Sundin would not speculate on his future if the next season doesn’t work out the way he envisions.

He said he’s enthusiastic about the Leafs’ chances to win the championship, even though the team has missed the playoffs two years in a row.

He said NHL teams are more evenly matched than ever with the salary cap and pointed to Ottawa, the finalist this year, as a team not much more gifted than the Leafs. He said he believes the Leafs could have beaten Ottawa in a seven-game series had they made it to the playoffs.

"I like the fact all the teams are more even with salary caps," he said. “There’s a smaller difference between the best team in the league and the team that finished last. We played Ottawa many times. No reason we couldn’t have beaten them in seven games."

What a captain!

Sportsnet.ca -- Jim Balsillie and the city of Hamilton are close to announcing a deal that would make Hamilton the only destination Balsillie would move the Nashville Predators to should he buy and then relocate the NHL team, according to a report in The Globe and Mail.

The announcement could come as early as Wednesday.

Negotiations are in their late stages between Hamilton city council and Balsillie, the co-CEO of Research in Motion (RIM), manufacturer of BlackBerry devices.

RIM is based in Waterloo, Ont., and it was widely speculated that Balsillie would want to move the team to the Kitchener-Waterloo/Guelph area. This deal, should it be announced, would take that region out of consideration.

Oh snap

Balsillie should just come out and say he wants to move the team and that he's going to give the Preds the ol' Rachel Phelps treatment as long as they're in Nashville. This thinly veiled secrecy is irritating and reminds me of the bullshit Frontiere pulled with the Rams when I was a kid.

I'd also rather get through the Hockey Taliban's jubilant celebrations sooner than later.

Poor Maple Leafs.
They're gonna continue to get pounded by the Sens from the front, and now also by the Hamilton Blackberries from behind...

i was reading the local (vancouver) paper tonight and noticed they for some reason had a short interview with colby armstrong in the sports section, so i figured i'd type some of it up since there are pens fans here and colby armstrong is ****ing awesome:

-

Q: When was the last time you won a medal in something other than hockey?

Colby: Maybe when I was 11 years old. I took down a couple of figure skating medals back in the day ... I was kind of like Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrel's character in the movie Blades of Glory). I brought the same kind of passion to the ice. It was about intensity.

Q: What have you done to improve Evgeni Malkin's English?

Colby: Personally, I haven't done a lot to help him. He still has no clue how to speak English ... We use a lot of hand signals and talk to him like he's a baby.

If you were writing your tell-all book about your teammate Sidney Crosby, which detail would be the juiciest?

Colby: I think he has a moat around his house with a dragon guarding the front gate. The guy is a legend. He's the only guy in the world with a dragon. I think Tim Hortons hired a dragon to guard him.

i ****ing love colby armstrong :lol

Hey hey hey, we still own the Sens in the playoffs. :)

This Balsillie guy seems like a real jerkoff.
Hamilton. I mean.. really.
I hope the BOG tells him to **** off.

I always thought a good place for a team would be Seattle.

The BoG are going to approve the sale, did you see how much he's buying the Preds for? It's going to increase ever franchise's value.

Do they stay in the Central or move to the Northeast?

But then who moves to the West to compensate?!?

I think a team like Atlanta could move to the west temporarily and then when the league expands to 32 teams, them and another west team in the east timezone (Detroit) can move to the east.

What do you guys think of Yashin? If we sign him for 2M/yr, can you imagine a Latendresse, Yashin, Kovalev line? That's a big line, with Kovalev being the smallest guy on it.

Grabovski-Kostitsyn-Kostitsyn a.ka. the Left Wing Line will destroy the NHL.

it honestly blows my entire ****ing mind that you or any habs fan would want a soft, half disinterested european on your roster. how many ****ing times do you need to be burned before you realize how wrong this direction is?

seriously, boggles the entire ****ing mind.

are you ****ing kidding me? do you want your team to suck for an eternity? here's an idea, get rid of the fluffy european 3rd line scrubs you're paying too much for on your team and go for some players with real talent.

But if the Thrashers moved to the Central

Who would replace them in the Southeast lol

Northeast would HAVE to have Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, Buffalo, Ottawa

Would you move the Bruins to the Atlantic and the Flyers or Penguins to the Southeast?

But then you lose the Pennsylvania rivalry

If Nashville goes to Winnipeg or Seattle it's really simple.

Put the Wild in the Central and the Winnipeg Jet-engined Predators or Seattle Thundercats in the North West.

Nashville can only go to Hamilton

Wow...if the Northeast loses Boston and gains f'ing Nashville...that would be insane. Boston's the team you count on for easy wins right now.

Given Toronto used to be in the western conference, I wouldn't be surprised to see whatever permutation of Nashville stay until more teams present themselves to help the gap. Yeah, it's bizarre to split conferences among ontario teams, but I'd seriously doubt a big realignment just for the move.

Assuming this move actually goes through, maybe the NHL should go back to the Campbell/Wales Conference designation, only with each conference/league getting its own East, Central and West divisions, MLB style. Along with evening out the geography, this would also alleviate some of the current Western conference teams' concerns regarding the amount of travel they have to do relative to their Eastern counterparts/not getting to see stars like Crosby often enough.

Sources say the prospective new owner of the Nashville Predators intends to do so by soliciting season tickets deposits for seats and suites at Copps Coliseum.

A season ticket campaign is expected to commence Thursday with all deposits fully refundable. Purchasers will put their money down with no promises in terms of when, or if, an NHL team will eventually call Hamilton home.
sad panda

Isn't Copps a total dump by now? I remember it was a serviceable-ish arena for a NHL team back in '87, but it hasn't been terribly current for a while now. They'd have to build a new rink fairly soon.

I'm just sayin'.

It seems crazy, but with Darryl Sutter pretty much at Generalissimo-For-Life status in the organization there is virtually no chance for the sort of tacky and damaging power struggles that Keenan can't seem to avoid. Keenan has usually been a good coach when he actually focuses on coaching, and he's shown an ability to change his styles over the years to a much greater degree than most of his peers with similar miles under the hood.

If Playfair gets gassed after one season - and to be honest after the playoffs the sheer coachable flaws of the team were pretty glaring - and Sutter wants another task master to strangle kittens during intermission to get guys attention there's worse picks out there.

i wish they'd move toronto back into the western conference. the canucks could use the 4 extra wins next season.
Are 4 extra wins really worth the unimaginable agony of watching Leaf fans suddenly show up 4 extra times out of ****ing nowhere to walk around GM Place in their brand new Domi replicas and yell stupid shit?

are you kidding? that would be the best thing ever. finally i could have a fan of a miserable team to laugh at other than oilers fans who usually get drunk and leave half way through the game.

Detroit and Atlanta should swap divisions.

Then the Preds can run over everyone in the Central Division and the Southeast would stop looking like a joke division already.

I've never seen that...the only time I remember something similar to that was when I was at the infamous Game # 3 against Dallas in 1997. The Oilers were down 3-0 with about 4 minutes to go when Dougie Weight scored to start a comeback.
