Thank you. You demonstrated my distaste for the treatment of the FPS genre perfectly. Whilst I listed gameplay reasons as my primary complaints towards how reviewers view the genre, for your example, you only list aesthetics.Speevy said:Unlike JRPG's, where a developer can use SNES sprites and get a 9? Or no shadows? Yeah.
dude, i hate to break it to you, but all genre's have all been stagnant for quite some time now. there are no big innovations going on.Heian-kyo said:My comment wasn't just directed at PDZ, but rather how I feel Western journalists rate first person shooters in general, with PDZ just being a continuation of such. No other genre gets by with such lauded praise despite continuing flaws and innovative stagnation. It takes less in this genre to impress a good chunk of the gaming media here, and almost every FPS review is rife with double standards and overt leniency, which present in any other genre would be cited as significant detriments.
Aside from PDZ, for a couple other recent examples, see Quake 4 and Call of Duty 2, both PC version reviews. I'm not a fan of this genre and I despise how it's treated in our press, and I'll voice my opinion about it any chance I get.

Raiden said:So is every option from the PD64 multiplayer in PD0? And is there a soundtrack-list like in PD64? And how is king of the hill in PD0?
Please answer these Questions and you will receive my love.

I think you think too much. :lolhahahax said:Don't kid yourself.
Gamespot can afford to put their "journalistic integrity" away and give games like MGS3 (8.7) a lower score because the install base is already there.
Here is the flagship title for the newest console and it has scored anywhere from 7 and up in dozens of reviews.
Why would Gamespot rate the game higher than even TeamXbox?
Simple, they depend on new subscribers and Microsoft has nurtured their gullible fanbase into something far worse than the fans of the N64 at their prime.
How many Xbots, old and new will get Gamespot Complete now after having had their purchase validated by this oh so usually harsh review site.

Shompola said:Well they made a lot of people suicidial/upset/bitter in this very thread, wich is a good thing IMO. I see plenty of people getting upset when their favorite game gets a low score on some online site, but so many people getting upset because it scored so high is quite hilarious and not something you see very often. So did the score crush your dreams? Possible yes.

Wario64 said:The Good: Awesome presentation, featuring cutting-edge graphics and sound; delicious assortment of high-powered near-future weapons; excellent cooperative mission mode lets you play split screen or online; lots of multiplayer options, including some clever twists on familiar themes; one of the best original soundtracks this year.
The Bad: Characters can look ugly up close, plus some other minor graphical glitches; some missions are frustrating, especially since you can't save midmission; pretty weak storyline is incidental to all the action.
Taken as a whole, Perfect Dark Zero is decidedly one of the best, fully featured Xbox 360 games so far, and it's a compelling reason to spring for the system if you've been on the fence. While the game doesn't reinvent the first-person shooter, which has been a mainstay of action gaming for more than a decade, it delivers one of the most highly refined and spectacular examples of this brand of gameplay to date. From its ravishing good looks and totally first-rate audio, to the believable feel of its outstanding weapons, to its wealth of single- and multiplayer options, Perfect Dark Zero delivers just about everything you could hope for from a first-person shooter.
