Phenomenal. Outstanding. From the slick menus to the cinematic cut-scenes, the new play types and the buyable extras, this is Resident Evil at its best.

9.5 Graphics
Superb. Unequaled art. Technically in a league of its own. Gorgeous character models, environments, animation, lighting and texture effects. GameCube's prettiest title. Faked widescreen hurts.

9.0 Sound
Atmospheric and ambient. Heart-thumping sound effects and moody music, all in Dolby Pro Logic II.

9.5 Gameplay
The best Resident Evil game ever made. Truly intense. Lots of new compelling gameplay types. Excellent new targeting and action systems. Boss fights are incredible. Satisfying quest.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
At 20-plus hours, a meaty single-player adventure. And because the game tallies hit ratios and kills per area, there's records to be beaten. Plus, there are unlockables.

Faked widescreen hurts.
ouch

Overall 9.8

I love Capcom unlockables.

Don't bash him, I'd rather have seperate threads for the reviews. Not everyone clicks on the sticky thread

Yeah exactly, I can't be bothered going through the huge ass thread, thanks Torpedo

This is simply the best survival horror game ever created. In fact, had it come out in 2004, it would have been my pick for Game of the Year.

Nice!!! Maybe it was worth the wait afterall.

OMFG!!!

I think I predicted 9.6, but that is just amazing!!

Can anyone tell me what games have scored higher than 9.8 (any 10s)??

They didn`t really have to put this in their review, those grown men at IGN sometimes behave like spoiled brats

I think it's a valid complaint, considering the game is in widescreen but it's actually in 4:3 ratio. Pretty stupid. Especially when they said it was anamorphic widescreen months/last year

whine like average poster on GAF probably helps their credibility on Gaming message boards.

faked widescreen? Who wants that? It's basically black bars giving less image instead of full screen and more right? Anyway, not a bad thing but the mark down was justified. Can't wait to play this.

I never liked the RE series, but RE4 just looks freakin sweet. It seems that they changed all of the problems that i had with the series. Ill definitely rent this game(Im poor). Blockbusters elimation of its late fees came just in time. Now i wont have to rush through this game, like i did previously :D

On one hand, I agree that important information, such as a review by a big site, shouldn't merely be contained in an "official" thread. On the other hand, I don't want to read every single thing about a game if there is an official thread. So lets allow a few things to be re-posted, such as IGN and GameSpot reviews, since they seem to spur the most conversation, but keep the rest to the RE thread.

My only nag is, will these damn reviews ever stop faulting single player games?? It's like, a 20 hour, beautifully weaved tale will still ALWAYS get below a 10 and usually at a 9 or lower in lasting appeal. Basically telling developers if you don't got a multiplayer mode you're not gonna get perfect scores, and influencing consumers away. Which I think is a bad message. I love a great single player experience, or great story, and it doesn't need to be padded to the point where the game just goes on and on for the sake of lasting appeal. Hell, I'll play through a well paced game with great moments and great gameplay over an 80 hour game with slightly above average gameplay anyday.

I don't know, some people enjoy re-playing single player games for whatever reason- some because they have unlockable bonuses, some because they have high scores recorded, and some because they just enjoy the game so damn much. And I'm pretty sure if a single player only game has those elements, like RE4, it'll get high scores (8.5 is great for lasting value, especially for a single player game).

The thing is, there really is no comparison to adding multiplayer. While I understand what you're saying, by letting off developers leaving out multiplayer, you're punishing those who put in the time, effort, and money to implement multiplayer.

The game got 9.8. I don't think that final score is going to dissuade too many people from buying it.

I honestly haven't been interested in or played a RE since i think RE2 on the PS. How necessary is it to have played previous RE's to not be missing out?

Something tells me that story isn't the best part of this game, so I don't think your experience would be limited much by a lack of experience with or knowledge of the series.

Remember how Thera was going to play every single Resident Evil game in preparation for RE4? No matter how many people told him it was unnecessary (and likely to be extremely painful), he stuck to his guns.

Maybe that's why he hasn't posted here in months--he's catching up on the series! :lol

When I played the demo of this, it rocked. Better than all the others. The aiming system is 10 times better now. I don't have a Gamecube though. :(

I haven't liked a RE game since the 2nd one. And I haven't liked a survival horror game since SH1. But oddly enough, RE4 seems tempting to me. :(

Since the storyline (from what we can gather) doesn't really relate back to the previous games since Umbrella and the T-Virus have been destoryed, I can't see how not having played the previous games is going to prevent you from enjoying the story in the new game.

If there are past characters appearing in the game like the well known
Ada Wong
you won't "get" as much out of the story not knowning their backgrounds. I think Code Veronica was the first Resident Evil I ever finished, so when Wesker appeared as a bad guy, it didn't really have much of an impact on me not having known his background in the previous games.

EDIT: Great review. I like how they hide the score throughout the review now unless you click a certain link to reveal "further game info". I hated seeing the score before you even started reading the review.

so if it wasn't for a faked widescreen the game would be 10 in graphics. That's impressive for gamecube.

"Resident Evil 4 is not only the most jaw-droppingly beautiful GameCube title to date, it is perhaps the prettiest game on any home console."

Great score I never expected a 9.8. This game will own.
