Barkhul, the Cycloner in Daresso's dream. He calls you little piggie. There's a map called Pit that uses the same tileset and has a stronger version of him as the boss. Sketchy fight because of all the trash mobs.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Level 78, and dozing off every 2 minutes... i think I'm out for today

edit: guess I'm not!

Okay that boss in act 4, grand arena was one of the most challenging ones... just insane burst.

Can't believe I made it.

I've been very happy to get the skill point from the spirit in the mines and not touch act 4 again and just do maps. The big act 4 bosses except for Vaal are rip city.

Yeah, everything has changed and dont underestimate Act 4 difficulty.

I beat merciless Daresso's Dream at 67 with my marauder. Good gravy. Ordinarily I don't portal scum but without any adds flasks vanish in seconds.

So how do I progress through maps? Do I just run magic 68 maps until I get a bunch of 69s then move up like that? When should I start rare ones?

67 seems really fucking impressive, god damn.

You really don't need to start alching and chiseling maps until 73 or so. I would just take an easy 68 like grotto or crypt, use a transmute on it and then alteration orb it until you get a set or prefixes you can handle. Inside the map you'll get a lot of enemies and there's a chance for more maps to drop including higher level maps from rares/magic mobs and that's how you build your map pool.

Note that you get high XP efficiency for another 10-11 levels just by running 68s and 69s, so do that.

edit : a good general tip on Tempest is to have an alternate quicksilver flask prepared that removes chill. This makes running frozen ground tempests MUCH less annoying.

You can run rare maps whenever you want. It's all up to the mods on the map. You have to know what you character can and can't handle. Another map that people overlook for beginning is tropical island. Super easy lvl 68 map. Try to get twin bosses since the boss is super easy. All you need is some way to mitigate physical damage for that boss. Make sure you know what your character can and can't handle.

I hate frozen ground so much I don't run them. I really hate anything that slows me down. Of course that is unless I get really awesome rolls that I can handle.

Just ripped at 62 to Vaal Oversoul, thought he was doing his wrecking ball facing north, so ran south.... straight into the middle of it :(

I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with the droprate on maps, I've only found a single 72 map so far, alch'd/chiseled it, and all I got out of it was a single 68 map. Now I'm back to running 70 maps because anything higher than that just doesn't seem to want to drop. I can't imagine actually getting to the higher map tiers like this.

Welcome to PoE mapping you need to
spend alot of orbs to maintain higher maps and over 72/73 unless you have a solid mapping group then you'll be buying your maps.

PoE in a nutshell. It takes a lot... A LOT of time to update and shit.

Booted up my laptop to a 476kb update for Path of Exile on Steam last night. Took 20 minutes. As Yoshi says, it takes a lot of time for updates, not necessarily for them to download, but for the update to actually be preallocated and applied to the game files themselves.

Is this on Tempest? If so you can 72 maps for pretty cheap (less than the cost of 4 chisels and an alch) these days. People generally like to keep 5-6 of each map in case of corrupting/tormented ghost tempest but the 90+s have 72-73 maps coming out their ears. I'd imagine it would be even more abundant on Warbands.

Nah, I'm playing on Warbands. I've only recently started playing as well so I'm pretty low on consumables.

I dunno, I just sort of expected to be doing maps that were of my level. Instead I am running maps that are 10+ levels below my character because the higher level content isn't dropping. Is there any specific reasoning for making the droprates on maps so low? I initially got the impression that GGG was pretty on top of things.

They don't want it to be easy, since that's all the endgame they have. Nobody gives a shit about PvP and racing doesn't make people buy stash tabs, skill effects or skins. Pretty sure they don't like how quickly some people got to 100 in recent leagues, even if those are streamers that play 10+ hours a day.

That said, I don't like the recent change of making +2 map drops boss only.

Hey guys, newbie question incoming...

I just started PoE with some friends on the standard non-HC league (not my choice) and really enjoying my tornado shot ranger. I'm around level 57 now in act 4 cruel and just picked up my first 5 link white item (vile staff). I read some guides that said to pick up all 5 linked items to sell but I'm not having any luck in trade chat.

The amount of stuff in this game is a bit overwhelming so I just want to check if that item is worthless and if I should really be picking up all 5 or 6 linked items to sell. I'm running low on stash place as it is lol. Thanks!

5L chest armours are much more desireable than 2H weapons, especially such low level ones. Can't think of anything particularly interesting anyone could do with it outside of trying for +1 gem level with +2 fire gems for a summon raging spirits build, but anyone who wants that can just buy it directly, or buy a higher level base item to roll that (which can roll other beneficial mods in higher ranges).

There are a lot of 5L staffs on the market that will probably never move (not even on hardcore, where people take their stuff to the afterlife):

Lost my lv63 Ice Crash Maurader last night. Was playing late at night when I should have been in bed. Reached lv63, was just finding waypoints in Act 2 Merciless before bed when I saw a Tormented Spirit flying around. Chased after it and ran into an elite mob - can't remember his name, it's the bow guy with bear traps. Dude was wrecking me but I kept going back to town and coming back. At one point I said fuck it, I can barely get close to him....but then I decided to give it one more shot. Returned to the zone, ran into a bear trap and then got 3 shot before I could use flasks properly.

If not for that there's no doubt in my mind I would have gotten to maps. I pretty much breezed through Cruel and Merciless. Oh well. I might just recreate the same 2H build again or try a 1H one. At least I have a shit ton of currency and leveling gear in the stash.

I started playing again recently, act 4 was really good. I had a card drop which I learned is traded in for items, how rare are cards that are for those unique items like Voll's Devotion?

Lost my lv63 Ice Crash

I'm 100% convinced Ice Crash is a softcore or leveling build right now. It works fine for some period of time then it absolutely poops on your face in spectacular fashion in HC. Cyclone does as muich if not more damage and much more importantly keeps you moving.

edit: just to elaborate a bit more:

- ice crash does very poor damage on non-trash outside of its inner ring, so you have to be kissing yellows and bosses while standing still to do damage.
- super low attack speeds make it terrible for leech outside of trash. Reave and cyclone have mechanics that make them a bit better in this regard.
- physical damage will almost always outperform elemental damage given near equal gemming, which is what ice crash has vs. cyclone/reave
- you really need a 5L to get decent damage at all with it in maps, and a 6L becomes an actual necessary thing for 72+ maps once you stop trying to cheat fortify on leap slam. Friends don't let friends run fortify on movement abilities in HC.
- did I mention the part where you are a immobile sitting duck with a long, messy attack animation at point blank range?

Go reave for the range and vaal gem cooldown for extra range, or go cyclone for the safety from movement.

It's certainly flawed. I think they intend you to go for very big but slow hits, which would explain why it costs so much to cast. Unfortunately that's almost always a stupid idea in this game, but I guess whoever designed it sees it differently. I can't imagine playing this with a squishier character or without endurance charges. Temp Chains + AA is a godsend, too.

My only way to get more damage on my 81 Templar right now is a better weapon or a 5L, none of which is going to happen soon unless I get lucky. At least I 6-socketed my chest rather quickly.

I put Fortify on my single target and only use it for bosses. Against trash and rares, Enduring Cry alone (4 charges, going for 5) works OK, with a swig of Granite here and there, but it's sketchy. I get stunned out of the animation a lot, even with Faster Attacks. Unwavering Stance might become a necessity.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Brittle Emperor sells for 2ex per card and you need 8 for the set.

My build used Heavy Strike for bosses (I had Fortify, Added Fire Dmg and Weapon Ele Dmg support gems).

In terms of using Ice Crash, I was as mobile as possible - especially in Act 4 where ranged mobs can really fuck you if you aren't paying attention. Had Leap Slam as well. Pretty good defenses, res capped, etc. I definitely agree it's somewhat of a leveling build. It's basically the new, more effective Ground Slam build.

I have Ice crash hit about 17-18k on my 1-h character before I ripped. I also ran with Elemental weakness. I had a 6-l, but I ran with: Ice Crash, Weapon Ele, Melee Physical, Fortify, Physical to Lightning, Life Leech.

Physical to lightning is OP.

It was a pure elemental build, and worked pretty well, but I only got up to 74 maps. Edit: Some bosses were still a bit NOPE, becasue melee.

I had nearly 90% armour w/ grace, 7 Endurance Charges, 36% block rate, Fortify, and Arctic Armour, but it worked, and I ripped before I felt I got to see it really take off, (didn't invest in weapon specific nodes, and I prioritized survival nodes).

I got the Templar Aura nodes and ran with Clarity on blood magic, but this way I could run different ~100% aura combinations depending on map. Grace/Hatred/Herald of Ash/Arctic Armour. Usually it was Arctic Armour/Herald of Ash/Grace. If I was in farm mode: Hatred/Grace, or sometimes Hatred/Herald of Ash/AA.

I was thinking of going 2-hand this time around, and getting a bit more damage at the cost of block/less armour.

So, I'm finally actually digging into the endgame stuff for the first time since the awakening, and it really makes me want to jump on the totem bandwagon. With the new bosses, if you're relying on active skills, you have to spend a lot of your time dodging and not doing damage, and rely on windows of opportunity to be able to stand still and throw out your attacks or spells. Even cycloners have to step away quite often when the "you must dodge this" attacks show up. But with totems, you just plop them down and they'll happily keep dps'ing for you while you run around in a circle to dodge shit. I'm rather tempted to switch...

Also, anyone else ever get kicked back to login for "too many actions"? I do click a lot when I use repeated short-distance cyclones - but this never happened to me before the latest expansion.

I still wish GGG didn't change the behavior of the "attack in place" button with "move-only". Maybe I should make an ahk script that pairs "attack in place" automatically with "use skill", the way I like it - I wonder if it'd be allowed?

Rebuilt my 2H build, but I'm leveling with Sweep for now before switching to Ice Crash. Going super fast so far thanks to some leveling gear I had, including this.
M2HqGVD.png

Been using it since around lv12 or so, I'm currently lv29 lol.

I decided to give tempest a shot and just hit act 4. Should I look to do some trading now? I haven't been below 50% health more than 2 times at most but the Malachai fight has me terrified. Still running around with fire totem. I'm far enough into the passive tree to get my build going but my finances are still too shabby. Saw a quill rain go for 1 alchemy, must have missed out by a minute. I looked it up when I started the character. Prices seemed to have went up a bit. There were quite a few more 1-2 chaos ones

If I'm online on 'FollowMeOnHornPub' , I'd be happy to throw you some starter chaos.

My suggestion would be to no worry too much about gear until act 3 or so cruel. Don't be afraid to take resist nodes on the passive tree while leveling provided that you aren't pathing a lot to get them, they really help mitigate the shit gear you wind up running around in early on.

The big spike in difficulty on cruel is act 3. There's lots of stuff there that can gib you-Perpetus in city of Sarn,Piety's temple and beyond. But as long as you have some decent rares you should be OK.Act 4 cruel is a whole other beast though, shit there can be nasty. I would HIGHLY suggest paying 1c for a cruel Malachai kill if you aren't twink geared, that fight is awful.

It's been exactly 9 minutes and 12 seconds since I started the game. Still hasn't loaded.

This is honestly half the reason why I don't want to start the game up when I wake up in the morning. It is literally game breaking.

Edit: there we go! Started at 14 minutes

The best class build guides are on the official class forums, and items to keep or sell is a long list that I'm still learning

God bless the Malachai nerf. Holy shit that was easy. I was legit shitting my pants before the fight and then it got to a point where I was like, "wait a minute" when I hadn't dropped below half health from anything. I did it with my ranger in Warbands and once it got to the point where the swirling thing came out with the mines the whole damn screen one shot me. Went in super tanky (2.2k health, 50% phys dr) and ran around like a little girl while my flame totem secured the win. First time I've finished an ARPG on hardcore

So for a beginner who's just about to start playing this seriously, where should I go look for proper builds/what items to keep or sell..etc?

Depends what you wanna do (melee, ranged, caster, summoner) but if you're gonna browse the forum keep an eye out for the busier build threads that highlight being cheap and don't require any expensive uniques. Guide makers will usually point out the kind of investment required.
