Btw, when these science dudes connected to kaiju's brain, monsters acquired all memories/knowledge of humans, no? So, can kaijus create their own robots? Imagine kaiju lvl5 in a fucking jaeger suit.

That would be a big Jaeger. 0_0

But no, they just got the memories and knowledge of those two particular humans, and neither of them is involved in building jaegers. The reason the humans were able to learn more about the kaiju from a single specimen was that the kaiju share information as a hive mind (Probably to make them easier to control as weapons). Humans don't, so the aliens only learned stuff like that one scientist's probability calculations.

Great fucking movie. Cherno <3 Too bad he didn't get time to shine. I would've loved seeing them and CT kick more ass.

That whole scene was about finding compatibility between the pilots and how they could get in rhythm during a fight and keep the pace, not necessarily representative of the moves they were going to perform. The mechas weren't that agile anyway, so I'm not sure a lot of those moves could be performed the same way.

Mark6 jaegers.

My body is ready.

this movie is SUCH a fucking fun watch, i was really entertained throughout the whole thing..just sat back didn't think and embraced the amazing battles

hope it makes tons of money for a sequel

So, I didn't expect a whole lot of this movie since I've never been a big fan of GDT, with the exception of Pan's Labyrinth (I tried watching the Hellboy movies, but fell asleep in the first one, and barely made it 20 minutes into the sequel), but I recognize that he is a talented director, and on the strength of PL, I decided to watch it in the native way it was shot, 2D.

I ended up really enjoying it. I loved the brief montage setup at the beginning explaining the world, I thought the effects were fairly incredible and had sufficient weight to them (something almost never seen in movies anymore thanks to the sad takeover of CG effects), and I loved the music. I also loved that the action was comprehensible and traditionally shot; not like the crap in Superman, Transformers, or whatever. In that regard, it reminded me fondly of Avatar where you can tell a director who knows how to stage events and is confident in himself and his effects work, and doesn't feel the need to chop everything up in the editing to make it "exciting" or in close-up to mask their incompetence.

The movie in one respect reminded me of Starship Troopers in the way it used primarily unfamiliar faces for its leads, peppered with a couple of "known" people who are more familiar in television roles. I thought the banter between characters was sufficient for a blockbuster, especially the two scientists, and enough emotional care and consideration was given to almost every character (possible exception is the father/son dynamic of the two Aussies that is almost glossed over). I like that it is an international effort without feeling preachy or devised by marketing potential in certain territories (unlike the Bejing scene in Looper or the extra shot footage of Iron Man 3 in China).

As for things I didn't like.

1: I didn't like some of the jokey material, notably the sight gags like the metal ball contraption on the office desk that gets knocked by the two fighting monsters.

2: I didn't like the fact that during the final fight, the main male lead is doing ALL of the talking/narration, presumably because the accent of the Asian lady was too strong for audiences to understand over the loud music/noise of the climactic battle. I wish she interacted more during those scenes since she is equal partner. I understand the logistics of it for film audiences, but it was kind of silly after a while to hear him explain everything and be the only one talking.

2b: I liked that they used subtitles for some of the dialogue of other countries, like Russia and China. However, I wished we learned more about these other characters as well. It would have increased my believability of the world, and develop the whole idea that "the world is fighting" rather than the English speaking countries with a few extras. Still, nice to see them included at all.

3: I had a logic issue, very minor, during his escape scene; why is it that he needs to be cloaked to enter the dimensional tube, but not upon exiting?

4: I didn't like Ron Perlman at all, thought he was stupid, didn't like his "death" scene, and the flat mid-credit joke where he lives after all.

I think this is the only action movie so far this year that I'd like to see for a second time, and I'd certainly hope a sequel is possible. There's enough time jumps that it seems they could fill in some of the years prior to this ending, or maybe show the first emergence of the creatures, the failed dogfights shown in the beginning, the creation of the first robot, and end with its triumph of its first defeat which will pave the way to the eventual Jager program.

Last note, it's refreshing seeing the entire color pallet being used in a movie today. There's so many purples and pinks and yellows and reds and greens throughout the movie in a believable, realized world. It's also refreshing to not have a movie with a dumb, predictable twist (Star Trek Into Darkness) or insult the audience by explaining away important information in the last few seconds of a film (Iron Man 3).

This film is SO GOOD. SO GOOD! Best film I've seen this year along with Upstream Color.

I REALLY wish we got to see Striker Eureka fight a little more, but it's all gravy. Gipsy Danger's performance made up for it.

I saw it in a theater that used RealD Cinema and Dolby Atmos. God DAMN! For post-processed 3D, it sure was impressive! I haven't been so impressed with 3D in a film since Avatar. Just imagine if this film was recorded at 48 frames/second! Dear god, that would be icing on the cake. The sound was incredible, too!

A hypothetical sequel should have more agile robots, Eva style. That's all I can think a sequel could bring.

Coyote Tango was supposed to be pretty fast for a Jaeger due to it having very little heavy protection. However other than the flashbacks we did not see it in action.

since this is the Spoiler thread I'll ask this here

The Aliens at the end looked a bit like the ID4 aliens LOL

the question is so what you collapse the gate, they had the technology since the dinosaurs they are the ones who took them out, and had the patience to wait for the planet to be ripe, why can't they wait humans out why can't they just open the gate back up at a later time

maybe I am asking too much from a dumb action movie which was not suppose to be deep at all but they should not have talked about them taking out the dinosaurs and waiting for Earth to get to a point when they felt it was the right time to come and harvest.

There won't be much left of the planet if they wait for humans to go extinct.

I saw the film a second time today.

Observations:
-The bits in the middle of the film zoomed by a lot quicker on the second viewing.
-Hunnam's voice was more noticeably grating on this viewing... I found him tolerable last night, but at any moment that he was not yelling out attack names he was just a really bad actor. Maybe they cast him solely on his ability to yell out attacks. :lol
-Cherno getting destroyed still gave me chills. Such a perfectly implemented visual moment. And Crimson... man, seeing the claws rip into the pilot area is intense.

The only reason the science dudes found out so much from that one kaiju was because apparently they have a "hive" mind, connected between all the kaijus. Humans don't, so the kaijus only got the memories/knowledge of the two scientist dudes.

The awesome thing about this movie is sequels don't NEED the lead actors to return. Set it 20-30 years later and give us better ones (:

CERNO ALPHA
SWORD
ESCAPE PODS.

I loved everything about this.

Okay, had more time to think about it. (Also that guy said something about my avatar...Jet Jaguar is Godlike!!! He reprograms himself to change size and shakes Godzilla's hand! Bryan Singer's Superman lies in a hospital bed for the finale....so shut up!!! ;) I just kid :))

Firstly, big props to GDT for making this movie (without the poison that plagues Transformers) and the attention to detail on the Kaiju and Jagers. Also, it was nice to see well shot action scenes as opposed to incompetence covering quick edits-extreme close ups-lens flare-shaky cam etc. I imagine if I saw this as a 10 year old, I would be in heaven.

Of course excellent use of effects and CGI work, use of colour and overall design. Also, Rinko Kikuchi's character was well done in terms of putting her right at the forefront (instead of some random piece of ass in front a nice GM car). I enjoyed her performance too.

The negative part(s) really boil down to the lead character and the script. I will add that I don't think that GDT is (entirely) at fault here, but more so the result of a large budget and the necessary studio expectations that come attached with that.

The lead character Rally and the Australian guy, who plays the dick came across as a crap Maverick and Iceman impression. (Another issue is the look of both of these guys; it's way too similar).

Idris Elba put in a solid/good performance given what he had to work with, but the character felt like Bruce Willis (from Armageddon...dat sacrifice and daughter ting) mixed with Billy Bob Thornton (Armageddon...dat injury) mixed with the final revenge of the guy who was raped by the aliens in Independence Day 10 years before, well, the invasion proper.

The scientists were alright, though the guy with glasses reminded me of Broderick in Godzilla (dat worm/mum theory....dat drift/hive mind theory).

Ron Perlman was great (outside the design, jagers and kaijus, his scenes came across as the most GDT, whereas the remaining human element felt like it was made to appease the studio(s)).

I can't remember the music... :/

It would be awesome to see this had GDT had Pan's Labyrinth level of control, but all things considered, it was still an enjoyable movie and I very much appreciate GDT efforts! (Probably a blu-ray purchase day 0).

All imo.

Edit: When that Kaiju opened its wings and flew...man that sequence...beautiful.

Just got back from seeing it on IMAX (real screen, not the various fakes in the city). It was quite insane for my first viewing of such a large screen, plus the sheer impact of the effects and sounds in this movie. I want to see it again, but on a regular screen. It was almost too much to take in at once. I could not follow parts of the action. I didn't care for the lead actor, but almost everyone else was fine even if a bit campy.

I was literally thinking "Wait, I think there's a winged Kaiju on the trailers..." and then WHAM, wings.

Same here. I was thinking the winged kaiju would be the final because it looked massive in the trailers and if the "Walls of Life" actually worked on normal kaiju, then obviously a flying one would have no problem.

Earlier when Gypsy is using that tanker as a club, I thought "why the hell don't they have solid weapons?" Whoever said the movie is full of homages to anime and Super Sentai was not kidding. The entire theater went crazy over the sword. That was some Voltron/Megazord shit. My favorite moment was the Giant Robo throwback: all the power's been knocked out and the newer digital Jaeger is out cold. No worries! Our older last bot is nuclear powered! It was such a nice touch.

The reveal of the Category 5 Kaiju was like a final boss fight. It's cliched to say this, but it really did feel epic.

I'm sold on the need for a sequel. Gypsy's explosion was nowhere near big enough to take out all of the aliens; only enough to destroy that portal and set them back for a number of years. Earth goes on the attack with the scientists' newly acquired knowledge and better Jaegers (lots of room for improvement after encountering Category 4 and up), perhaps after fending off new portals.

Would you all want faster mechs in the sequel that utilize their rocket boosters and projectile weapons more?

I'd like a continued mixture. I want an army of lumbering Chernos there to do the serious damage and an army of slightly smaller but more agile Strikers to zip around.

I almost feel like the budget was the thing holding those Jaegers back. It just seemed like the script was setting them up for their time and glory, but they just ran out of money to keep their appearances up or something. Does that make even a lick of sense? We already know other Jaegers were kept from this movie because of budgetary reasons.

Also, a girl I know just asked what Pacific Rim was. Sigh.

I might even change my Kaz-man avatar to something more Rim-related.
You know what to do!

Tesla punch that girl

No. I want prequels revolving around the jaegers we saw. Something going off Tales from year Zero.

I love the way you think.

There were a lot of great punches in this film, but the award for best has to go to Cherno.

And we know that if the aliens did decide to come back they are not going to bother sending category 3 or 4 kaijus to the surface. It's going to be cat5s all day every day and we'll need some heavy duty jaegers for when that shit goes down.

I really enjoyed the movie but have one main complaint. They really could have used a jaeger fight in the middle of the movie. After the first fight it went basically to the end of the movie before we got another real fight. They could have had a fight showing what either the Russian or Chinese jaeger could do in the middle and it would have been perfect.

Oh and i see someone else already mentioned it but why did they need a cloak to get into the rift but going the other way with the escape pods it was cool without one?

I dunno, it's like one of those fishing traps. Can go in but not out. Except the opposite. Yeah.

It may be a powered barrier that exists only on the Earth side. The aliens have likely never been threatened and see no need to prevent anything from going through on their side, seeing as they're the only ones who use it,

Cherno's "death" really was the saddest. It was dwarfed by those Category 4s and they sorta killed it in a gory way like a person. Held underwater to drown before getting crushed a whimpering explosion underwater.

Did the movie say there were once 35 Jaegers? The 5-year gap would make a great, but depressing, comic series on how it dwindled down to two operational robots, the new Striker model and the revamped Gypsy.

There have been a total of 35 built, yes, I think I remember hearing that number as well. The problem I assume is that early models were probably torn apart or just unsable after a first fight.

I walked out of the movie both disappointed and in awe at the same time.

I think the Jaegers & Kaiju's were fucking outstanding. Without a doubt watching some of the Jaegers get torn apart was incredible and horrifying at the same time - easily some of the best action I've ever seen in a movie.

I think outside of that the movie had some serious flaws. Charlie Hunnam is a terrible actor. The moment I saw him walking like his Sons of Anarchy home-boy I was immediately put off. Watching him stand there holding his belt buckle was cringe-worthy.
The dude with the massive sideburns who was 'monitoring' the neural-handshakes etc was just terrible.
As an Australian - the Striker Eureka team were giving me a headache at just how awful the accents were.
I couldn't stand the two scientists either - I think outside of the the 'math = a double event, then triple event' set-up, those characters were completely useless. The Kaiju/human drift story was poorly done - and more annoyingly even by wasting time setting up that story arc - it was still just a magical epiphany (as in, the audience don't actually get to see/hear anything really - the scientist just suddenly 'knows' some shit).

Credit to Mako & Ron Perlmans characters. Both pretty good performances - good to see a woman lead character who wasn't weak shit and running away screaming from the bad guys. Ron Perlman got some good laughs - and the after credits scene was pretty cool.

I think the Jaegers themselves were so impressively done - that Michael Bay and the like have to go back to the drawing board after Pacific Rim. Every shot that involved them was incredible. The scale and weight of each of them was conveyed so perfectly. When Cherno got dropped - you fucking knew that Mark 1 piece of shit was going to be brutal. Gipsy (Gypsy?) Danger was pretty awesome - ultimately nothing too special, but quite fast. Striker Eureka was great - a bit of shame that it was under utilised. I'm disappointed that the Commander & Striker Eureka were essentially deadweight in the final battle - they did all of 2-3 moves, sliced some shit and then 'boom'. Crimson Typhoon & the triplets were a massive wasted opportunity I thought. The pilots were merely names with little to no dialogue, and then in the battle, despite have the blades & the awesome flip move - they were gone in what felt like 5 seconds.

There were 3 parts of the movie that stood out to me that negatively & substantially impacted the movie for me.
1. The Commander saving Mako as a child - the fucking scene where he exited the cockpit and had the sun behind him. Awful, as a director GDT should be ashamed of that scene.

2. Charlie Hunnam's character giving some stupid dialogue towards the end about only focusing on the past - and looking forward to the future or some shit. Awful, director, scrip-writers etc. should all be fucking ashamed of that one.

3. Sword button. What the fuck was that about. So the main character, who has used this Jaeger in several battles - has no idea the sword exists (even going so far as to say, we're out of options).
Okay. Let's assume this was added when Mako & Co. rebuilt Danger.
Mako who is piloting a Jaeger for the first time is the one who comes up with the idea and knows about it.
Okay. Again let's assume she knows about it and waited far too long to mention it.
It's a gigantic red button that says Sword - and both of them missed it and only decided to try it when they were well and truly fucked (and let's face it, it wasn't an ideal time to try the weapon).
But not 5 minutes before that - they decided to use a Tanker as a club... I could only imagine what short work they would have made of those Kaiju had they just swung that fucker around to begin with.
Half the cinema groaned when they hit the sword button - and I think in a movie about semi-celebrities piloting gigantic robots that fight gigantic aliens that were responsible for dinosaurs that emerge from a portal underwater - it was ridiculous.
ALL OF THAT SAID - I can't wait to buy the Blu-Ray and rewatch it.

The guy only managed to do neuron calibration when he was inside the jaeger, and him going out on that fight wasn't even planned/expected.

The sword was never part of Gipsy Danger's original design. It was only added after Raleigh came back that's why he didn't know about it. Or something. As if they wouldn't tell him lol.

Cherno was the jaeger I was most excited to see and despite the short screen time I was not disappointed. Looked amazing, had amazing pilots, ha the best most impactful hits. And that taunt, warming up them tesla fists, damn!

Giant cat5 kaiju vs. Cherno alpha army. Chernos surround and finally we see the incinerators in action!

Yeah, but they had drifted in the test sequence. He was in her head, and should have known everything about Gypsy that she did.

The way this movie works is that you desperately don't think about it. The moment you start questioning, you realize you sat through 90 minutes of melodrama and prattle for maybe 40 minutes of absolute awesome. (As I stated earlier, I enjoyed the action sequences, but I found much of the rest filler preventing me from seeing my robots and monsters)

Oh, and to address the comment about Cherno Alpha: it had to be melted by base, as the kaiju are all ammonia based. (Which leads to a question of why wait for the human pollution, which is mostly more acidic-I'm thinking about the movie again. Stop.)

I assumed that - I acknowledged it in my post. I'm just saying, Mako was a fucking bitch if she waited until after they had used a tanker as a club, and then waited until they were effectively dead - before smashing the sword button.

The guy only managed to do neuron calibration when he was inside the jaeger, and him going out on that fight wasn't even planned/expected.

Wut.

Ramin Djawadi ripping off his own work on Iron Man. That's what the music was for me. Meh.

I agree, but only the main theme/guitar riff I would say. The rest of it was surprisingly good in context. Not his best work and nothing I would listen to regularly, but I was pleasantly surprised at how it worked well within the movie after listening to it on YT and not liking it that much.
