I adored this game when I first started to play it. Loved the entire first disc. Then disc two rolled around and I had hope that disc 3 would get good again. And then by the fourth my hope was gone. I've never particularly enjoyed JRPG gameplay, but I seem to enjoy playing them for the stories. Thus, as the 1000 year dreams became more and more scarce, it became harder to continue playing. I forced myself to finish it by telling myself that playing mgs4 was off limits until I did so. If the story was like the 1000 year dreams then I would have been in love with this game.
It's not. That isn't just my opinion unfortunately, the story is your average JRPG kinda stuff. I don't think it's 'end of the world' bad, but if you think the gameplay is fossilized, the story won't pull you through.
I loved it through and through, was the hardest thing to get rid of when I sold my Xbox after it WOULDN'T STOP DYING. Favorite traditional JRPG since FFIX and made up for the slight dissapointments I had with BD and ES.
Never got around to play Lost Odyssey, but I absolutely loved Blue Dragon.
So, to the people who thought of Blue Dragon as a masterpiece, what did you think of Lost Odyssey ?
I really need to get around to finishing this (especially before the RPG onslaught hits this fall). I'm at disc 3 now and I enjoyed what I've played but, man, finding big chunks of time for RPGs is hard for me nowadays.

I liked Lost Odyssey a lot, but I thought it lacked the charm and sense of discovery of Blue Dragon. Also the random encounters got annoying when you had to go back to an old level to get an item.

I certainly don't speak for the majority, but I, too, LOVED Blue Dragon. The candy-coated visuals were such a treat compared to the typical bleak trash that's been prevalent this gen. Uematsu's score was simply wonderful, and I really formed an attachment with most of my group. Thank goodness I ignored that horrific demo on Live and just blindly purchased the thing on faith.
Lost Odyssey for me... well, it captures a few of these traits, but I couldn't help but to think it's missing that certain "something" that made Blue Dragon so special. Several areas of the game are breathtakingly gorgeous, while others almost look PS2 quality. The battle system is fairly interesting with the skills/spells constantly traded between mortals and immortals. The soundtrack is serviceable, though it's definitely not on par with Uematsu's best efforts (Dark Saint the exception... one of my favorites). Also, I really felt indifferent towards Kaim, and had a difficult time forcing myself to care about the plight of my robotic-monotone protagonist. Jansen, on the other hand, provides more than enough comic-relief to keep the story rolling along.
It's certainly worth a play-through, and I do think it's an above-average JRPG.
I know I probably sound overly critical of a game I really enjoyed. Other than a short span on disc 2, the 50+ hours I put into the game really flew by. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
BUT, if someone despises turn based combat I'm just saying the story alone won't pull you through.
If you're on the fence about it I definitely say pick it up and give it a try. It's 'old school' at it's finest IMO.
Ok jesus fucking christ I'm getting pissed of with the
Ice Monster on the train tracks.
I get thrown with the kids straight to the battle. Well, you know what, I've never bothered to play with those little fuckers since they're so mediocre, so they are level 16. They can't take a single Aquara attack sometimes. Of course there is absolutely no chance to level them up at all.
I've counted that I can do three rounds of Groundas before the monster does Reflect, taking away around 4000-5000HP. After that I can only use some bombs, taking off some 1500HP more. I don't have enough bombs to take off the remaining 4000HP since the shop in the town"won't sell to foreigners anything". So I have no way to buy a workable weapon, only weapon I have is the little wimp and his crappy frisbee.
Have I hit a game design failure / dead end and must restart the game?
EDIT: :lol :lol :lol OMG ahahahaha you guys never believe what just happened. Once the monster once again wiped off the kids, I was so pissed off I paused the game and came to rant here. Once I went back to the game and continued so that I could kill the rest of the party restart the battle, I just f'ed around and attacked with Jansen. 2HP damage and BOOM monster gone. Lucky thing I didn't reload checkpoint

cave after the mansion months ago, but stopped playing due to exams. Went back to play it, played for about an hour and a half, looked like I was almost out of the cave when some fucking piece of shiz used Prisma and wiped the entire party.
So pissed at having wasted that time.... Do I go back... *sigh*
It's just so annoying because I've really enjoyed {most of} the game, and want to see how things work out. But just... ugh... It was even the last enemy on the field. I don't know how to go back to it. That damn cave, it even just seems like filler.

I'm playing this game bit-by-bit. Month ago or so I made it to the 2nd disc and yesterday I entered the 3rd and stopped.
There are times when Lost Odyssey almost feels like an enjoyable mediocre RPG, but just when you are about the start enjoying the game whole heartedly, the retardness of combat/characters/whatever struck you. Hard.

Holy crap the 4th disc is HARD. While the three first discs went fast through, I find myself stuck in almost every single battle on the 4th disc, whether boss or not, and needing to seek help after three or four failed battles. It seems that I have to buy special rings for almost every battle. I'm currently
Assuming the rollout of jRPG's later this year and next appears as promising as expected, Lost Odyssey will be a forgotten blip, neither terrible or good, but destined to be lost amidst the sea of :hopefully: more engaging RPG options on the 360.
I totally disagree with the forgotten blip comment, just the 1000 years story are memorable and it's going to be a while when you get an emotional event like the end of disk 1 for a video game.LO is a game i will remember a long time.
Try to get your hands on one for each of the status ailments, and later, one for the elements. Pass them around the immortals until they've learned the skill, equip the skill, then have the mortals wear them when needed.

Pay a visit to Gongora´s secret cave to level up some more and learn skills. Later on, do the same again with the Temple of Enlightment as is the best place in the game to "grind".

Yeah, though Cooke becomes irrelevant when the immortals learn casting support, Mack at least has his raw strength.
And regarding discs, i thought the 2nd was the weakest even if i also liked what happens with Sarah.
1st one has the most emotional section in the game. 3rd the variety of situations and story progression missed in the ones before and the 4th is still enjoyable because finally you have access to all the world locations and specially the sidequests.
I just saw a big ad for LO in the next Official Xbox Magazine...in the Sept issue. I was wondering why they may be slightly re-marketing it. That would certainly make sense.
I'm at the final are of the game, and I really have enjoyed it thus far. The overall plot fucking sucks, but I really like the specific stories of the characters.
I thought disc 3 was terrible though. My party was all the same level, so it wasn't a problem, but fuck, I hate being stuck with only casters. Mack doesn't count as a tank because he's a little shit.
I really like the music in the game. The BG music in the Sea of Baus is wonderful.
Weirdly enough, the game gets easier the farther I go. The last time I got wiped out in a fight was the one right before getting Cooke and Mack. The hardest boss in the game was the first one for me.

The first 2 discs are wonderful, but the game becomes more annoying than fun once you hit disc 3. The final dungeons fucking blew, but at least the finally boss battle theme was amazing.
I just wish the game consisted of only the immortals and Jansen. Everyone else was annoying or just tacked on.
I can't really recommend it much, it's quite a repetitve dungeon even if the scattered log bits you find are somewhat entertaining. The new items are ridiculously powerful though, but it's not like you need them at that point in the game.
By the end of disc 1, I was in love with the game.
By the end of disc 2, I was a bit underwhelmed. Nothing really exciting happened on disc 2, and the pacing of the dungeons was starting to become tedious. Still, the promise of more Dreams kept me going.
I'm a few hours into disc 3, and the main game's popped back into awesome status. Once the party
started getting separated
, it's been a pretty great ride so far. Disc 3 is a good redemption for disc 2.
I'm surprised other people in this page found disc 3 disappointing. Then again, I didn't have any difficulties gameplay-wise since all my characters were about evenly leveled-up.
