'Proposal' finds love at the box office. Sandra Bullock comedy tops weekend

Disney’s Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds topliner “The Proposal” smooched its way to No. 1 at the domestic box office, grossing an estimated $34.1 mil from 3,056 theaters to earn Bullock the best opening of her career and satisfy the pent-up demand for a romantic comedy.

Sony’s Jack Black-Michael Cera comedy “Year One” placed No. 4 in its debut. Directed by Harold Ramis, laffer grossed an estimated $20.2 million from 3,022 runs.

Holdovers “The Hangover,” from Warner Bros., and Disney-Pixar’s 3-D toon “Up” continued their marathon run, placing No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

“Hangover,” which had won the B.O. race the previous two weekends, slipped only 18% in its third sesh to gross an estimated $26.9 million from 3,545 theaters for a boffo cume of $152.9 million.

Disney-Pixar’s 3-D toon “Up” declined 31% in its fourth frame to gross an estimated $21.3 million from 3,832 runs for a cume of $224.1 million.

“Up” is coming close to surpassing Paramount’s “Star Trek,” the most successful films of the year at the domestic B.O. Through Sunday, “Star Trek” grossed $239.4 million through Sunday.

“Proposal” overperformed in its opening. Bullock’s previous best opening gross was $17.6 million for “Premonition.

Looks like someone needs to upgrade to Premier Pass :(

Oh and Year One is NOT a bomba considering it's budget ;)
Oh and yes, The Proposal already made it's freaking money :/
OH AND NICE, HANGOVER is making some RAD cash!

Poor Sony. Getting it's ass kicked in every department.

Whatever Works has a nice screen opening but it is of course all the east coasters watching it that push the opening weeks of all Woody Allen films. It doesn't come out to where I live until July I believe. Suckage. I wonder when Away We Go opens in Kansas?

On another note, I will probably go see the Proposal once it hits budget theaters. State of Play, Sunshine Cleaning, and Knowing is playing there now. I might see one of those tonight and then plow through my library movies.

Happy to see a comedy do good that isn't "Apatow Crew" or "Tyler Perry Presents!" shit. Hangover is going to roll over the hell over 200mil :lol

Hopefully Year One drops 70% next year >_>

Also glad to See Up performing so well, Its well deserved because I love it! :lol

Wow, Up is still going strong. Why is it going to well compared to the last 2 pixar movies? I'd have thought they had more appeal to kids than this would.

When the hell is Star Trek on DVD? It feels like it's been at the movies forever.

Hangover's now officially significantly outpacing Wedding Crasher's pace after this insanely low drop this week (26 million third week vs. 20 million), and it started with a lot more money too. It's assuredly going to be the top R-Rated comedy domestically now, this has got to be a good time to be those guys.

And Up looks like it could even top Star Trek as the top 2009 movie all-around by next weekend, good stuff all around.

Much deserved, indeed.

WHERE IS MY FUCKING MERCHANDISE BONANZA, DISNEY?

That won't last long as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince comes out soon.

I saw The Proposal this weekend because I love Sandra Bullock and would totally go bisexual for her. I thought it was a good movie. Having Betty White in it made it that much better.

I hope Ed Helms is still going to be in the Office. I guess Steve Carrell was in a couple of box office successes so I wouldn't see why he wouldn't be though.

Transformers, you mean? HP will do well, but TF2 will do better.
Both have $300m potential.

Don't forget that piece of shit New Moon comes out this year, also.
Twilight didn't break $200m domestically. It will be more of a media blitz then a box office smash.

I think after the summer is over:

1.) Transformers
2.) Harry Potter
3.) UP (just edged out)
4.) Star Trek

In domestic BO gross.

Transformers will win domestic but Harry Potter will win worldwide by about 100 mill. I'm waiting to see what kind of intense numbers the autobots can pull in for their sophomore debut.

It's retarded how successful Pixar is. The day will come when they fail and it will suck.
It will take multiple duds in a row to even begin to combat their name's immense appeal.

They're highly regarded around here and almost overrated. But when compared to other cgi crap movies like say ice age I don't mind pixar movies as they don't follow the formula of pop culture references and 80's/90's songs recycled.

No doubt. I can't believe OOTP pulled in almost A BILLION DOLLARS. That's just ridiculous. Also, I am sad that the best HP movie had the lowest gross. :(

Im more talking about their perfect streak of every movie they have made has won me over with more great qualities than bad.

Im sure financially they will do well but they are right now one of the most successful creative entities on the planet.

The Hangover is WELL on its way to toppling Wedding Crashers' $209M. That is amazing.

Which makes the girls at work's comments that Twilight is the new Harry Potter all the more ridiculous. Just does not have anywhere near the same appeal across different demographics.

It's less than two months after being released, still #7 on the top 10 movies, and you think a DVD release should be coming soon?

You need to stay far far away from those girls. Lest they sinking their banshee claws into you.

I'm glad Year One didn't do better than it did. It looked terrible. I can't believe it made as much as it did. I was hoping for a Dragonball level bomb. :lol
