Persona 2: Eternal Punishment |Import OT| "I'll accept my punishment... but not now."

Sins are never truly forgiven. Eventually there must be punishment.

Welcome back to the world where Kegare and Rumors rule: Sumaru City.

This is the domicile of the Crawling Chaos. Tread lightly.

baofu.png

All did not end well at the end of Innocent Sin.

For there to be peace, a great cost was levied... and in a last effort to gain back what was lost, memories were erased, and all began anew.

Yet... someone would not forget. And so, a paradox threatens to tear a fragile peace apart.

Soon, once more, rumors will be the force that divides Sumaru City between steady order and absolute chaos.

Much like its predecessor, Eternal Punishment takes place in overhead, isometric dungeons with turn-based battles.

ep6.jpg

In the tradition of the earlier Persona and SMT titles, demons can either be outright destroyed...

persona2ep-4.png

Or even reasoned with, for spell cards to make your Persona all they can be.

Those feeling confident due to Innocent Sin's relative ease should bear in mind that EP is far, far more challenging... but also more rewarding.

The PSP remake of Eternal Punishment includes a few choice updates:

*Original or remixed OST, much like Innocent Sin.
Comparison: Map 1 (PS1) VS Map 1 [PSP]

Note the rad guitar added to the remix.

*A new scenario bridging Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, focusing on Tatsuya.
ep7.jpg

You can find a synopsis here, (SPOILERS!)

*Variable color interface, ranging from grey, red, blue, and my personal favorite, purple.

ep4.jpg

*New fusion overlays, with potential five(!) character team ups.

Sadly, with the recent announcement for a localization of Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers(a fantastic game in its own right), this leaves the prospects for a localization of EP slim to non-existent, as EP was released first in Japan.

That said, EP was released in the US on the PS1, and there are ample guides out there to help you through it if you decide to import the PSP version, or simply replay the classic PS1 edition.

Whatever your preference, do try and show my favorite game in the series some love.

This may be our last chance.

See you on the dark side.

And try to positive thinking.

Well, since its pretty much been shown that the PSP version won't be coming over I might as well finally play my PS1 version (which I bought about a week before the psp version of IS was announced in japan, go figure).

How clunky will EP feel coming from the PSP version of IS? I know EP on PS1 is supposed to be a lot harder (not an issue).

All references to Persona 1 will be use the dated localisation, abbreviations everywhere, and you wont be able to import your IS save for a powered up Tatsuya.

Oh Iwakura, you're so cruel to be setting up an OT for a game that will never come over to the west.

Best Persona and maybe SMT cast though. Respect.

Haha, crap. I only played the psp version of P1. I'll have to look at their PS1 names.

I've beaten the PSX version three times, and I can say the PSP version has a lot less(re: zero) spell slowdown, and slightly faster movement.

Also, the dialogue in the PSX version tends to c r a w l.

That said, it still has a fantastic localization, so you should be just fine.

What I need to know is this: when/how do you get the added scenario?

Goddamnit, thanks. Probably never going to play this in Europe... If it did ever get localized, it'd come here in 2014. As if somebody would release a psp game in Europe in 2014.

Well... if it came to the U.S. you could have at least imported it (yay region free) but it still sucks.

The best you can do now is import a U.S. PS1 version and then emulate it :\

...that or learn Japanese. :D

buts buts buts we're getting soul hackers, so maybe there's still an outside chance for a PSN release on this one?

either way, awesome OP cj

But,but,butthurt us...
Great ot, but i for one would have preferred to forget the swap in the face fans got due to the absence of this localization....

That's not fair. You can't expect companies to put out products in dead markets. Disappointing you is one thing; a slap in the face is another.

But I do hope a miracle happens for the people that want this. I haven't played any of P2, but the OP makes it look like a fine game, indeed.

I dunno, it'd make up for the travesty which was the Arena region lock (And subsequent lack of release in EU).

Honestly, it´s a travesty, it´s a continuation of a game you have released, show some compromise and don't abandon your fans.

I'm getting quite angry at this attitude from companies. If you don't have a global plan for something composed of various parts, don't bother. It´s frustrating.

I'm getting tired of people being somewhat unreasonable and sidelining logic in situations like this. But you're upset and I do understand why.

There are publishers who can take hits financially in exchange for good will.

Atlus is not one of them.

Truth.

There are also publishers who can kick their core-audience in the balls and get away with it based on the mainstream appeal of their products.

Atlus is not one of them. :p

It's not "unreasonable", it's quite simple.

Don't "test the waters" with multipart series. That's all. Don't release entries of multipart series if you are not 100% sure that you are going to release the whole package. It's amateurish, it´s frustrating for your fans, IT MAKES YOU LOOK BAD, and suddenly you have a lot of "unreasonable" customers shouting at you, for good reason.

Aeana, you are on point, I actually read it, I respect what they do and I'm grateful of having played games I wouldn't have played without them. But a fuck up is a fuck up.

Sure! And it's great that people hold them to a certain standard and do so firmly. At a certain point though, you have to understand the reality of the situation. Not whether you like it or not, just that it is.

And just to be clear: I don't mean to imply that an EP localization would break the company or anything. I know their future wouldn't be on the line.

I can't imagine Soul Hackers selling very well either, but they localised that. :/

And that will have cost a lot more because of the voice acting.

That's on 3DS; this is PSP. Their bottom line probably goes up on that factor alone. SH could probably tank on 3DS and still sell better than EP.

I guess...

They can't be expecting much though. What, 50k, tops? And I'd be surprised if it even made that.

I kinda wonder if Persona 4 Golden will do anything good for Atlus US (it's obvious that it sold well in Japan though).

I think it'll sell a ton better than P4G.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that I think it will be their biggest seller since Catherine.

Guys, I think we should stop derailing the thread, cj_iwakura has done a fine work with the OP, let's profit this thread to talk about the game (or listen to the ones who can/have played it already). We can open another thread to talk about sales and publishers strategies anytime.

Oh, so basically let the thread fall to page 400 and die? Yes, I agree completely. :)

If only we ever got confirmation... :( It's time to let it go.

I guess I'll try to import a Ps1 copy and play that, if I really like it I'll replay the PSP version in Japanese.

Reading that hurt more than I expected. Ps3 import version it is then.
That needs some discussion though, I'll make a thread about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the biggest seller on Vita. That version of COD doesn't really have legs.

That version of COD doesn't have anything going for it, period. P4G's word-of-mouth is immensely positive. It helps that Vita owners can't be too picky, either. (As much as I wish that weren't the case.)

I don't know why everyone still gets so upset by this. The writing on the wall has been there for ages and its not Atlus's fault that the PSP died years ago.

All I ask from Atlus is that they release the PSX version on PSN, though I (sadly) understand that voice acting licensing probably gets in the way of that.

Because I have no way of playing it unless they release this version.

You had no way to play it before they made the game either. Nothings changed for you. You're never going to be able to play ever game you want to, its just a fact of life.

I expect a lot out of companies in regards to their localizations. But I don't expect them to commit financial suicide.

Right, and that's why it's disappointing.

How it affects the company doesn't interest me.

And to suggest that it would be financial suicide is madness. The region lock hurt Atlus financially more than EP ever could.

sad that I won't play it on PSP but still this great JRPG deserves a thread.
I'd prefer to see a P2 thread tho, not just EP. spread the word to the people that think P4 is the best persona game.

I think the region-locking thing really gets overplayed for why Persona 4 Arena didn't do very well. Still a shitty thing but I think Persona 4 arena's sales were going to be poor regardless.

I'm more worried that Index has learned the wrong lesson from the region locking debacle (that its not worth the effort to give simultaneous launches (or, well, within a month or two).

I think it's safe to say that Arena sold a lot worse than they expected though. At the very least, we know that they were anticipating it being their biggest release of the year.

you gotta agree that whilst atlus smt games are niche, the niche is REALLY faithful...

There's several companies smaller than Atlus still localizing PSP games in 2013. That Atlus doesn't want to or can't afford to localize a mainline Persona game is more than a little baffling.

XSEED being a perfect example. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows comes out early next year, and I guarantee that has a massively smaller fanbase than Persona 2.

On the other hand(and boy does this make me sad), Corpse Party was a surprising critical and financial success, while Innocent Sin did poorly in both regards.
