Unlike JRPG's, where a developer can use SNES sprites and get a 9? Or no shadows? Yeah.
Thank you. You demonstrated my distaste for the treatment of the FPS genre perfectly. Whilst I listed gameplay reasons as my primary complaints towards how reviewers view the genre, for your example, you only list aesthetics.

The age-old gaming question arises. Oh, and what games are you using as an example? I'm curious.

So is every option from the PD64 multiplayer in PD0? And is there a soundtrack-list like in PD64? And how is king of the hill in PD0?

Please answer these Questions and you will receive my love.

My comment wasn't just directed at PDZ, but rather how I feel Western journalists rate first person shooters in general, with PDZ just being a continuation of such. No other genre gets by with such lauded praise despite continuing flaws and innovative stagnation. It takes less in this genre to impress a good chunk of the gaming media here, and almost every FPS review is rife with double standards and overt leniency, which present in any other genre would be cited as significant detriments.

Aside from PDZ, for a couple other recent examples, see Quake 4 and Call of Duty 2, both PC version reviews. I'm not a fan of this genre and I despise how it's treated in our press, and I'll voice my opinion about it any chance I get.
dude, i hate to break it to you, but all genre's have all been stagnant for quite some time now. there are no big innovations going on.

the only thing i know that's coming that holds a lot of promise for innovation and change would be the revolution and their controller. and who knows if all that is even going to turn out good yet (probably will due to it being Nintendo, although on a personal level I never cared for them).

so i don't really follow your logic here.

I certainly think it could be a system seller to the casuals. You know, the same millions of gamers who don't even have a PC, let alone a gaming PC? they will see this game and probably be completely blown away (because they haven't seen the amazing looking PC FPS's); so to them, I imagine this stuff looks mind blowing. Not to mention they aren't nearly as nit picky as GAF can be.

I think sometimes us GAF gamers don't recognize that we are an extremely small segment of the gaming population, who play games on both consoles and PC's.

I know it's anecdotal, but tonight, while in line at Wal-Mart, none of the gamers there that were all talking to each other had PC's... I was aksing because we were talking about COD2 (of which I had already played on the PC) and none of them even knew anything about PC gaming... but they were all extremely excited for COD2 and PD0 because they wanted some FPS action.

I want to see like a 60 minutes style investigative report on wtf happened to the key players at Rare because it sure as hell doesn't seem they're popping out hits like in the N64 days.

They all left and made their own companies or joined other ones.

Only in a Rare thread could a post like this happen about a game that just was rated "superb" by one of the toughest critics in the industry.

pretty please?

The aiming does feel off,I tried sniping in Multiplayer and couldn't hit shit,I'm just so used to Halo and it really is a huge difference between the games.

Hey I haven't been able to play on Live yet,is it a matchmaking system like Halo or what?

this is my BIG question.. is there a matchmaking system? or do you just join games that are already "running"? (that sucks)

Derail it with what? High quality games?

Did I ever say these weren't high quality games? I'm pointing out reviews that deliberately ignore things that would cripple lesser games for the sake of telling people to buy them.

Don't kid yourself.
Gamespot can afford to put their "journalistic integrity" away and give games like MGS3 (8.7) a lower score because the install base is already there.

Here is the flagship title for the newest console and it has scored anywhere from 7 and up in dozens of reviews.

Why would Gamespot rate the game higher than even TeamXbox?

Simple, they depend on new subscribers and Microsoft has nurtured their gullible fanbase into something far worse than the fans of the N64 at their prime.

How many Xbots, old and new will get Gamespot Complete now after having had their purchase validated by this oh so usually harsh review site.

I think you think too much. :lol

I played pd0 in multi and single last night

it was meh :/ The armor you wear in multiplayer matches looks really dumb. It Took alot of tweaking to make the game playable. and yeah, the levels (especially the snow one wtf) were really too big without bots. Cover is useless for the most part even in a game as small as 4 player. Rolling is uh........okay i guess? I'd rather have a jump button to be honest.

The single player was annoying, bad character designs bad accents and fucking escort missions.

lol what good has rare done lately!?!?

Well they made a lot of people suicidial/upset/bitter in this very thread, wich is a good thing IMO. I see plenty of people getting upset when their favorite game gets a low score on some online site, but so many people getting upset because it scored so high is quite hilarious and not something you see very often. So did the score crush your dreams? Possible yes.

Why are people acting as if gamespot is the only site that gave it a positive review.

I'm so in agreement with you right now. Everyone should be happy another great game is now on the market.

This is so true, the game looks pretty good, people need to get over it. Why people have such hatred towards Rare I'll never understand...

RARE SUCKAGE:

Kameo: Elements of Power
Conker: Live and Reloaded
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
Star Fox Adventures

NEED I SAY MORE!?

I think we should be able to voteban Junior members or something.

What does SUCKAGE mean to you? Kameo is averaging an 80% (aka a "B"). It doesn't suck, and depending on the reviewer, it could even be "great."

It's a matter of tastes, I guess. I'm just very happy Rare is back to actually making games.

The Good: Awesome presentation, featuring cutting-edge graphics and sound; delicious assortment of high-powered near-future weapons; excellent cooperative mission mode lets you play split screen or online; lots of multiplayer options, including some clever twists on familiar themes; one of the best original soundtracks this year.

The Bad: Characters can look ugly up close, plus some other minor graphical glitches; some missions are frustrating, especially since you can't save midmission; pretty weak storyline is incidental to all the action.

Taken as a whole, Perfect Dark Zero is decidedly one of the best, fully featured Xbox 360 games so far, and it's a compelling reason to spring for the system if you've been on the fence. While the game doesn't reinvent the first-person shooter, which has been a mainstay of action gaming for more than a decade, it delivers one of the most highly refined and spectacular examples of this brand of gameplay to date. From its ravishing good looks and totally first-rate audio, to the believable feel of its outstanding weapons, to its wealth of single- and multiplayer options, Perfect Dark Zero delivers just about everything you could hope for from a first-person shooter.

HATERS AM CRY

IS IT SO HARD TO HAVE A GAME WITH A GOOD STORY-LINE ON LAUNCH DAY ???? :(.

I know we will be getting Oblivion, but I am sick of playing the "BAM and ALL EXPLODES" type of games where story is the last thing on developers' mind...

My choice for launch games is getting harder as they all fall on this issue... :(.

FPS games get attention cause they're always the bleeding edge of technology. They lead the tech curve with graphics, physics, multiplayer, moddability, etc. That's a lot reason for the attention, but even so it's an established genre that has a broad appeal that far exceeds the popularity of more niche genres, especially in the West. Did you expect the games not to be appeal Western reviewers? People like FPS so much that it's more about gameplay than ever, it's just not immediately apparent until played like any Racing, S.RPG, or JRPG, or any other genre where the differences amount to subtleties. Much more innovation can't be accomplished within the confines of the genre cause it's almost all been done in some form or another. It just may not have ever had or seen as much commercial success as your average console game, it may have been an mod, it may not have been the best implementation, but more crazy shit has been tried with FPS than any other genre. At it's core it's still a First Person Shooter though so what exactly do you expect as far as innovation? I mean you're making such a stupid generalization largely cause you're ignorant to the intricacies of the games and the differences in how they handle and feel is how I see it. It's a popular genre that you don't like, get over sour grapes!

You act like this game wasn't push back for launch, it's been in development far too long to have such a crappy story.
