Persona 5 Review Thread

Metacritic score of 94 is actually higher then I expected. I knew Persona 5 would review extremely well, but I expected more dissonant reviews. Very happy to see this.

Yup, same here. I love Persona (well, I love P4, and really like 3 and 2), but it's a 100 hour game about Japanese high school kids with turn-based battles and often overwrought takes on pop Psychology. It's really threading a needle to get such universal acclaim w/ all the potential pitfalls! Real credit due to the creative team...

What average score were you expecting?

91-92ish. So not significantly different, but I figured it'd be lower.

Did Metacritic just confirm it will hold onto 94 once it publicly hits 43 reviews, or is this just a typo?

I dunno. I actually wasn't looking at that at all. Just commenting on the current score. XD

Will it be hard for someone who has literally never played Persona and knows nothing about it to jump into 5?

This is literally the best possible place to jump in at.

Man, I bought Persona 3 on Vita (I already played P4G, love it) to get me into the spirit but I'm really not feeling it. Just the beginning doesn't feel as good as Persona 4 and I don't like the fact that my character is not modeled like in the sequel.

3 goes for a way different thing in tone than 4 did. I think if you're not feeling the beginning hours of 3, you might not really like the rest of the game.

5 gonna be hype regardless tho

Played the game for four hours today. Felt like 30 mins. The start is a lot quicker than P4 for sure.

so happy to hear this - just picked it up in nyc. gonna play tonight for 1-2 hrs when wife goes to bed.

so stoked!

I've actually taken a break from gaming for the past month or so because the 52 game challenge burned me out a bit and I've been bored with my game options. THIS is the game that renewed my gaming interest. so unique and exciting. so different than all the recent stuff

Yeah did Atlus ever release a version of P3 where you had control of all the characters, the models of the console version, and FeMC and all that stuff?

That would go a long way in helping me like P3 more. I liked it but there's no version of the game that doesn't do something super annoying for me.

People started a GOTY talk naturally as part of the thread, then we gave our opinions on it. It's not embarrassing, it became slightly off topic but the actual conversation was fine.

No need to be offended so by other people's opinions.

Ok... we derailed for a bit with the GOTY talk, but it's done with now and I apologise for my part. Let's move away from this now so we don't get the thread locked.

Agreed.

I can't wait for this game. This would be my first OST for a game I purchase.

Between NieR, Persona, and Zelda, 2017 has been a great year for gaming. What a time to be alive.

Yakuza 0, too. Both that and Persona being the first games in their respective franchises, and both feel like some kind of hidden secret I've stumbled upon.

I've got western AAA fatigue right now, this year has been a great remedy so far!

It's in my top 10 favourite games of all time, and I haven't even reached the conclusion.

Are they giving out any free dlc/costumes besides the Japanese voice track?

Challenge Difficulty (4/4)
Regular Clothes & School Uniforms (4/11)
Phantom Thieves Logo Morgana Car Sticker (4/18)
20th Anniversary Logo Morgana Car Sticker (4/18)
Swimsuit Costumes (4/25)
Maid & Butler Costumes (6/6)
Christmas Costumes (7/11)

THIS CANNOT CONTINUE

Oh but it can, Danganronpa V3, FFXII HD, Sonic Mania, Yakuza Kiwami (Yakuza 1 Remake), Shenmue 3, Super Mario Odyssey and Fire Emblem Echoes (and the Dark Souls 3 DLC that just came out) and goodness knows what else yet to come. One of the best years for Japanese games ever.

Taxman and his gang aren't Japanese though, lol.

Seriously, between several 2017 titles I've already bought and not touched (Yakuza 0, for example) and the New 3DS XL I just bought (first time owning the console), they could just stop making video games altogether and I'd still be busy for the next decade!

But actually, keep making them
.

I think I might bump Persona 5 up to the front of the list. Looks so great, and since I was so late to play Persona 4, I think it would be fun to participate in the launch craze. I'd hate to have something ruined for me inadvertently.

I've been on media blackout since the second trailer I believe (I know that the people on the box art are the party members), this is the first thread I've opened and I only wanted to know the metacritic score.

I'm very pleased. Persona 3/4 are among my favorite games ever
Persona 1 is fine as a historical piece, Persona 2's are very good story/character but the gameplay is too damn grindy and honestly just not fun
so I'm sure I'll be pleased with this one.

edit: I still remember beating P3 and ordering P4 off of Amazon, one of my first orders with Prime. I looked at the box art and thought to myself "I can't love these characters like I loved the cast of P3, and that's okay". I was so very wrong. Hoping I'll be proven wrong yet again.

What's the best non-character specific PS4 theme on the DLC list? Also what's a car sticker?

I think the Anniversary theme is the best but it's only available in japan (Anniversary collector's edition) I believe.

Edit: I would so love a Persona 5 Dynamic Theme with the cast in the main screen and transitions to the MC/other characters when it screen moves up or down.

All the themes on that list are characters specific. In Japan, all the non-character themes were preorder/LE exclusive, so I guess they're not coming to the west.
The car stickers are decals for the one you use in Mementos.

I love EZ allies but I hate how long their reviews take. By the time their Nier Automata review dropped I had already Platinumed the game lol.

Don't forget Ni No Kuni 2 -- and, at least in Japan, likely DQ 11.

There was a theme on the JP store that was either included with the digital game or digital preorder that I have been unable to snag, hopefully it is available for purchase separately in the west.

Now, I need to know one thing from those who are following this game very closely/already beat it : is the tone more like Persona 3 (aka, deep, dark, sinister and depressive), or Persona 4 (aka, weaboo shit, idolmaster-y and everyone is happy) ?

I'm trolling ofc, I like Persona 4 too but I never quite enjoyed it as much as Persona 3 due to the overall tone of the game
