Festival Trophy to George Lucas - 15/05/2005

In Cannes for the out of competition presentation of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas received the Festival Trophy in the auditorium onboard the ship Queen Mary 2, anchored in the Bay of Cannes for a few hours. " The saga began in Cannes in 1971 when I attended with my first film THX 1138, shown in the Directors' Fortnight," remembered Lucas. "I concluded my first contract for Star Wars with United Artists at the Carlton Hotel, where I am staying this year. Cannes is a very special place for me."

A.O. Scott, NY Times:
"This is by far the best film in the more recent trilogy, and also the best of the four episodes Mr. Lucas has directed. That's right (and my inner 11-year-old shudders as I type this): it's better than "Star Wars." "

I live in a small town full of dipshits..I assume getting there an hr ahead will be ok. Anywhere but the front or the sides and I'm happy.

Yeah... the theater I'm going to capped out on 12 screens showing this at midnight, and I'm in the theater that sold out a day after they went on sale online, so the dressed up fanboys are gonna be out in droves. :D

Lucas said in the Cannes press conference that AOTC WAS a PG-13, but LFL and Fox convinced the MPAA to give it a PG.

There were rumors that the MPAA originally gave it a PG-13 and that confirmed it.

Had a Star Wars marathon with some of my friends last night. After watching the original Star Wars, they remarked how lame it was, and insisted on skpping the other OT movies in favour of getting right to the PT, which they claimed was "more entertaining".

I think I need to disown my friends :-/

I got my ticket today for Wednesday, May 18th at 12:05pm. It's odd cause it's the only showing of the movie until the 19th, so I double checked with the theater to make sure it's not a mistake and end up having to go at midnight, they confirmed it's at noon and the ticket says so as well, so I'm set.

Lucas comissioning something really has nothing to do with it. Look at it this way: If you want to know "facts" about what happened in the Star Wars universe, only the movies tell the "truth". Everything else is just guessing.

If you want to believe the rest happened, go for it, but don't expect that to be a final word. EU is contradicted all the time.

And no matter what you think of the prequels, they are still better than a lot (not all) of the shit cooked up in the EU. That is a fact, and if you disagree you just have horrible taste in life, are an overreactor, and are pretentious.

:lol christ. Settle down skippy. I asked a simple question. Just wondering how, if the creator goes to someone and says "hey, lets make this Clone Wars shit, and have it lead up to Episode III perfectly, I think it'll be pretty cool" it's not canon. How shit on the OFFICIAL Star Wars site, the official site of HIS own movies, have all this information on characters that's not in the movies themselves, isn't canon either. A simple ass question. No need to fling any personal insults based off a question on me or anyone else in the thread.

Yes and the OS databank clearly labels entries as "The Films" (which are canon), "Behind the Scenes", and "EU" (which isn't canon).

Yep, disown them, though Star Wars as a trilogy really doesn't pick up until ESB. It becomes classic at that point imo. They all get comfortable within their characters and tons of classic scenes and a fantastic plot takes place.

I dont know why it would have been rated PG-13. I dont believe it.

There's only so many severed limbs/heads the MPAA allows in a movie before it gets PG-13 and AOTC had one too many, but Fox and LFL convinced them to let it slip by with a PG because there really was no blood or anything else in the movie that would warrant a jump from PG to PG-13.

Before AOTC came out it was rumored that it got a PG-13, but it ended up being PG. The Cannes press conference confirmed that it was originally PG-13.

In the UK release, they actually had to edit out the Jango headbutt in the Kamino platform fight because that would've givin it a harsher rating over there. In the US that actually would've contributed to the PG-13.

None of that CGI shit even looked real. Give me a break. I really doubt he has any authority over the MPAA.

You doubt that big name directors and producers do not have sway over the MPAA? You are seriously deluded my friend.

Not sure if Mana posted these...

Usatoday gave it 3 1/2 out of 4 Stars :)

And Eberts review is online now.... 3 1/2 out of 4 Stars...

"Note: I said this is not necessarily the last of the "Star Wars" movies. Although Lucas has absolutely said he is finished with the series, it is inconceivable to me that 20th Century-Fox will willingly abandon the franchise, especially as Lucas has hinted that parts VII, VIII and IX exist at least in his mind. There will be enormous pressure for them to be made, if not by him, then by his deputies. "

Ok Ebert if it exists in George's mind and he doesnt want to make them, how the hell will his deputies make them :|

for one even having those in your possession is illegal and two, posting illegal shit on GAF is generally not a good idea.

It's not a good idea for whoever posts it, but for everyone else, it is. The GAF moderating team can also enjoy the illegal stuff and then crack down on it, just to stay on the legal side. :D

Here is a good quote from Lucas:

Lucas told reporters he was not too concerned by the negative reaction to Episodes I and II of the prequel trilogy.

"We've discovered in the last few years ... that we have two fan bases," he said. "One is over 25 and one is under 25.

"The films that those people (over-25s) don't like, which is the first two, actually are very fanatically adored by the under-25-year-olds."

Thats bullshit. Im 20 and I hate the prequals and everything they stand for. Here is what he should have said.

"We have 2 fanbases, one who likes good movies and one who likes it when I take a dump and put it on celluiod film."

actually lucas is right, though his 25 year separator is a bit off..

most fans under.. eh... like 16 or so now, usually like the PT very much, in many cases more than the OT.

I don't know where he got 25 years old from. but yeah, my siblings-in-law, the oldest of which will be 12 this year, all like the PT better.

It is a pretty accurate statement, aside from the age he provided.

Well, thats sad because not only are the prequels not good Star Wars movies, they aren't even good movies Period.

typical response by someone who is blinded by fanboyism.

The first 2 starwars prequels were bad in every sense of the word.

Well, I finally caved and bought my advance tickets for opening night.

By the way (and I don't want to read through this thread for fear of becoming more spoiled than I already am), the New York Times is reporting today that George Lucas got uncredited assistance on the screenplay from Tom Stoppard.

so 10 and 12 year old kids are blinded by fanboyism? and other people are not allowed to enjoy the films without being called fanboys either?

you are an idiot and once again prove that typical PT-bashers have no agenda other than whining and crying that Lucas didn't make the movies they wanted. So they insist that anyone who might possibly like the movies to some degree (leaving out any comparison or ranking to the originals) is a fanboy to justify their aboslute refusal that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I'll take the PT over most of the movies that have been released since 1999. Ep. 1 and 2 are still far better than those shitty Matrix sequels.

I'd still take the shittiest SW movie over having no SW movie at all.
