Orbis & Durango Pricing

Jeez do you want sony bombs again at launch? No way they sell something at this price.

I don't want anything to bomb. But I think the reality is that the specs indicate that these are going to be powerful systems and right now the exchange rates do not favor low prices. Especially when Sony, as a whole, is losing a lot of money and is in a fight for its future.

I expect:

$399 minimum for the base package. $449 minimum for the better package you'll actually want, but likely $499.

$599 maximum price but they will probably go to $549 max just to avoid the whole "FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS" callback.

I'll pay: $299 (In other words, not buying either at launch).

399

And, ugh at the inflation charts. Absolutely meaningless. All electronics were more expensive 20 - 30 years ago. It's useless. You're either competitive with today's options, or the market will ignore you. Consoles no longer exist in a vacuum with their own rules.

You think Sony would realize that pricing a product too high, like the Vita, is a bad idea..

Vita isn't over priced. More of a market change than anything else. If anything the Vita pricing would hint towards a $399.99 price point for Orbis. Which would not be over priced.

Haha, oh wow. Pay $180 a year for online and still have to pay $100 for (I'm guessing) the normally $200 4gb console.

Sad thing is, people probably do this too.

Yeah it is not that good of a deal. Plus a bunch of people have Live Gold subscriptions already. Those are the ones who will upgrade to the next Xbox first. Subscription based purchasing loses its appeal for early adopters.

$350 for ps4.

MS will push the subsidized/contract price. I don't see them advertising the unsubsidized price, much like phones.

To be honest, the specs indicate that will be cheaper. Standard hardware, nothing to be crazy differently to ps360 at the time.

Don't care. It will provide me with more entertainment dollar for dollar than most other things I will spend money on over the course of its useful life.

That is kind of an odd attitude. Wouldn't you prefer a system with the exact same specs/features/etc at $100 or $200 less then if it was priced super high? Being lower would be much better, that way you can use that extra money for more games.

400 PS4 (and I'm in day 1)
350 Xbox (and I'm in day 1)

Given the rumored specs, I'm not buying that Microsoft will subsidize the Xbox due to it being so expensive to make. If they do it, it'll just be to sell a bunch of guaranteed XBL contracts. I was leaning towards buying one and waiting on the other, but it's actually looking like we could have two very different types of boxes being released. I'm interested in both.

Maybe because Kinect will be included with every console and that will make it more expensive.

God damn, as if the best console of all time couldn't get any better - surprised to see it's literally the cheapest priced console at launch of all time.

:'(

Durango - $99 subsized model, Two Year Commitment of some sort.
Durango - $299 non-subsided (edit - maybe $349)

Orbis - $499 model with a smaller HDD
Orbis - $599 with larger HDD

How does the inflation-adjusted chart work chart work? The PS3 is listed as $600 in raw money, $570 with inflation. The Wii, which launched the same month, is listed as $250 in raw money, $285 with inflation.

If you look closely, the PS3, 360, and WiiU have double bars, indicating the different priced SKUs at launch. For each they used the cheaper version when computing the cost after inflation.

$285/250 = $570/500.

Then the market value would be considered over priced. I like my Vita, but there is no way I would ever have paid full price for it. If it wasn't for getting it $60+ off back in July of last year, I prob still wouldn't have bought it.

I know, that was a somewhat selfish statement. Of course, I'd like to see the price as low as possible given the technology packaged into those boxes. It would be wonderful if they were affordable enough to reach a higher installed base fast and enable more developers to jump in and take risks with the promise of high sales numbers.

What I meant to say is, whether it costs $400 or $600, after the time I will spend with said console over the course of 5 year, the $200 difference could be – for me particularly – considered negligible.

£400 would be my absolute limit for either of them, £350 would be better and £300 ideal (thought I can't imagine it).

I only recently bought GTX690 powered PC and to be honest I'm looking to that to keep me gaming long enough for the first round of price drops rolls around. Though a subsidized version would definitely be tempting depending on the contract terms.

Durango will cost $500, with MS attempting to justify it by bundling Kinect 2. Sony, being Sony, will price Orbis at $1000 (two Vitas for controllers and a promise that it's a supercomputer), and wonder why nobody buys it.

There's no way that Sony can launch at the price points they did with the PS3. I'd say $399/£350 is the max that they could realistically get away with. Microsoft will go to a similar level I think.

If there is a subscription based model with ownership guaranteed after the term is over then a lower price point is conceivable ($200). This is also another reason why I think MS wants an "always online" system to ensure subscribing members' XB3 can be remotely banned if they renege on the deal.

Upfront pricing:

XB3: $350 and $400 (followed by asinine pricing of proprietary supplements)

PS4: $400 and $500

Well looking at the graph adjusted for inflation, anything above $450 has been a failure so I don't see either going beyond that.

I agree, and I think Durango will have a gimp version and/or subsidized version, potentially of each. Orbis may have a gimp version but definitely nothing subsidized.

But the more I think about it, I'm not sure what they could really gimp. HDD space kinda hurts their other strategies. Can't really be wifi. I dunno.

All digital version i.e. no drive perhaps?

MS 3 sku's

$199, with a 2 year plan of $15 a month.
$400 base model
$450 premium model aka the one you want.

Sony 2 sku's

$400 base model
$450 premium model aka the one you want.

It's a camera. All phones and tablets have them. I just don't think it adds so much money to the base cost of making the device that it requires subsidies. Looking at all the other rumored specs, they're clearly not overspending on anything else. At least not above and beyond Sony. I don't though. I'm just guessing. I think selling XBL contracts is more important to them than anything else.

I thought it was a camera with a processor now...like original Kinect was. Still no?

PS4 will be 399 with dual cameras included, 720 will be 299 with Kinect. From those leaked specs they should both be profitable at those prices. I expect both to have a Premium SKU with a much larger HDD than the low price versions.

450-500 will be just perfect. Anything under that makes it a cheap, weak and pointless box. Anything over that I'll have to wait for a price drop.
