WTF is Sutter thinking, seriously.

Playfair actually got the team to the freakin' playoffs against the top-seeded Red Wings and boasted one of the best home-game win percentages in the NHL.

Hiring Keenan is going to turn this team into every other team Keenan has coached recently - a joke.

May as well repost here:

Did a couple more NHL cars, Philly and the Habs...thought they would be the easiest...took me freaking forever! Something like this would have probably taken some of you guys 15 minutes. :lol

There is an odd glitch on the Habs one...I tried cutting and pasting those layers back in...gonna try some more fixes...

Again if anyone wants them as gifts, let me know...I'll have to fix the Habs one before sending that out, don't know how long that'll take.

You should see the reaction here at my office...all of them are actually praising the move. They think it will "whip the team into shape."

Then again, these are Flames fans and they praise everything. I even remember them acting like the Andrei Zyuzin signing was the missing peice to a Stanley Cup Championship.

I was looking forward to all the awful trades.

Yeah, I would have loved seeing Miikka Kiprusoff and Mark Giordano and a 6th Round pick to the Thrashers for Bobby Holik, Michael Garnett and Dan Snyder.

oh ohhh

NHL Awards on tap tonight....

post your predictions!

Calder : Malkin
Norris : Neidermayer
Selke: Sakic
Jack Adams: Michael Therrien (but I think Lindy Ruff will probably get it though)
Vezina: Brodeur
Pearson: Crosby
Hart: Crosby

Mike Keenan = the Mark Messier of coaching. Overrated to a disturbing degree.

God bless Jim Balsille...he's got balls of steel. I reckon the only people who don't want to see the Preds move to Southern Ontario are Gary Bettman, the dozen or so clueless executives in the NHL who still think going to big non-traditional hockey markets will somehow blow up the sport in the US, and of course the Maple Laughs. I reckon he's done all his legal homework and knows there isn't a goddamn thing anyone can do to stop him.

I can't wait to see how many Leafs transplants the Preds get as part of their fanbase. Sadly I doubt it'll do anything to light a fire under that bloated organization's ass. But that'll no longer be my problem.

What do you guys think of Yashin? If we sign him for 2M/yr, can you imagine a Latendresse, Yashin, Kovalev line? That's a big line, with Kovalev being the smallest guy on it.

I think if this happens that by November some Hab fans will be complaining about the lack of production from this line, while others will refer to it as "a great checking line".

I actually think a team close by to Toronto and Buffalo is going to create some really good rivalries in the future.

I don't really like Basille just because he tried this nonsense with the Pens and had the cover pulled off his trickery, and I feel really bad for Sef, But I almost questioned why the NHL put a franchise in Nashville to begin with.

If one of the American teams needed to get relocated, it is a very easy choice to pick from Carolina, Nashville or one of the Florida teams since their attendance is so low.

Yeah, I didn't like when it was done with the Penguins...that's one of the few good hockey markets in the US. But there's about ten franchises that are ripe for a relocation, or a mothballing.

Anyway, that's beside the point...all I care about is seeing someone (else) stick to the Maple Leafs. And the ultimate way to stick it to them is to take away mind and marketshare. Short of an expansion team showing up in Toronto (fat chance), this is the next best option.

are the selke nominees

I think the NHL can and should work in "non-traditional" markets...the thing is, the league needs to build a grassroots following for the game from the ground up first, rather than plonking a franchise down willy-nilly and expecting 20,000 people to show up every night. Start recreational leagues, youth programs, clinics etc., let people get a hands-on feel for the game first before asking them to shell out 60 bucks for a ticket or watch it on TV, and I'm convinced that all the intangibles (speed, intensity, creativity) that make hockey the greatest game on earth will translate to and make hardcore fans and true believers out of anyone.

therrian should definitely not be allowed to lay a greasy finger on the jack adams. and in that case neither should alain. so that leaves ruff.

everytime i hear the name predators i'm going to think of nashville and i think a lot of people will. it's just mean to preds fans if you ask me. slap a new name on it and make it your own franchise.

True
It will likely change after a season or two

But do people in Atlanta get upset when they see the Calgary Flames do well?

Maxime Giguere, the infant son of Ducks goalie J.S. Giguere and his wife, Kristen, underwent surgery to correct a deformed right eye Tuesday at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, one of the few centers in the world that provide this type of surgery.

Carlyle got a contract extension too. I can feel the extra year of grit already.

What sucks about the Nashville situation is that they don't have a problem getting fans to show up, it's suit anemia that's ****ing them over. I know certain factions won't shed any tears for them but that's one of the major reasons cited for a place like Winnipeg not getting an NHL team, either.

I'll take Pandolfo for the Selke and Sakic for the Lady Byng

After his work in the playoffs, Pahlsson not getting the Selke would be robbery.

God wasn't a slouch in the regular season, either. All the doofuses that vote can't be bothered to watch games that are played in the PST so he'll get robbed for the second time this season.

I suppose that's better than my idea of an ad that airs during other sporting events and insults them. Ie. During the NBA Finals: show a collage of basketball fights and proclaim "there's nothing more embarrassing than watching grown men fight like girls...(cut to clip of NHL fight) watch a real sport...the NHL".

Kidding aside, I was thinking that it would be interesting if the NHL tried to appeal to Americans by painting the NHL as the ultimate sport:

Narrator: What one sport combines mind blowing speed (shows clip of Nascar)...with grit (show clip of NFL tackle)...with finesse (shows alley oop from NBA)...with teamwork (shows a triple play in Baseball)...with heart (shows a clip of Boxing)...(now show NHL clips relevant to all points made) The NHL...the Ulimate Sport.

Wow, sounded way better in my head...after reading it I'm not so convinced anymore. :P

one day later, still laughing my ****ing ass off at the flames hiring mike keenan :lol

edit: i truly think the NHL should promote the fighting and physicality of the sport... MMA is becoming so huge in America right now, it's easily the hottest sport (in terms of recent growth), so the NHL should really try and capture a segment of that market, as hockey easily has the most legit fighting out of any of the major sports.

I agree. There's a code of conduct in the fighting, it's strictly one on one, the refs are constantly involved, it's not like it's barbaric as some attempt to paint it.

(which is why I was thinking of showing boxing in the fake ad I made up, it's a part of the sport, don't be ashamed of it)

But if you are a fight fan why waste time and money waiting through a hockey game for a fight when you can just watch MMA instead.

Wayne Gretzky is the only thing that pushed hockey in the USA and until somebody is scoring 200 points a season the american interest in hockey is going to be abysmal.

people won't see the ad and go "oh look hockey has fighting in some of their games, i'll just ditch MMA all together hur hur hur"

they won't look at it as an alternative, they'll look at it as an addition to sate their appetite.

it's not like people watching CSI see a Law and Order commercial (or vice versa) and say to themselves, "oh that show isn't as good as the one i'm watching, so i'll never watch it".

there are multiple hockey games on every single day during the season. there aren't MMA fights every day. seriously, it just makes sense.

Again, I think you guys are way off on Keenan. He's a historically successful coach and a shitty GM - but the odds of him getting involved in a power struggle with his new boss are slim and none. And with most every Flames fan convinced Playfair did not come close to getting the job done with a squad that was better on paper than it's been in decades a change is pretty easy to sell. Short term, I'm not really that worried about Keenan at all, and at this stage he's not going to be there a long time anyway. It's a different situation to when he was in Vancouver that's for sure.

Yeah, what is going on with Versus? I tuned in and there's Boxing on.

I think they were just taking CBC's feed and CBC tape delayed it but Versus didn't pay enough attention to that so it got all screwed up.

Here's the winners. I don't know if it has aired everywhere so I'll spoiler it...

Crosby took the Pearson
Lecavalier won the Richard
Brindamour won the Selke
Kessel won the Masterson
Malkin for Calder
Datsyuk for the Bing
Koivu for Clancy
Vigneault for Adams
Lidstrom for Norris
Brodeur for Vezina
Crosby has Hart

voting tallies are here: http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/06/14/live-from-the-nhl-awards/

Pahlsson got robbed. More first place votes than Brindamour too :\

Well, if Burke's success and the reductions of the instigator are things to go by you are going to see a lot more fighting next year. I don't think it will make a damn difference in terms of audience in the US, but who knows.
