weekly press conference Monday, Colts head coach Jim Caldwell announced that he will rest key starters during the divisional round of the AFC playoffs to keep his players fresh for a Super Bowl run. "You can't win the Super Bowl if you don't get there with all your players healthy," said Caldwell, who added that next Saturday quarterback Peyton Manning would probably get the first two series, which will mostly be comprised of running plays. "Dwight [Freeney] and Dallas [Clark] will get about a quarter in the AFC Championship game. But honestly, even if we make it to the Super Bowl, I can't see playing these guys the whole game. The 2010 season is closer than you think." Throughout the entire press conference Manning could be seen in full uniform, stalking and pacing in the back of the room.
I have no problem with Kolb starting. I agree he played well in his first two starts barring the INTs against the Saints, but he still threw for a ridiculous amount of yardage and it was a tough game for a first start.yankeehater said:He came in against a really tough Ravens D without and practice with the first teamers. Trading a franchise quarterback who is still playing at a very high level for an unproven young guy is suicide. If the Eagles really want to give Kolb a chance then make it an open competition before next season.yankeehater said:Are you serious? He is the only QB to throw for 300 yards in his first 2 starts, and he had like 800 yards in those 2 games. he is super accurate and will allow the Eagles to go back to the short passing game that Andy favors.

Also, a lot of qb's come in and do really well until team's have built up some game tape on them. Lets see how Kolb does after he has played in 8 or 10 games and people know his tendencies before he is crowned. But, hey if the Eagles want to overreact after a bad playoff loss in a game in which the qb had almost no chance to succeed and start over I am sure the Redskins will be happy that they will no longer be the worst team in the NFC East.
