I don't watch the Oscars because:

A) Too long. Almost 4 hours, sitting through ads along the way? Nope.
B) I rarely watch any of the nominated films, so I don't give a rat's ass about who wins.

I followed on Twitter for awhile, but even lost interest that way.

I wanted to watch it, but ABC isn't available in my area!
When are networks going to stream online with ads?

Cord cutting can be a bitch sometimes.

Was it an indie film?

Most nominees for the Oscars flood Hollywood with ads in an attempt to influence the academy because a nomination alone can lead to a massive increase in profits.

It's a movie that got a small release but a massive following, mainly from the the black community, to the point where the Oscars couldn't ignore it.

Doesn't help they nominate movies no one has seen. Half of them didn't even play in my city.

The shilling of trailers is one of the many reasons The Game Awards are not great. On a night where they're supposed to be honoring the best of the year they still make sure to try to sell you on the NEXT BIG THING.

Nah dude, nobody would watch if it weren't for those. The DICE Awards are the equivalent to the Oscars for the gaming industry. TGA is the MTV Movie Awards but still relevant.

Bring back Letterman.

Not that he cared much for what people thought of him when he was in his prime, but a Letterman that has absolutely no shits left to give, and has no obligation to kiss Hollywood's ass in the slightest would be amazing.

I liked the first time he hosted too.

It works for a 20 minute comedy show but loses its charm in a four hour telecast.

They shouldn't change a thing and be happy with the viewers they have. They should thank God viewership hasn't halved in 9 years considering how far streaming has come to distract America from a fucking 3.5 hour ceremony that ends in the dead of night for half the viewers.

Stream that shit – and I mean really stream it, not lock it behind a cable subscription - or be prepared to loose even more viewers. There is no third choice.

Let's see...
It's boring.
It's only on cable.
The awards mean nothing, since they're bought, not won.
What possible reason could people have for watching?

Us millennials too busy busting our asses at work and school at the same time and in spare time working ground level to fix all the shit constantly getting fucked up from above to care about some rich fuckers awarding themselves for their outstanding work in crafting storytime distractions we can't afford (money or time) to go out and watch.

Edit: Oh, also we don't even watch network TV.

I think Kimmel may be the closest we get to someone who doesn't care.

Maybe Norm...

Runs too late for me to even bother to watch, anyway.

I gotta get up early on Monday mornings, I'm not watching past midnight. I'm usually in bed by that point.

Doesn't surprise me. Most people I know don't care. Out of those who do most just get the results from social media or what not and watch the interesting clips on Youtube. Only one person i know will actually sit down and watch the whole thing.

The goal of Oscars is not viewership, it's to honor the best movies.

What you describe seems horrible.

And when were they dominated my movies with mass appeal? Not in my lifetime.

This thread is about viewership, that's why I mentioned more popular movies getting more attention.

So this is taking a while and I'll try to update later, but here is domestic box office ranking for best picture noms 1980-1990 compared to this year. Also having more nominees should help 2017, but even so it's an outlier.

2017- 18, 20, 29, 46, 57

80- 1- 4- 19- 35- 41
81- 7- 11- 25- 27- 33
82- 1, 2, 7, 13, 55
83- 1, 2, 11, 12, 56
84- 2, 13, 33, 78, 100
85- 12, 24, 25, 34, 47
86- 4, 5, 8, 32, 53
87- 3, 30, 32, 44, 52
88- 2, 5, 18, 25, 88
89- 1, 11, 32, 33, 100+
90- 8, 10, 17, 19, 68
