"PC is decimating console, just through price" - Romero

What I meant by custom is that if 90% of the pubs discount their games in a sale, you pretty much have to do it too, no matter what the data says. And it's your answer, as you just said "they do it, so it must be good", which is a non-answer.

Welp, seems like you have all the answers then. You don't know so no one can know. Not even those that actually do know.

Good to know.

A sale at $5 is better than no sale. And a $5 sale is better than a used $40 purchase at Gamestop for developers.

Absolutely.

I've been first and foremost a PC gamer since the mid 90's, but I still enjoyed console gaming since the Japanese dominance of the software market provided a genuinely different experience. The 360 caused a paradigm shift which pushed Japanese developers away from the global market, and those who remained focused more on demographics that were too niche for my liking (like shmups turning exclusively into bullet hells). I never saw a reason to play watered down versions of the same types of games I used to play on the PC, so the last console I owned was a Gamecube.

Ironically, now several of my old cherished Japanese devs are starting to see a lot more value in putting their games on PC such as SNK and Treasure.

In terms of the market responding to these price and model signals, I feel like this is more hopeful than predictive. The PC has been a great place to game long before the current circumstances, and the types of games under the freemium model tend to skew toward time-sinks more than what I'd call the blockbuster releases that are especially popular on home consoles. Multiplayer shooters are closer to the time-sink style games, so that's one segment that could shift in exactly the direction Romero is describing.

He's right. Closed systems just can't keep up anymore. Also, with PC you have the biggest games (LOL and DOTA) plus you get to play the vast majority of console games, only at better resolution and framerate. PC is just so good right now.

PC gamers don't re-pay for the same game at a higher res because they don't ever need to.

can you direct me to this version of kotor 2 that doesn't necessitate downgrading to a buggier release of the game to enable widescreen support

or this copy of the sims 2 that isn't locked at 800x600 on my system despite applying the "fix" that involves screwing around in the config settings

I really hate the PC master race Propaganda bull shit. There been multiple surveys that have shown. Around 70% of the gaming pc's out there are Shitty HP Wal-Mart pc's,and yes the consoles are better than those. Just because your favorite youtuber has a bad ass PC doesn't mean you can brag that PC master is better. Another thing PC master race is a fucking disgusting name to identify your group.

That's kind of a separate point (especially considering the differences between both markets, and where the revenue goes within them), but regardless high-selling individual games does not equate to a healthy industry at large. As Opiate usually points out GTAV broke numerous records for best selling game, but 2013 saw an overall drop in game sales, with 2014 looking to be the same there looking at the NPD and PAL threads. While the big publishers will still see success with their homogenous and risk-averse products, I definitely don't think these new and disruptive business models should be downplayed considering the industry at large. Unless you basically want to play the same type of game every year.

Also the Wii U bombed and people here have concerns about the potential future of the XBO as well. We'll see about how those pan out, but I definitely expect a contraction overall.

Yes, but the thing is that I don't think that PC is "decimating" consoles, I think that it is more a consolidation of PC gaming as a strong option, which is always good for the industry, to have better competition. 2013 sales droped, but maybe it was because the new consoles were about to be lauched, also we have to see all of it as a whole with the economy together.

Here in SA last year was an increase of consoles and games selling, because they were cheaper, this year as well, so I think that there are different factors to each region have a drop or increase of sells. I don't think that PC is the stronger there.

Who is this even directed at? Nobody is unironically using "PC master race" in this thread.

This is why it was ridiculous that all retail games didn't have a digital version on consoles last gen. I THINK they do now on all current platforms? Some 3DS games excepted maybe. Until a year ago, there was no way to buy Earthbound and give money to the original developers/publisher. Despite it's high price it all went to everyone but Nintendo.

"PC Gaming Master Race" started out as a degradatory term by Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation, which was playfully adopted in a meme-ish sort of way. But when it spawns artwork like this, it's hard to not take it to heart ;)

Comparing this to the "deal with it" situation if you want to even attempt to play Bungie, surrounding their current FoV choice. On PC, someone will find a way to increase it, but on console, I have to play and pretend I'm not getting nauseous when I turn quickly.

He is right, my PC is the same one from 1998, unlike consoles that are completely different machines every 5-6 years.

I always wondered how PC elitists could consider themselves a master race when they are the ones that generate the largest stigma within our industry.

It's amazing how serious people take this joke.

You guys have it all wrong, people who play on [insert least favorite platform] are the ones who are actually comparable to genocidal fascists. This isn't hard to understand.

Please elaborate.

Okay

There you go.

The best thing about PC gaming isn't the freedom or the graphics or the prices. It's the mountains of salt that make threads like this so great.

It doesn't help that the new consoles are underpowered in relation to comparable PC hardware when compared to previous console generations. Nowadays you can drop a few hundreds bucks on a few years old PC and match or outperform the new consoles. My PC's main parts are 5 years old, and all I've done is a mid-range graphics card update a year ago and it runs multiplats better than my new PS4.

Previous generations had console hardware much stronger in relation to PC hardware where it made more sense to invest money in them, you'd be getting strong multiplat performance for a long while before PC hardware prices matched and beat them. This time around it was right out of the gate. It basically leaves me with no scenario in which I'm going to buy a multiplatform game on the console rather than PC, there is just too many advantages on the PC side this time. Not to mention being cheaper.
