Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth |OT| -- No Dating, Just Dungeons

Mapping is boring, just like Animal Crossing is boring. It's not the funnest thing in the world, but you get a sense of accomplishment from it. That makes it worth doing, regardless of if it's the funnest thing in the world.

I really love this stuff in P3 and P4 so I was glad it see it carry over to PQ.

I'm only on the second floor of the first dungeon but I'm pretty surprised at how much story and voice acting there's been. I expected a barebones Etrian Odyssey reskin. This is pretty close to actual Persona story content. Lots of fun.

One of the things I'm most impressed by is how good of a job they did making it feel like both an EO and Persona game. It's obviously very EO, but there's enough tweaks to the formula to make it not just feel like a Persona skin for an established franchise.

Automap? Thank god in heaven, sorry EO fans, I can't stand that drawing stuff, CAN'T STAND IT.

Maps can be as crazy as Strange Journey as long I don't have to draw anything.

You say that, but the maps in Strange Journey would be so much easier with manual mapping.

I'm curious to see how everyone against cartography would react to Etrian 3, though. Some of its dungeons jam your map radar, forcing you to go manual so you don't get lost, since it disables auto-mapping, too. Likewise, said jammed rooms are often rife with FOEs, and their locations don't show up, either.

I loved those maps in EO3, I have amazing memories from them.

And Yes, SJ would have been easier with manual mapping.

Mapping is new for me, but it's not too bad so far and pretty straight forward. I will say it means you aren't always just pressing forward towards the next objective, so it feels like both a distraction and a benefit to better plan out your movement.

Liking it so far, and the dungeon layout is a big blessing coming from P3/4. Definitely looking forward to a variety of dungeon maps.

Question to those who pre ordered the LE when it was $49.99:

Did they ever cancel your order and give you the $30 GC? IIRC they were supposed to cancel the order and then you could re order the LE (with the $30 GC) for $49.99. Now...I got shipped a copy of the standard edition. I thought it was cancelled and was going to wait for a price drop on PQ. I checked my card and it never got charged for PQ. Yet I got the package delivered today.

I checked my BB order page and it says "Order Completed" and "Payment Validated"

The fact that Z&R can't use personas is a bit dumb. I know the reasons Margaret show, but still... I don't think the story background on this game is as important as the main series.

I've never played an Etrian Odyssey game before, does manual mapping become more of a necessity later on? I just set it to auto because i was spending too much time staring at the bottom screen.

There is got to be a way to
reduce the playcoin amount for unlocking the 100% chests

Doesn't the amount reduce in proportion to the amount of the map you've completed? I had a chest cost more than 200 at one point and it reduced to around 10 when I had ~95% complete

When you're revisiting areas to get back down, it also helps to know where the shortcuts and stuff like the power spots are.

Just reached third floor and it's 4am, love this game.

Still feels a bit easy on hard though aside from the very beginning. Free SP every battle feels broken. What does the risky difficulty actually do to you? Does it actually delete your saves or just makes it more annoying?

This was the last thing I expected myself to comment on before launching the game but 30 minutes in, I am in love with the art style. I like what they did, it really fits the theme of the game.

Gives all the fucks
Even if you use automap you still have to map stuff like doors, gathering spots, some walls, shortcuts, write down notes, and stairs.

You could ignore all of that but I don't leave a floor without mapping everything perfectly.
I'm fine with this because it feels like I'm taking down quick notes of "Hey, there's something here, remember that in case you gotta go back" which only takes a second.

While I understand the satisfaction of drawing your own map to some, as someone who isn't an artist and kind of has limited time for gaming, I don't feel like having to stop every few seconds to draw a line when I just want to explore & fight.

My copy just shipped! Hopefully should arrive before the official ANZ launch too.
Why didn't I think of this!? Found an eBay seller in Australia who gives a shipping estimate of Friday with express post, so I went ahead and ordered a copy. Would be really great if I could actually get it this Friday to dedicate some time to this weekend.

I ordered from the UK. Not only should it arrive a few days early, it's $20 cheaper!

Yup, pretty much what I'm doing.

Went risky with the P3 protag.

Only on the second floor but so far so good. I'm going very slowly, waiting for difficulty to spike. The enemy gets the advantage a pretty absurd amount of the time and they can easily kill purple if they focus fire but they rarely do. Scarcity of SP and more item value are my biggest hurdles.

The ui is clean and pleasant to look at. Dungeons look great so far. Chibi characters don't even look too bad.

Just waiting for the other shoe to drop and risky to start kicking my ass.

Fuck it, I'm downloading it.

Probably gonna go with the P3 Protagonist.

Now, debating Hard or Risky...

EDIT: probably Risky. I'm a masochist.

I feel 3rd floor is when the training gloves come off. The beetles especially...

hmm, so I actually staid true to my word and ordered both the US and EU versions.
I'm a lowly little prostitute that would suck up all the faeces gathered in Golgotha to get my hand on all the Persona Merch...sue me.

But I noticed a peculiar thing.

The PEGI and ESRB ratings are totally off.
Pegi has it 12 years old whereas ESRB says 17...did the Germans do anything again? Or was it the Australians this time? :(

love all the little improvements they did to etrian's mapping feature. especiall being able to see walls you are close to on the map.

Thank you Atlus for making my GotY choice this year easy. So good.

I love how it combines Etrian Odyssey gameplay + Persona gameplay to make something that's arguably better than either series to date. Been playing it on Risky mode (P4 protag) and it's been a nice challenge; came close to dying a couple times but so far I've managed to avoid it (glad I got a sub-persona early on with Endure on it) with the only Game Over to date being when I tried to fight a FOE to see how tough it was.

The Japanese rating is 12 as well (Cero B). Not sure why ESRB is so different than every other region on this game.

Did they add swearing in the English version again? Maybe that's why? But I don't really know.

From the ESRB description..

During the course of the game, several female monsters are depicted with exposed breasts, while other creatures have phallic-shaped heads and torsos. Various Personas (e.g., Succubus, Incubus) have sexual characteristics that are described in text (e.g., “They visit sleeping men/women and have sexual intercourse with them”). The words “sh*t” and “d*ck” are heard in the dialogue.

...Yeah, that sounds like an M rating for us.

ESRB: M rating

Content Descriptors: Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Violence

Rating Summary: This is a role-playing game, based on the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona franchise, in which players assume the role of students investigating a mysterious labyrinth at a school. As players explore themed dungeons, they engage in turn-based combat against fantastical creatures (e.g., demons, shadow creatures, evil spirits). Players use blades, crossbows, firearms and Personas (i.e., creatures that enable magical attacks) to defeat enemies; impact sounds and colorful light effects are frequently depicted. Some environments depict large bloodstains on floors/walls; one boss fight depicts blood-splatter effects as players are hit. Well it's English only in EU as well. NIS(E) just did the legwork of getting it out here. Would surprise me if they "censored" anything. Look at the other games they are localising. It must be very very risqué before they censor/remove anything.

Ohh then that may be it. It's usually violence and blood that gets us here oh and forced sexual thingies(SP)But then again Europe has seen a rise in puritans as of late. Let's hope they stay out of the games :)

Shopto still hasn't posted my copy. Getting concerned I won't get it tomorrow. :(

RiceDigital just posted my "normal" order...always go with whatever else than ShopTo :|

I was merely thinking that maybe the Americans were more sensitive to that kind of stuff. Vanilla Persona 4 was 12+ in Japan (don't know about Europe) too while the American release was 17+ and I don't really remember any particularly offensive Personas, but I do know the dialogue has plenty of swear words added in.

Has anyone got the PQ art book yet? I haven't picked it up. Might get it after Christmas. I hear there's not much Soejima though, which is a shame.

I'm not sure on what happened with P4 (or P3 for that matter), but the final English version was pretty dark/mature all around, so I think I'm in agreement with the rating. Whether Atlus made some unnecessary changes to the language that affected that, I have no idea (seems likely from what you guys are saying), but at least Mara would have attributed to a higher ESRB. Japan has a far higher tolerance for sexual elements in their media, I mean a good chunk of those ecchi anime that are basically softcore porn are 12+ (no offense to anyone). Persona definitely doesn't even get up to that level.

I recall something about the P3 ESRB being heavily influenced by the Evokers, though, but perhaps I am misremembering.

Well the version Square Enix localised was 16+(have it in front of me). The US version of 4G was 17+ whereas the EU version is 16...first time the discrepancy been this much.

Wait! The one in the LE or is a stand alone one coming?

The stand alone one. It's been out for a while now.

Be aware that it's in Japanese.

Ehhh I don't really know about that... I mean Persona 4 Golden had a bit more fanservice and the rating got bumped to 15+ (or whatever C is) in Japan compared to vanilla.
Mara is in Persona Q as well, so why would the rating be 12 in EU and 17 in US compared to Persona 4 vanilla? Swear words in text every one will see and even a kid would get compared to phallic shaped random Personas you may or may not see seems like a bigger reason to me, but what do I know. It's true America is more anti-sexual stuff.

I played through all Persona games since P3 but never Etrian Odyssey, what difficulty level should I choose ?
Risky of course.

Always enjoyed the EO games, but Persona Q takes it to the next level with adding Persona to it. Makes me so much more interested in the world. Also enjoying some of the mapping streamlining they did and having it paint out an outline of the walls in your view (not automap, but just kind of showing where you can draw). I'll never turn on automap because mapping reminds me of being a kid and mapping out things on graph paper.
